I am looking for some advice from any columbus NICU nurses....I am a traveler who wants to travel to Columbus before taking a staff position there I NEVER see travel positions posted for NICU in Columbus. Does anyone know if their hospital takes travelers in the NICU and if so through which company. Thanks!!

I am a traveler in DC (originally from Ohio) and my Husband is looking to come to OSU for law school. I wanted to take a travel position in Ohio to check out the hospitals before taking a staff position but (I am a nicu nurse) I can't find any travel positions for NICU in columbus...(cleveland and cinci yes but not columbus) Anyone know if OSU, Childrens, or riverside take nicu travelers and if so through which companies? Also, any inside info on Columbus nicu's? good/bad/otherwise.... Thanks!! Elizabeth

I work/live on the gulf coast and we missed Charlie last year but only because of its quick turn at the end into Punta Gorda. We were activated (we work and A team B team schedule for disasters) and I slept at the hospital and everything (for the most part) worked out. We were all happy we dodged a big one. THEN we realized the hospital took the WRONG message from the near miss!! Now they think they are immune to the dangers these storms pose. They have since then refused to activate the emergency plan (how many hurricanes later I can't remember???) and we are told to get to work even if the roads are being reported as unsafe. If we have to come in significantly early to feel safe that is our responsibility (no extra pay!! :angryfire). I just feel I am a nurse not a first responder and the hospital should activate me with enough time to get to work safely. They show how much they DON'T respect me or my role in the unit by not being concered with my personal safety. I am no good to them dead!

I have been a nurse for 1.5 years and I started right in the NICU. This is my second Bachelors degree and I went to nursing school knowing I wanted NICU and only NICU. I just had to look around (not very hard) to find a hospital that took new grads. I had a twelve week orientation with a preceptor and classes..... I would not think that your work on a med surg floor would give you much more than some additional orginizational skills before coming to the NICU. I STILL would die if they tried to float me to a med surg floor...I don't think my skills would translate even to an infant floor well...I have been floated to our Peds Cardio ICU and I was fine (kinda crazy I know). Guess I am used to vented babies not ones that cry for their mom Good luck and don't sell yourself short if NICU is what you want! Elizabeth

I had always heard the liver placement reasoning as well. I have been a NICU nurse now for 1.5 years and noone at my unit will believe me that the axilla is not the best place to put the probe. Is there research or anything in writing to proove I am not insane!!! Thanks
