UNF Summer 2016
Hey guys!!! I applied (and went through your feelings) two years ago!! Don't feel disadvantaged, because you are not!! You are doing ALL of the right things! You went to the workshops! You nailed that spot for an interview and you guys are ranked based on Interview, TEAS, GPA THEN on which program you want to get into. You may nail that interview better than those with previous degrees and rank higher on the list than them - guaranteeing you a spot. The only difference is that the top 36 people eligible for APL are offered APL vs. RPL. That's all! There is a list with 1 - 72 on it. 36 of those people who are eligible for APL will be offered APL depending on where they are on the list. The rest will be offered RPL. Your goal is to make it on that list (or waitlist). Don't be nervous!!! You've got this!! Also - if you have any questions at all email the students! They are so so helpful and will totally allay all of your fears.

HELP! So many roads, not sure which to take
Hi there! You have much more work experience than I do (I graduate a BSN program in April), but I have a pretty good chance of being hired in the OR where I was an extern over the summer when I graduate. I am so excited about that...but I am doing my senior preceptorship in post-partum/nursery and I am so excited about that, too, especially as a lactation counselor hoping to become a lactation consultant. I have no idea which way to go but have settled on doing one full-time and the other PRN. I don't even know if that is possible, especially as a brand new nurse -- but I know I love both and I would love the experience in both with the opportunity to cross-train to L&D later. Many of the hospitals in my area are LDRPs, so the OR experience will be helpful as well as the post-partum/nursery experience. I just wanted to let you know that I understand the struggle. The OR is a fascinating place with invaluable specialty experience that no one can take away from you. With those hours, and it only being 6 minutes from my home at a beautiful facility - I know I can't turn it down...but I don't want to give up my other love either. I plan on taking a PRN Lactation or post-partum position to keep my toes in the door and get some gentle experience while I hone my OR experience. I certainly hope that is a thing. Like...I really hope it's a thing. lol I hope you can do something similar and let me know it works!! One of the nurses in clinical yesterday told me she was management at another hospital, but tele was her passion so she does this PRN. I thought that was so cool. Best of both worlds!

UNF BSN FALL 2016 !
So happy you enjoyed it!!! I wish I could have been there yesterday but I had clinical. Good to hear it was just as inviting as the past workshops. We love our school and each other and our faculty. I'm happy that came across genuinely, yesterday. Your TEAS scores need to be in by the deadline. If you are applying for Fall, 2016 - that would be May 1st. The Student Nurses' Association provides TEAS Study materials free of charge in our Borrow Library. The application for that is online UNF Student Nurses' Association > PreNursing > Teas Borrow Library. We just ask that you have already applied to the school and are registered on the ATI TEAS website before you ask to borrow it - that way we can track our books :) Best of luck!!! You can do it!

UNF Reg BSN Program Question
Hey there! I am in UNF's program now. It is absolutely full-time and your job must come second to school. I am in the 2 year traditional track. I have worked part-time the entire time and have found it manageable. There have been times when I had to take a couple of days off of work to make the schedule work with school but so far so good and I graduate in a few months. I hope that helps :). (p.s. I also have a 3 year old)

I want to quit nursing.
Going to offer a different opinion instead of attacking your age which none of us know. I would submit to you that life is short. I would also tell you never to listen to anyone telling you to deal with being miserable because, "dammit, we're all miserable and misery is part of nursing so deal with being miserable". That's ridiculous. This is your life. You get to say what is and is not acceptable and that does not make you insufferable, that makes you aware of your needs, wants and happiness. If your family life and time with your family is one of your core values - then honor that core value. No one needs experience to realize they are unhappy. You recognizing your unhappiness now is a blessing. Now, what I would say to you is that nursing is one of the very few professions that affords you an endless amount of possibilities - many of which are not at the bedside and have normal working hours that would align with your husband's. My suggestion would be to find out what else you may be able to do. Do not let anyone else define your happiness. You know what happiness means to you. Life is far too short to stick it out if you are miserable. I would never suggest to anyone I cared about that they stay in a situation that brought them pain; especially work. No ma'am. Best of luck.

Starting nursing school with a 3 year old
My child was the reason I started nursing school. When I started pre-reqs he was 10 months old. I graduate in 3 months and he will be turning 4 two months after I graduate. Best feeling in the world! The time will pass anyway. I say do it now while your little is not doing extracurricular activities that you don't want to miss!

