  1. You can get many free CE approved by the AANP through Accredited Continuing Education Courses for Mental Health and Psychology Counselors and CME Conferences
  2. One word made the choice for me a no brainer...AUTONOMY ... PA's will never know it.
  3. Why dont you speak to the PA's working with the surgeon and try to get an idea from them on what to expect. Im sure your package will be very similar to theirs.
  4. @nursetim it cant be that bad!
  5. Yea what a rude coment by the office nurse. It would be nice to see how she felt if she was layed off, her husband was coming back from a war zone aaaannnd she gets her request DENIED!! Anyways dont worry with anything tomorrow but your husband!
  6. The pay is lousy and you get treated badly? Thats horrible then :/
  7. You mentioned you were in music city. Are you referring to Nashville, Tennessee? Don't give up hope. If you are willing to relocate there are many many places that will hire you! Expecially rural places.
  8. Nice! Florida needs to follow soon! Florida is by far one of the most restrictive states for NP's ?
  9. I could have sworn that I read that somewhere but I couldnt find the 2015 deadline anywhere. 2025 it is!
  10. Oops thanks for the catch I meant AACN not ANCC!
  11. To be honest I wish I was working there and that doc came up and stood behind me with an attitude expecting the chair! She's going to be waiting for a while! I'd take extra long. Bet you she wont stand behind me next time. The other doc that made that comment to you it would be nice to grab her on tape or hidden camera saying something like that. It sounds like there is systemic harassment in your place of work and if I were you I would leave that job. If they are allowed to get away with behavious like this unchecked, HR is probably well aware and they probably wont do anything to change it.
  12. That seems awfully low! And ontop of that bad benefits, there is call and its for a salary not hourly or per patient! There's no way. I would negociate the package way up. Take a look at this 2012 NP & PA Salary Survey Results on ADVANCE for NPs & PAs
  13. For Nurse Practitioners the DNP is just a recommendation by the ANCC. It is no mandatory by any state including Nebraska. However if what you wish to study is anesthesia the AANA has made the doctorate degree a requirements by 2015 for all states. Hope this helps.
  14. Wow you give up your seat when you are charting everytime a doctor come to the NURSES STATION? You are too nice! Its going to take you telling them I'll give you the seat when im finished charting for them to stop expecting ridiculous behaviour. In any case it sounds like you need to move from that hostile work environment. Oh and dont apologize to them because they are mad unless its your mistake. If you dont set boundaries everyone is going to take advantage of you.
  15. I think in most situations transitioning into a new NP role where you used to work as an RN is not going to be beneficial to your practice. There are some exceptions such as in PsychiatricNP's case. The problem is that your coworkers are going to have a hard time realizing your new role. This added to the fact that you lack experience may be problematic. If you love where you currently work maybe apply to a unit where you don't know anyone or find a job somewhere else and come back once you have acquired experience and confidence.
  16. Although practicing as an RN would definitedly be benefitial to you, it is not necessary for you to thrive as an NP. What you do as an RN and what you do as an NP are completely different. If you're going to become an NP, the faster you do it the better. My recommendation is to start school ASAP!
  17. I worked full time the first year of my FNP schooling but on very rarely did a per diem or two during my second year. If you can afford to go to school fulltime do that! Its a lot less stressfull for sure and you can dedicate all your energy to studying. Besides working as an RN and as an NP are like night and day so you wont loose anything by not working as an RN.
  18. And dont just think about getting into Georgia Regents. You may have to relocate to anywhere in the country to go to school.
  19. Since you will already have a master's, there are post master certificate programs for FNP. I would def look into that if I were you.
  20. I always like to follow up on my patients if possible (some of them may not return to follow up appointments), especially if a prescription is given for acute disease such as AOM to ensure resolution. Even if the problem doesn't seem too complicated I would still give them a follow up visit. You never know what could happened and in the event you are sued you defense is going to be a lot stronger with a follow up visit. Just my opinion.
  21. You need to get all A's from here on... D's and C's definitedly hurt your chances of getting into any program since they are all very competitive. You will more than likely need more than once year of ICU experience. I know CRNAs thats have no ICU expirience but instead had ER experience when they applied to their program. I would visit the school that you mentioned and get some info directly from them. Im also sure you can get their info online. But if you talk directly to them they can tell you experience needed, GRE scores etc. Remember that what they will tell you is just the minimum requirements to be admitted but it doesnt guarantee a spot because these programs are very competitve. Also try to shadow a CRNA for a a day or two to see if thats what you really want to do.
  22. I agree with Juan. You should ask your school and each institution you go to. Some of the sites wanted us to sign as RNs with our license#
  23. What are you doing your MSN in? Each NP program has their specific requirements listed once you visit their website directly. Generally you don't have to have a set amount of clinical hours to start the program. You don't have to do the Doctorate program and a lot NP schools are not switching from MSN to DNP yet as this is only a recommendation. If you want to work with peds and family do an FNP which encompasses peds and adults alike. I would recommend visiting programs websites and seeing what they offer and their requirements. Some programs are online (except clinicals of course) and other are on site learning.
