Hello all, It's been a long while since I have come back to this website because I have been busy with nursing school. I have (God willing!) 4 more classes left, so I have been beginning to think about what I want to be when I grow up. I'm positive I want to be a psych nurse. I have a bachelors of science in psychology, and I have worked as a medical assistant with people who have mental illness and my job right before I started nursing school was at a behavioral health center. I also did my clinical for my mental health rotation at one of the top 5 psych hospitals in the country, I learned a lot there as well. I had no idea this is what I wanted to stick to going into nursing school. As a medical assistant I worked in a few different areas of medicine but nothing made me love a specialty as much as mental health. With that being said, I have worked in a few different places over the years and of course I have my clinical experiences. I would like to know if there is anyone that could put into words the best way to round out my resume for when I graduate to show that this is my thing, this is what I love to do and what I have even though it may be minimal right now, experience in doing. Or if anyone could direct me to a site that can help me out. How would I word things, and for hiring managers should I put emphasis on just my psych experience or all of it? What are people looking for on a resume for a psych nurse? Any help would be great. Thank you in advance.

Well I've looked into it long before I applied, I know Devry "owns" them but I do not attend Devry. I don't know what would be so impossible to replicate because they do all their clinicals at major hospitals around Houston and in TMC. I wouldn't want to work for someone who is going to look at my school rather than what I am qualified to do. I find that to be very shallow. You as a hiring manager do not know my story, you do not know why I picked my school or why this place works for ME. It may not be your first choice but it was mine and I am happy with it. In addition I also have found that every Chamberlain graduate that I have met so far form Houston, has found a job before he or she has even graduated. And pretty much all of them are in the hospitals in TMC. I researched Chamberlain for over 2 months before I applied and I was happy with the information that I found. From what I have found Devry in Houston does not seem to be on the downslide. Maybe in other states or areas but not here. People falsely assume that because it is a fore profit school you don't get quality education but yet they know nothing at all about the teachers or the school. It would have been nice if I had been able to go to a "traditional" school however I am not a "traditional" student. Like I said a hiring manager who is not going to even consider myself or any other graduate from any other school because it is for profit, why would anyone want to work for someone as close minded as that? As I stated in my previous comment, I called around to the major hospitals in the area, places that I would like to work when I am done with school and each one of them told me they do NOT care where I went to school. All that they care about is that I have my license. Their HR departments and the graduates that I have met so far are the ones who I can base my conclusions off of. Not from people like SoonToBe_TXRN who come trolling around on the Chamberlain part of message boards just to insult a large group of people about a school she obviously knows nothing about. If you go to HBU thats great for you. But why are you here trying to insult us, this whole area of the form when you have nothing at all to do with this school? What was the whole point of coming here? Just to try to make yourself feel better that you are at a private baptist school? Just because SoonToBe_TXRN as an undedicated student doesn't respect my school, doesn't mean all these hospitals my respected school does clinical at doesn't respect us. Because they do, and if you really look into this school they have done some very amazing things. They may cost a little more for some people but you get what you pay for and so far my classmates and I are loving it. I can't wait till I'm done and I can come back and dig up this old thread and prove everyone who has negativity to say about this school wrong.

I had to come back and add this for any other negative person that comes along and says well my grades must not have been good enough or whatever else gets made up about this school, I am not "settling" or "selling myself short", and I don't think anyone who goes to Chamberlain is either. Especially the Houston Campus. I have a medical assistant certification with a 4.0, an associates in health and medical science with a 3.0 and a 3.1 in my sciences and a bachelors in science in psychology with a 3.8. My GPA is well above what Chamberlain accepts and above what many of the schools you listed accept. This school worked for ME. And it continues to work or many other people. And while other people may be sitting around criticizing the school that they know nothing about and continue to take and retake their sciences to raise their GPA, I'm going to be getting into my bachelors. Not only that, by the time TWU would be ready to accept my application I will have already started school and be on my way to getting my BSN. By the time UTHSC accepts another round of applications and thats IF I get accepted and then they start class again, I will have already done a semester if not 2 at Chamberlain. Same goes for UTMB and all the others. I have the grades and I have previous education. I researched in depth every school you mentioned and more and applied to 3. Chamberlain was MY top choice for MANY reasons. Hard work does pay off and it paid off for me to get into Chamberlain.

Thats exactly what I did. I went to HCC too.

Before I applied to Chamberlain I called around to HR departments in local major hospitals in and around Houston. I asked them all if they hired or have hired graduates from Chamberlain. I got nothing but "yes" answers and I quit calling when Hermann Memorial told me we can't tell you if we hire students from Chamberlain because we don't care where you went to school. All we care about is if you passed the Nclex and you can show proof of your license. They told me they don't keep track of who went to what school. After hearing that and gathering all the information that I needed to know about the program I applied and I'm happy with my decision.