Graduate Nurse Residency Programs
I saw that! so far I have found Memorial, Baptist, Mayo, Shands (UF Health) nurse residencies. I don't see anything for St. Vincent's. I guess they haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet! (In Jacksonville, I mean!)

UNF BSN FALL 2016 !
Hi! I highly recommend you do our So You Wanna Be A Nurse workshop (free) offered through the school! It gives you so much information about the requirements. I believe that you will be OK to apply, but you need to make sure your core science classes are finished before you apply. I can't remember which ones. The average GPA is usually between a 3.6 - 3.8 depending on the cohort. Cummulative GPA isn't that big of a deal, except that you have the minimum. The Prereq GPA, TEAS score and Interview are what gets you into this school - so work on those. The application can be downloaded online for free. Won't cost you a thing. I also recommend you request an e-Packet from the Student Nurses' Association who has a lot of awesome materials for those attempting to get into UNF School of Nursing. Best of luck!!!

Graduate Nurse Residency Programs
Awesome! Congrats, Mark. I'm in UNF's BSN program now. I don't graduate until late April 2016 so most likely will be looking at residency programs that start late spring / summer. I didn't realize Memorial had a residency program! Their CVICU is seriously amazing. Definitely keep us updated on the program. Congrats on getting into it!! I do know about Baptist and Mayo's programs. But I'm not too clear on when you have to be licensed. Good to see everyone here looking into it, too! Mark, let me know if you need any help with the BSN courses!! I'd be happy to share notes with you.

attn working mamas.
My hubby and I switched off who was home with baby for the first 2 years of his life. Once he turned 2, off to daycare he went. He got RSV twice in the 10 months he has been there so far. But you know what? He LOVES it!!! Sure, I have mommy guilt...but there are days I go pick up my little dude and he doesn't want to leave. Actually - that's most days. He loves it. It gets better as they get older. I'm in school right now and I work 19.5 hours a week on top of that. My husband works full time. There was no way I could leave him when he was so very small...and I had huge anxiety when it was time to leave him at 2...but he made me so proud. He marched right up to that daycare, threw open the door - and never looked back. Well, he looked back with a smile when he said "bye bye mommy!". They are pretty resilient :) The key is finding a place you really love. My son is at a green daycare where they teach him to garden and they eat very clean and organic. We aren't huge on that at home, but I love that they are huge on that at school. Nothing is toxic and the school is relatively small and personable. Every teacher knows him, and all of the kids know each other and we go to each other's birthday parties. You have to make daycare more than just "daycare". Make them a part of your life because they are a major part of your child's life right now. I text and call our director all the time just to chit chat about new products and cool play spots and things for the kids. That is very important to me. There are cameras so I can check in on my little guy. He is ALWAYS having a ball. ALWAYS! The director of my daycare when I was little became one of my god parents. She died recently and most of the children who were in her care when we were little were at her funeral. She gifted me the high chair we used when I had my own child. She was a huge part of my life and I couldn't imagine my life without her. That was due, in large part, to the work of my mom and dad who made her a huge part of our lives. She was never "a paid-stranger". She was Miss Faye, my caregiver, "auntie", and God-mother. And she wasn't an in-home center, or a nanny. It was a small center. She was at my wedding. It doesn't have to be stranger-danger all of the time. Life is what you make of it It was not nearly the evil I expected it to be.

UNF Fall 2014 Hopefuls
Hi! I didn't want to leave you hanging. I saw your post but we are SO busy in the program that I really don't have a lot of time to come back on here and browse how everyone is doing. CONGRATULATIONS on the interview!! I remember that time so so well -- especially since it was only, like, 3 months ago!! :) I can tell you that they go out of their way to keep you calm and relaxed. You will come into a room with a couple of interviewers and between 4 - 5 of your potential candidates. You will be asked a few questions surrounding your decision to become a nurse and your fit for the program, basically. I wish I could tell you what they are looking for, but even after you get in - they don't tell you!! You will meet some of the current students first and they will be available to answer any questions you might have. I can tell you that it has been a general consensus that you do NOT want to always be first, and you do NOT want to always be last to answer a question. You definitely don't want to overbear the interview and talk over your fellow candidate. Respect and courtesy while others are talking are highly valued in this program, and the professors are visibly annoyed when they do not happen (as they should be). It is so important that you can work together with your fellow candidates. You will all need each other to succeed once you are in the program. At the end of the day, just be yourself. And do not be too discouraged if you find yourself on the waitlist. There are a great many of us from the waitlist and we are all super bright and equally as matched. You will love it here. It is hard work, but the atmosphere is awesome.
