Global Health anyone?
Hi! I have not been on allnurses in a while. :) I have been working as an NP for over 10 years now. I enjoy the population I work with full time in my outpatient adult diabetes clinic. I also received my DNP last May, and am now also teaching online NP classes as an adjunct on the side. But for some reason, I have this feeling that I should be doing more. It's a little hard to explain, but I think I am getting frustrated with seeing one patient at a time and not feeling that I am making a huge difference. I took a class this past summer in Global Health/Public health and loved it. Now I think I might want to take a few more classes and get my certificate in Global Health (from UMASS Amherst, I love that school!). I think I am getting frustrated with not being able to make a big difference at the population level the longer I am in nursing. Does that make sense to anyone? I hope I am not crazy lol! My husband thinks I am crazy for taking more classes after I already received my DNP last year. Anyone else in my boat?? :) -Christine

Nurse Educator
I work full time as an NP. I only teach two classes online as an adjunct instructor for my side jobs. One class pays me $3300 to teach it, the other pays me $4500 to teach it. This way the money I make teaching is extra spending money for me, I love it! :) I am certified as an acute care NP and also Advanced Diabetes management. I have been a TA for one year, and have been a preceptor for many NP students and I was also an online student for my DNP so I am very comfortable with online learning. My DNP was a post masters general DNP :)

Nurse Educator
See my previous post. But also I found that it helped to mention on my resume that I had years of experience being a TA while in grad school and also that I acted as a preceptor for NP students at my full time NP Clinic job. I think having your doctoral degree also helps tremendously too, as both myself and my friend from my DNP program found online jobs within two months of graduation. Good luck!! :)

Nurse Educator
I am an NP (since 2008). I also just received my DNP last May, and I applied to many online adjunct professor jobs right after I got my DNP. I got a job offer after a month and now I teach two different classes at two different grad schools for NP students. I love it! :)

Novice Nursing Professor here! :)
Hi everyone! Wow, this is so very cool to be able to post this: I first came onto all nurses.com around 2005 or so when I first became an RN with my BSN. I have been an NP since 2008, and as of two months ago also received my DNP! :) I've been working full time as an NP for the past 9 years and also have acted as clinical preceptor for many MSN students in my clinic for their clinical rotations. However, now...I am also going to be teaching MSN students online. I'm so very excited! I have been looking over many books and journal articles on teaching. I've asked my own (former!) professors for tips...so now I'm asking you all for tips too. Please give me any tips or advice on what you learned about how to be a great nursing professor. :) Thanks! Christine

Any DNPs teaching in an online adjunct professor role??
Hello everyone! I have been working as an NP for over 8 years now. I also just graduated last week with my DNP. I am hoping to get a part time position teaching NP students online as an online adjunct professor. I applied to over 20 such positions so far. I am just wondering if anyone else in my position has successfully obtained a part time teaching position? It's a little difficult because many of the positions say experience is needed, but since I just graduated with my doctorate I don't have formal teaching experience in a classroom setting yet with NP students. However I do have (and I included this all in my resume and cover letter) experience giving group lessons to patients, giving presentations in the community, I've been a clinical preceptor for NP students since 2010, and many years ago I tutored college students in biology and then was a TA teaching General biology I & II labs. I'm hoping all of this helps me get a teaching position! :) Christine

Day in the Life of a Freelance Nurse Writer
Wow Elizabeth! Your day sounds great! Good for you! And I totally get what you mean about the high level of noise being upsetting! :) It is so nice to get home after a 9 hour day to a nice quiet home! :) I work full time as an NP. I have recently started a health and wellness blog and hope to do some freelance writing too soon on nursing, health, diabetes, nutrition and fitness. How did you find places to hire you? Do you write articles in print or online? How much do you get paid per article on average? Also, do you get "writer's block"? Thanks so much for the info! Christine

What/why do they say our classes are fluff?
Wow! Well you certainly have a strong opinion on this matter, and you're not even in a DNP program. I am very offended you call my classes fluff. Do you even realize how that comment of yours feels to DNP students working full time and going to school like me, who spend so much time and energy and love their program?? I think you should keep your comments positive and not be negative. Seriously. Who wants to hear this??
-
What/why do they say our classes are fluff?
If you are any DNP then fine, just don't apply to any DNP program. I don't think it's right to bash a program you are not even in especially for those of us working hard like me who are in a DNP program. I have no problem with someone choosing not to be in a DNP program but stop bashing them for your colleagues who believe in them.