I haven't even started school yet and I can tell you your information is very wrong. And in addition to what may work for you, doesn't work for everyone else. It doesn't have to do with desperation to get into nursing school, they offer a different schedule than all the other schools you mentioned. Not only that, but it would cost me more money for me to "get my gpa up" at this point than it would to attended the school that best works for me which is Chamberlain. Devry is Devry is Devry, but I'm not going to Devry. And the Nclex is the Nclex is the Nclex. And uniformed comments are uniformed comments, mostly based off of what you think you "heard" from others who never attended the school to begin with, or even checked them out, obtained no information from any reputable source. Going to Chamberlain isn't "selling yourself short". It's what works for some people. Do your research before insulting so many people and misinforming others.

Well I got into Chamberlain BSN program at the Houston TX campus. I start September 1, 2014. I researched the school for about 4 months before applying and found a whole lot of really good information about them. I'm really impressed with our campus and all it has to offer including clinical sites, and NCLEX scores, even though it's fairly new. I can't wait to start. I realize there aren't many Houston people on here so I just wanted to start a thread and maybe one day when someone else is researching the school they can find me and this thread and I can help them possibly. Chamberlain went from being my last choice to my top choice after everything I found out about them. And I noticed that anyone who has negative things to say about Chamberlain obviously hasn't done their homework. Can't wait to start!

I applied to the Houston campus for the September 1st start but they told me they can't let me know if I'm in or not till after they finish with their May start applicants. I took my HESI and passed, my GPA's are well above requirement and I have a previous degree and as I've stated in a few other threads, some of the admissions process confuses me because of contradicting information I've revived but/so now I'm just hoping to get in... Waiting for the call to see if I'm accepted or not.

I'm 30, I've been married since I was 21. I have 2 girls, age 6 and 19 months. I have a medical assistant certification, an associates from my prerequisites and a bachelors in science in psychology. I am at the point where I am applying to nursing schools now for a 2nd degree, it has always been part of my academic plan. I have applied to a few schools and will be applying to a few more. I have a main one I really want to go to so just waiting to hear back from them. I love anything that has to do with the brain. I've been working with adults and children who have psychiatric and neurological disorders in home health and most recently a clinic. It's can be tough but interesting, and fulfilling at the same time. My goal is to become a nurse and combined my degrees in a way. So fingers crossed and lots of prayers, I'll find out if I get into the program I really want to be in with in a little over a month hopefully.

I have a question for you all, I am applying to the Houston campus and I am so confused. If I apply for the September now, will my application be reviewed now? Or will it have to wait till after May start acceptance has finished? Also if I was accepted for May start and then changed my mind and said I want to start in Septmber, what happens? One person at the Houston campus told me that I would have to write a letter and go through a process and be put back in with the September applicants to be able to switch from May to September. Another at the same campus told me that the admissions committee reviews your application when they get them as they meet. And that if I were accepted into May start and wanted to hold the spot till September, then they'd hold it, no questions asked. I'm so confused and stressing over this and no one seems to be able to give me a good answer.

I guess I'm going to attempt to see if anyone is out there that is now applying to the May or September start? (Houston) For the ones who previously commented in this thread, did y'all get accepted and how do you like it so far? And is there anyone out there that applied and met and or exceeded all the requirements, GPA of 2.75 or higher and a HESI score of at least 75% and did NOT get accepted? I just finished my HESI today and finally turned in all my paperwork for the September start. My advisor said that my application won't be up for review till after May though. She said that they are still reviewing and accepting applicants for the May start and don't start looking at September till after May. I went to an open house and the instructors contradicted this information so I'm really confused about everything unfortunately. I just pray I get in, aside from the administration confusions it seems like a really amazing school to attend.

Thank you. This one is requiring reading, vocab, grammar, math, biology, chem and a&p. I suck at chem . I take my HESI tomorrow. I've been studying for it but I don't feel 100% ready. I get so nervous. I keep saying at least I can take it a 2nd time I guess, although I don't want to. I want to do good on my first try. I've taken the TEAS and made a 73, I was really bummed out about that. And I REALLY, really want to go to Chamberlain, so I'm a little stressed out. Although I'm trying not to stress... Easier said than done.

If you're too old then I'm too old and I refuse to believe that I'm too old. I'm 30 and if all goes well and as planned in the next few months, God willing, I'll be around 32 when I graduate. God had other plans for me when I was 22 and I was unable to go to follow my dreams then, but he's allowing me it do it now. If your heart is in it, go for it! If anyone ever tells you you're too old, they must be too young to understand the reasoning behind continuing your education.

