I feel like all these pet peeves occur every single day! One big one I have is when the seekers ask you to push the dilaudid faster and at the bottom port because the last nurse did that. Pfft the only thing I do after that is push it slow at the top port of a saline drip and dilute it in a 10ml syringe.
  2. I just had a nurse tell me that a Doc accidently ordered a patient 120 pills of 2mg Dilaudid as a prescription. Luckily the nurse caught the error before he gave the patient the prescription. Can't imagine giving someone that many pills!
  3. Lindarn, I am interested in going into the Air Force reserves as a flight nurse. Would it be ok if I PM you? I would like to actually talk to a flight nurse before I talk to a recruiter just so I know what to expect.
  4. Ok gotcha. I guess the best thing to do is talk to a healthcare recruiter. Or if possible a flight nurse in the guard or reserves. Thanks for your help.
  5. Yeah I am not planning on going in until I complete my BSN. In the meantime I am trying to get as much experience as possible. As for the recruiters thanks for the tip. The one recruiter that I work with is giving my information to some people she knows that are around the area that she trusts. She told me my best bet is to go Air Force active duty. So if I wanted to be a flight nurse they would require critical care nursing? Say I had about 2 years of ER experience (I do not have any, but I may have an interview in the next couple weeks for one) they may consider that experience? Will I have to compete with other nurses for a limited amount of positions or do they take decent experience nurses and mold them to be great flight nurses? I would love to do flight nursing but if I can't then thats not a problem. I just want to know how competitive and which route would be best.
  6. I have been wanting to join the military as a nurse. Mostly looking at reserves and not active duty. My cousin is in the Air Guard and I believe he is an engineer, not healthcare, and he told me to look into the Air National Guard. I spoke with a nurse I work with who was an Army healthcare recruiter and she told me to be careful. She said for any branch healthcare recruiters will tell you what you want to know and of course it won't be true. I told her I do not mind deploying but I rather stay away from it because I will be starting a family and be married by around 2017, my Fiance and I are waiting because she has to finish school and I am 1/4 through my BSN. I do have an associate's degree in nursing with about 9 months of med/surg experience and I am 23. What I want to know is how nursing is in the Air Guard, Air Force active or Air Force reserves? I live in Maryland and there is an Air Guard center in Baltimore but there is a big base in Dover Delaware which is an hour and a half from me. They do have flight nursing which is a possible interest for me as well as clinical nursing. I know when I talk to a recruiter they will most likely lie and/or give me false hope because they have to fill quotas. I want to talk to a nurse who is in the Air Guard to get a better idea of what it is like rather than from a recruiter.
  7. Good news I passed my boards! I also scored a proficient on the TEAS test which I got a 80.7% which sounds like it is pretty good. I am now applying to both schools and looking to set up a phone call or meeting with one of the ROTC officers at University of Maryland. I will try and update on how it goes and what my options are for any other people.
  8. I guess I am in a predicament because i just accepted a full-time nursing job at my local hospital. I want to get my BSN as soon as possible which means I have to apply by February 12th or so. I have already started working on everything so it won't take me long to apply once I finish my NCLEX and TEAS test. The issue is that my parents are leaving to go to Germany in July and are leaving the house to me and my girlfriend. So we are paying rent to them and paying for all utilities. I want to do ROTC and take my BSN classes so that ROTC can pay for them. But, it sounds like I wont have time to work and pay for bills since I would have to be a full-time student. I guess unless I do very easy online classes. Oh Merry Christmas by the way!
