Hello, I am an experienced nurse looking into changing specialties. I have applied to multiple ICU positions one month ago and have not received a call back. I am starting to get nervous, how long did it take for you to get offered an interview after applying for a position?

Some context: Pt had surgery, and doctors did not resume some of pt's BP meds. Since the previous day, Pt had SBP in 200s. Nurse on each shift called the doctor to complain pt's BP was that high. The doctor would order an extra PRN and SBP would go back down. Later though, it would spike back up. During my shift, his SBP was 200. Called the doctor who told me to wait because I had given his regular medications and PRN medications (I called 30 minutes after giving IV BP medications and not seeing a change) by 12pm SBP is 169. They ordered an extra one time dose PRN and told me they were aware and monitoring. Informed my charge nurse (and clinician) of this guys BP, who called the doctor personally as well. She looked through his chart and said he's done this before. By 4pm, the pt's BP spikes back up, I give all the PRNs again. At shift change, I told the nurse I gave BP medications roughly 40 minutes ago. I reminded the charge nurse his BP was crazy high, and she told me to give the extra prn medications. I was hoping it would go down on night shift because I gave the most potent one ordered. Also during the shift, he pulled out his dobhoff (completely alert and oriented patient, he was just "moving around and it came out"). By 6:30pm I found out it was coiled in the stomached, and it needed attempted reinsertion. His IV also went bad and he's a hard stick which was replaced during my shift. I passed this onto night shift, who complained the whole time. She was mad his BP was high and was mad she would have to reinsert a dobhoff. Both of us never did it before. I got a senior nurse to help me, and I suggested she do the same. Anyway She sent me an email the next day, complaining the charge nurse was mad his BP was so high all day, and complained she spent multiple hours in the room and neglected her other patients. I thought this was completely unprofessional and rude. I did what I could. I am a nurse with 8 months of experience, so I'm still learning. Is there anything you can suggest? I felt I did what I could, but this coworker doesn't think so.

I'm in acute care but pay is $23.07 for me. the only hospitals that pay more is Baycare (which for me had a higher nurse to patient ratio) and moffitt. however this is for acute care so things might be different.

Hello, While I did not fail the NCLEX, my friend was not so fortunate. I am trying to comfort her during this devastating time. Our school has one of the highest NCLEX pass rates in the state and while our school told us stories about students who had failed (no names), she is concerned the nursing school will find out she failed and contract her. How do schools keep updated with their pass rate?

Stay positive. The NCLEX process is very scary and I'm sorry that the test was so vague. Please keep us updated, I have a similar UWORLD score! Know that that this feeling is shared by many who take the NCLEX. It isn't just you!

Congrats! I am using UWORLD (finished 100% of it and redoing questions until my NCLEX). While I see that NCSBN and Saunders are popular study tools on AN, what are your opinion of it?

When I try inviting you I get the message of "You can only send invitations to email addresses within the community. External email domains are not supported." It's closed but you should be able to join. But I can't invite you myself. If this doesn't work I recommend you change your facebook email to the UCF one.

I will be accepting the summer ABSN. I'm excited to start. I've just started to gather the required information. I wish the college recommended placed to get CPR certified, etc.

Hello, I am starting an ABSN program starting in the summer in Florida and reading the threads so far have terrified me! I was wondering if you can give any advice to those while in the nursing program about ways to gain an upper edge in this competitive job atmosphere. I am 23 years old and have no job experience. While in the nursing program I want to make sure I can do as much as possible to ensure a job afterwards.

I will be calling too tomorrow. I want to stress to CON that multiple people are in this position and need decisions from UCF to be made. I think it's ridiculous that the school takes this long to make any sort of decisions.

I was simply agreeing with you that those who did not get in can reapply, that if they know the essay was the issue. I wasn't giving you advice. The rest for everyone, it gives a different perspective on how I wrote the essay. There's no exact formula for a good essay, what you found effective I didn't find necessarily. It gives different ideas on how to improve the essay for others to work on. I wasn't directing this only at you. I'm just stating that there's different ways to write the essay, everyone writes differently.

@ArgaSJ It is awesome that USF has another application window at the end of the month. It was my back-up plan if I didn't get in. But remember that it maybe easier for students to be accepted into the 2nd degree sequence vs upper division. The average GPA of those in the 2nd degree is a 3.5 while the upper division is a 3.8. So GPA maybe a factor too. I'd possibly call the college and ask why you were rejected and what you can do to increase those chances. With my essay (i'm 2nd degree) I discussed my essay in a chronological sequence. Meaning how I came to nursing, and along the way answered the 3 questions. I did not say "I want to help people" or that my "grandmother had pancreatic cancer and was in the hospital" (which actually happened around the time I decided to pursue nursing). My mother attempted to help, but completely reworked my essay to where it had paragraphs dedicated and too tailored to the questions. It was boring and I flat-out rejected it.I only had my mother read it too. The attempt of being too direct made me sound like a robot. Again I discussed my journey as the theme to my essay. I think it's essentially important to discuss (for 2nd degree) on why you chose the career of nursing. I was pretty sure I would be rejected from USF because 2 years ago I left a masters program there (mid-semester mind you). So I had A LOT to explain. I also used the USF's mission, etc. from their website and used it to my advantage in my essay. I wanted them to see that I looked and researched their program. My writing is horrible, but I attempted to eliminate the use of pronouns, or redundant things. I tried to keep it interesting by including humor. I made a reference to Darth Vader and Lord of the Rings. I also used academic history, experience as a hospital volunteer, etc. in my essay as well. GPA is also a factor. I had a 4.0 pre-req and 3.8 overall GPA at the time of application too.

Question: Does UCF ABSN track have students do clinicals their first semester?

I got accepted too! Hopefully other people here got in. I applied to both ABSN and regular track. I was accepted into the accelerated track, no answer on the traditional! Just SOAR. Scratch that, just received an email. Congrats on those who got in! I am still waiting for admission decisions from UCF. I'll be either going to USF or UCF.
