  1. The exam covers a lot of material and it seems there is no way anyone could readily be familiar with everything (peds, onc, joints, etc.) I read the entire core curric. and took each test at the end and just kept reviewing my weaknesses. There is a lot of content about TJR but it can easily be reviewed. The exam is difficult--4 hours long-200 questions. Just take your time and you will pass
  2. I recommend Adult Orthopedic Nursing by Delores Schoen
  3. During my second pregnancy I worked orthopedics full time, usually 12 hour shifts. It was difficult because not only was I a new grad but also I gained a lot of weight quickly (I was hungry a lot), so I was very slow and felt worse off than most of the patients. I found that at a certain point I had to put the well being of my baby first (I had to stop being stubborn and start asking for help). Most people are more than eager to help but there are some who will say "I worked until I went into labor" or simply do not understand that not every pregnancy is the same for every person and working with orthopedic patients is hard enough when you're fit-the patients are heavy, in pain, and need to move so you're setting yourself up from the beginning. Just listen to your body and don't over do it and remember some days are better than others.
  4. Hello! I recently became ortho certified and wanted some useful information to keep my knowledge up to date without using the Ortho core curriculum (very boring). I found a paperback text titled Adult Orthopedic Nursing (Delores C. Schoen). It is excellent-everything that I wished I had while I was studying for the ONC exam. There are fantastic illustrations and it contains a great deal about body mechanics specific to injury, fracture, and or post-op and joint replacement--also how to properly move the patient in bed and proper repositioning (THR, lamis, etc.) Anyway, I can't remember but I think this book was advertised in NAON--I found the same thing on the internet for $23.00 (it was $45 from NAON)! Title: Adult Orthopedic Nursing Author: Delores Schoen Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
  5. I just got my results today that I passed!! :balloons: I'm so relieved! It was a difficult exam but I'm glad I did it. Now if I can just keep up with the CE hours to maintain certification.
  6. Hi, I took the exam in Philadelphia. I think there was only one other nurse there for the ortho cert exam, the rest were for med-surg and other stuff. She finished in less than two hours, I was there over three. I think I recovered from all of the stress of actually taking the test, I just have to deal with everyone asking me how the test went, if I passed! It just reminds me too much. I'm sure it will be worth it, though!
  7. Hello, I took the ortho cert exam on April 30th. I studied solely from the naon core curriculum. I read the entire book over about two weeks and then tried to focus on the main issues (DJD, trauma). I did the test questions at the end of each chapter and went over those a couple times. I felt that the test was difficult and I am not certain how to feel about it-if I passed or not. I'll be thrilled if I passed but I'm not so sure. My former nurse manager took the cert exam and passed but she is the only other person who I know who has taken it. I was told it takes 4-6 weeks to get the results. One way to look at it is that you need a 70% to pass so you could get up to 60 questions wrong! I hope you get your results soon and that everything goes well!