  9. With the online course I live in Maryland so only about 35 minutes away from UMD and they have their ROTC classes at John's Hopkins. I understand what you mean by University of Nevada ROTC and online at UMD. But I wouldnt see the problem since I won't be a campus student I will commute to Hopkin's for ROTC and online classes for UMD. Does that make sense? So i am assuming I would not be able to work part time while being full time at school with ROTC? That is why I wanted to do online because online would be easier for me so I don't have to commute for school but only commute for ROTC while still being able to work. So if i prolonged it to two years you said I would have to add a few extra classes? Do you think it would be like BS classes like basket weaving or phys ED that I could do? I do not want to minor in anything else. I was figuring that I would be considered full-time if I was part-time taking RN-BSN classes while doing ROTC classes. Thank you for the help by the way. It is very helpful. So in regards to LTC, if I only took a two year RN-BSN program than would I have to take LTC this summer or next summer or not at all since I would not have to go on to the last two years since I am only doing 2 years instead of 4. I am not worried about doing reserves to be honest. I rather do reserves but i wouldn't mind doing active duty. I just don't want to get screwed by the Army and put into a different specialty.
  10. I was researching the LTC and here is the website Leader's Training Course | goarmy.com The way it sounds is that you can take this course as an option to propel you directly into the Advanced upperclassman classes. I may be wrong so someone can clarify that for me. For me I want to start in Fall 2014 but I see a problem because if i was to be accepted (say around March or so) than that does not give me much time between being accepted and starting the program before even stepping foot on a campus and a ROTC unit.
  11. -Can you do Army ROTC through an RN to BSN program? I have been talking to an Army ROTC officer at a school I will be applying to. I have only emailed him a few times so I haven't received much information. However, he stated that he currently has a RN to BSN student in his ROTC program. So i may have answered my own question with that. But would I have to go full time or can i got part time? If I went full time I would be finished in about a year. If I prolonged it I could go two years which sounds like the minimum to be in ROTC. If I decided to go part time and prolong my education for 2 years will they allow me to be in ROTC? -I am also looking at a program (University of Maryland School of Nursing) that offers RN-BSN online. Do you think they would allow RN-BSN online as well as going through ROTC? -I just graduated nursing school two weeks ago (thank god!) I do take my NCLEX on Friday. After I take my NCLEX i am scheduled to take a TEAS V test to be able to transfer to another school. After my NCLEX i plan on calling the ROTC officer who wanted to speak to me because he said my situation was "unique" because I want to do RN-BSN online and ROTC for 2 years. Ill post any updates but right now I am looking to pass boards and start applying to schools. Just two in fact.

  13. Hi everyone I am in a ****** situation it seems like. I really need some advice. I am a 23 year old male who graduates with an associates degree in 2 weeks and hoping to take the NCLEX on December 23rd. My issue is that I work as a nurse intern at my local hospital that I have been a tech at for 2 years, one year med surg and one year ER exp. My problem now is that the internship I took I was under the impression that I was guaranteed a job after graduation. Well that's not true. My hospital also has to fire you if you take the NCLEX and receive an RN degree bc they don't want you to work under your license. So I am stuck in limbo bc the hospitals I have applied for won't look at my application until I get my license number. The hospital I am at has like 5 openings and I have applied for them. So far no luck for an interview. Now I cannot prolong my NCLEX bc I want to apply for an RN/BSN program for fall 2014 but the deadline is January 15th so I can't put off the NCLEX. Now I just had an interview with an urgent care that may give me an offer. My problem is that my preceptor is telling me not to go to urgent care. I need help! I need a job and people are telling me not to go to urgent care. He said I should just wait to get a job at a hospital first. I'd rather have that but I have not gotten anything from any hospital. Lhasa anyone been in a situation like mine? Also I am in Maryland. Does anyone know what a new grad would potentially make in MD? Thanks for any help!
  14. I did a little research the past few days and have been in contact with some ROTC programs. It sounds like once i graduate in a month i should start looking for an RN-BSN school that also has an ROTC program associated with it. Since i am in Maryland i have access to a few schools that offer both programs such as John's Hopkins and University of Maryland. So right now I am thinking about applying to both places and whichever one I get into I can then decide whether I want to go the ROTC route or not. This information has come from an Army ROTC officer. Do you think Army would be the way to go or Air Force?
  15. Awesome! I am looking at your blog and it has alot of information on it! So i am assuming the easiest way to actually get in would be to join a ROTC program which should one pay for school and get me into the military without having to pass any boards. Does that sound about right?
