  1. I understand there are people with AIDs. Thank you though. And further, we haven't even talked about it yet and I just wanted be sure. I am unfamiliar with the disease and was just asking. Just because it's a pretty bad thing to have. Thank you everyone for being so helpful...
  2. Hello fellow nurses and students! So in clinical yesterday and today we were giving flu and pneumonia shots (it's my first semester). One patient, who we later found out TODAY (after doing a bed and brief change and flu shot on) has AIDS. Yesterday before giving him the shot I took his temp and pulse--no gloves. He was kind of drooling on himself, and some was on the hand I touched for his radial pulse. I'm positive I did it with my right hand, I always do, and yesterday I got a bad papercut on my left index finger (before contacting this patient). I don't think I would have had any contact with that hand and the saliva, and I hand sanitized after, but I'm freaking out now that we found that out. I'm not discriminating, I'm just concerned about my health. I have read it's not possible to get it from saliva, and I called my doctor to check and he didn't think I have anything to worry about, but I'm definitely still worried. Any advice??? Should I get tested just in case? And yes, I should have worn gloves. He was out in the common area and none were available (the facility is pretty bad with sanitizer and gloves). Thank you in advance!!
  3. Hello! I had my orientation last Thursday night. We got to tour our labs and meet the teacher and the dean of the nursing program. I am so excited to start!! Everyone is so helpful and really wants to see us succeed. It's a small program--only 56 first semesters! Our first day of class is this Monday, the 19th. I just have to finish my 8:30-5 CPR for healthcare professionals course Wednesday, and then I'm all set! Our clinicals are from 6:45-12:45 for two days a week, unless you get one of the two 12 hour clinical options, then it's from 6:45 to 7:15 for one day a week. I'm trying to keep a job this semester, so I guess I'll see how that goes with everything. Good luck to all! Hal
  4. I've only paid $155 so far, but that's for 3 books. Need one more, it's only like a $50 book! If you get the student Amazon account, you get free Prime shipping (2 day shipping is free on somethings!). You just have to remember to cancel after 60 days because then they will charge you $40!
  5. I also had trouble getting in contact with my school. It's my first semester too! What I had to do was a physical, as well as updating immunizations. I had to have proof of: Tetorifice booster in the last two year (ouchie) 2 MMRs 2 Varicella or 1 with a positive titer or proof of illness (I thought this was weird, but you actually have to have 2) Hep B sequence And you do need a TB test annually. Don't do any of the live vaccines, like Varicella, at the same time as the TB or it will interfere with the TB results. I had to get the Tetorifice, TB, and Varicella, so I did TB and Tetorifice first, and then a week later got the Varicella. I also have to get recertified in CPR, this time for healthcare providers. And the very first step was a background check. Good luck! It's a lot of work!