What/why do they say our classes are fluff?
Perhaps you should consider going to medical school, as I see how highly you speak of it. I admire physicians with regards to their knowledge and experience but as a nurse I also value our doctorate programs too for different reasons. Especially because I am actually in a doctorate program so I know what I am talking about. Many people with negative comments on the DNP program are not actually in doctorate programs so how on earth would you know what you are taking about? Very sad. And if you don't like the DNP programs?? Then fine, don't be in one. But don't bad mouth them for those of us who believe in them. I will never understand why some in our profession feel it is ok to do this.
-
What/why do they say our classes are fluff?
Because we reference our work with peer reviewed sources. That is what makes them scholarly. It is unfortunate you do not see the value in my education, but that's ok. I see the value and that's all that matters to me. I refuse to let your negative comments and opinions upset me.

Health Blogging for NPs???
Hi everyone! Just curious as to see if any of you fellow NPs out there are also writing health blogs, whether online or in print. I have worked as an NP since 2008, and lately have been "itching" to branch out and do more than only see patients full time in my clinic. I am also now getting involved in precepting NP students, in working on my church's Health and Wellness committee, and also have just started up writing an online health blog/wellness site on Facebook too. I also recently applied to several health, nursing, and fitness sites to potentially write articles for them. Has anyone had experience with this? Would love to hear about how you did it! -Christine

What/why do they say our classes are fluff?
Hi! I am currently in an online post Master's DNP program and will graduate in May 2017. I definitely do not feel that the DNP classes in my program at UMASS Amherst are "fluff." I have worked so hard in all of the 14 or so classes that I have taken in this program: have read countless textbooks chapters, ebooks, scientific articles and have written so many scholarly posts and papers and project proposals! It has been a great program! :) -Christine

DNP student's project's proposal and IRB approval
Hi! Is anyone else a current DNP student who is also struggling with getting permission to just START their capstone project? I am graduating with my post-Master's DNP degree in May 2017, yet I have not started implementing my project yet. I have spent the past five months writing and editing my proposal over and over again, due to the very picky comments of my professors. A week ago i finally obtained approval from my professors to do my project. Now I am waiting to hear back from IRB with regards to them approving my project proposal….but I have to get approval from both my graduate school and also the university in which I work because that is where I'll be implementing my project. The first place gave me approval within two days but now the second site is wondering if I need to do a complete IRB form (different from the first form I did for the first site) for it first. Just wondering if other DNP students have gone through all this red tape that I have been going through…all just to do a non research QI project! -Christine

Where are you going for your DNP
I am almost halfway done with my DNP program. I already have a Master's degree in Nursing and am an NP. I work 40 + hours as an NP and take 2-3 classes per semester. My program is all online except for the clinical project during the last year. My DNP program is at UMASS-Amherst and the concentration is in public health which is why I chose this program. :) It is very time consuming and life can get crazy with all this working and studying but is still doable. DNP students & graduates: what do you love about your DNP education?
I am currently enrolled part time in a DNP program while I work full time as an NP. I really love my program and am in my 3rd class now and feel I am already learning so much. I am curious to hear from other DNP students and graduates about what they got out of their program and how it helped shape their future. Thanks!!!!

Work, Free time, and DNP program. Is it possible?
Hello! I work full time as an NP and I also am enrolled part time in an online DNP program that I love. I'm taking my 3rd class now. I chose an online program because I know I have to work full time, so an online program is so flexible in that I like to log on at breaks at work, after work, weekends...and I don't have to worry about changing my work schedule. I may take up to 2 classes some semesters so I can try to finish in not too long, but it is doable. Besides school and work, I do other fun things like exercise, go to church, take singing lessons, hang out with my boyfriend and friends and family, so it is possible to still have a life. You just need to balance everything. Good luck! :)

Capstone
Hi! I am in a DNP program as well. I am only at the beginning of the program (am in my 3rd class now). The best advice I received about the DNP capstone is to pick a topic you are very passionate about and use it to improve an area of health. For instance, I work as an NP in an adult diabetes clinic. I have a lot of Hispanic patients I see there, and I noticed so many are doing poorly. So my capstone is going to be focused on doing some type of intervention to improve their health outcomes. So you should also pick an area you are an expert in and/or want to improve. Best wishes!! Sent from my iPhone using allnurses.com