Please don't listen to people who have this "buyer beware" attitude about Chamberlain and have never actually attended the school or fully researched it for themselves. I live in Houston and am applying to Chamberlain also, I've done a ton of research on them, talked to alumni, gone to an open house and again went back to speak with an advisor. I've searched for people online who are current students at the school some who are single moms also. After researching for a few months and finding answers to every one of my questions I'm more than content with applying. You can't base the experience you'll have at Chamberlain off someone else's experience at a school that has nothing to do with Chamberlain. Sorry but that doesn't even make sense. Every person I have found on Instagram who go to Chamberlain and those who I've meet and know in person here in Houston who attend Chamberlain, many of them are single moms and have nothing but amazing things to say about the school. One of the girls I know (a single mom) had to even take a break from the program because her child got sick and they let her take a few months off and come back in right where she left off. Not many nursing schools will offer that. At the open house at the Houston campus they explained that if you begin to fall behind or feel like you are falling behind, they have hired a few tutors to help you and spend one on one time with you so you do not fail or drop out. I'm applying to a number of schools but for many reasons pertaining to my children if Chamberlain accepts me I am willing to say it would be on the top of my list to choose from. I called around to the hospitals in and around Houston and in our famous medical center, I talked to HR departments and asked if they hired nurses who graduated from Chamberlain and after getting yes, yes, yes, I got an answer that had me finally stop calling around. The woman in HR department that I spoke to told me, "Unfortunately I can't give you that information. We don't keep track of what school our nurses graduated from. All we care about is if you pass you NCLEX and have your license." And that was at one of the biggest most predominate hospitals in Houston. With all that said, I'm a mother of 2 young girls too. I have a lot of help though, and I understand not everyone is as fortunate. If you have no other options, I do know they allow you to go to school part time if you choose Chamberlain. Any other school check to see if that is an option, I haven't so I can't give information on that, another option might be to go the ADN route. Loans are always my very last and final option but there's always that route. Maybe talk to the advisors at the schools you are looking to applying to, to see if their program fits your life style as mother. Then talk to their financial advisors to see what your financial options are for that school.

I am not a nurse, yet. I have 7 years of experience in the medical field. I am a medical assistant and have a bachelors in psychology and work with/do therapy with people who have neurological disorders. First it was on the clinical side now it's more of a therapy and analysis side. I didn't know what to put there, so I looked at other peoples profiles who were in the threads I was looking at and a few if them said they were MA's or CNA and claimed that as their experience. Which it's experience, the "about me" section didn't say "nursing" experience, it said "experience". So I put the number of years I've done what I've done and then added a description in the biography portion of the "about me" section. Also, it says "other education", where I've listed my previous degree. Then it lists "experience", it doesn't exactly specify experience to what, but being that this is a nursing/~medical forum I listed my experience pertaining to that.

You should talk to an advisor. Which campus are you applying to? I applied to the a Houston campus last night. I have an associates degree in arts and I'm Texas core complete (which means nothing to Chamberlain) and a bachelors in psychology. They looked over my transcripts and are taking all my prerequ's all sciences, but also English, math, history, then my previous degree is a science degree so it required statistics and some of the same classes Chamberlains program require so they said if I was accepted, they'd take those too. 56 of my credits would transfer in if I get accepted. I know when looking at my transcripts, they counted everything that was required for the nursing program just like any other school would.

Well darn. I haven't vented or complained about anything, but I've asked questions here and there. And I don't have my picture as my aviator but I do have it in my profile and I tried but I can't remove it. I guess I have to upload a new picture to the profile picture to remove my current one?

I just applied to Chamberlain Houston Campus. I've been studying for my HESI but still haven't taken it yet. I've been reading people's suggestions on which parts of the study guide to concentrate and find other books to elaborate on. Not sure if it matters to this school but I am a certified medical assistant and as far as my GPA's, Overall: 3.0 Science: 3.1 Bachelors Degree Science in Psychology: 3.6 I sent my transcripts in already and they told me they'd transfer in 56 of my credits if I was accepted in and that would cut my time down on how long it would take me to obtain my BSN from there. I've really dug as deep as I could into Chamberlains history before it was Chamberlain, and their present day accomplishments, talked to alumni, gone on the campus tour twice and heard all the negative things people have had to say (every single one of them never even went to the school), researched those negative things and proved them wrong. And now for many, many reasons (I can list them but it's a long list) besides the most important, their clinical sites, the graduation rate and Nclex passing rate, I really want to go to this school. I just need to pray I pass the HESI with flying colors and pray some more. I've took the TEAS for other schools and I hear the HESI is "easier". Not sure if that's true, I'll find out soon enough. Is anyone else out there applying to Chamberlain Houston or applied recently? How was the test? Did you get in? How soon did they let you know if so? Does anyone from any campus have any advice?

I'm sorry, I'm not applying to TWU so I am confused by what you are all talking about "1/4 2/4...first attempts". What does that mean? I'm not applying but I'm considering TWU so I'm just looking into their requirements.

I know this is a really old post but I wanted to say/ask where this misinformation was given from? Or is it just an assumption? Either way, I asked and the credits will transfer over for those who want to get a masters degree. If someone stumbled onto this thread like I did through Google, look into it a little more for yourself. I've seen another form where TWU DID say they would accept a BSN from chamberlain to get a masters from them and when I went to Chamberlains open house on Jan 21, 2014, I was told by the head of the department it would transfer over to a state school to get a masters. They have the same accreditation all the state schools do. I always hear such great things about this school from people who've actually gone there and a lot of cr@p talking from people who haven't done their homework on it and just assume because it's "for profit" its a bad school, and have never attended. Do your homework on any school before listening to others who never attended. I'm just saying.
