What more do I have to do to get a job in the ER?
Guess it really isn't a long story, at all. Plus, earlier in the year when I was trying to apply I had a minor speeding ticket that put a damper on my record when applying for the co. You can only have 1 ticket within 3 years, and I had two that I had received over two years ago.So that little issue had stopped me in the past as well, now, it's just the fact that there is a lack of positions. Yeah, I am looking into volunteering hospitals, or places where I can get on the job training for my CNA,possibly.(I know all my friends who got hired in a hospital happened to be CNAs,if they didn't have the experience). I would just hate to go to school, pay another thousand dollars, and find myself in the same boat. Plus, I am already doing my pre-reqs for nursing, plus at 40+ hour schedule, so I'm not exactly looking to add a small program on my schedule to top it off, you know what I mean ?

What more do I have to do to get a job in the ER?
I would love to do that, except, they don't have any part time positions open right now. It is the dream situation for a lot of students, that's why those positions fill much faster then the full time positions. They simply told me that if everybody was part time like they'd like to be, they wouldn't have a company. It's not that I don't want to, it's that there hasn't been the opportunity. We only have one private ambulance company where I live.

What more do I have to do to get a job in the ER?
Sassy5d- Thank you! I don't have any drama with the ambulance company out here. I actually interviewed with them in the past, but, I was interviewing for a FT position, and they said by company policy they only offer those in school with a PT position, they currently don't have PT positions available, because like me, a lot of others are also in school as well.

What more do I have to do to get a job in the ER?
Trauma Surfer- I know what techs do in the ER. I know that they don't push drugs, and I even know that most of them don't do IVs sometimes. I have seen techs work in different parts of the hospital, as well as I have friends who have been techs in the past. I know it's a lot of BS, I know it's not lights and sirens, I know it's not like TV, the movies, or even the wild stories. I have seen the BS.I know that they act as techs, but,it's the exposure that I want, the atmosphere. Yes, you're right, I am not a RN, I don't have a BSN, and only my certification. But, I am alone in an office at an elementary school, I do EVERYTHING that a LPN, or RN would do in an office. Yes, I can give medication, I can do procedures, and it does have to be signed off by a physician and parent that I have been taught how to do that. It is our district policy. We do have an RN, and she works at her own office, and I have mine.I am a health tech, I know that. That's why I said without the certification, I know that they have much more knowledge then I do. Yes, like I said "Playing" the role of lead paramedic. I was under the supervision of the paramedics on the fire department, but, I had to make all the calls, telling the EMTs and other medics what to do. If I made a mistake, they would be there to correct me, but, I took the lead on the calls, it was towards the "vehicular" part of my education, all medic students do this. Yes, I know the dialysis center has specific training, it's on the job training, they look for various certifications beneath RNs. Yes, this school nursing job doesn't fit me, and there's a lot of factors that play into it, we have a new staff in this district EVERY year. I have 40 kids some day in a 7 hour time period by myself, and there's a lot expected out of me, it does get frustrating. I am allowed to not like a job.Every year at this school we have new staff too, various degrees and years of experience, does that say anything ? I would just rather, if I could choose, to work in a medical based setting, not an education based setting, which is a school system. There's more to that story, different administrators have had a lot of problems with that particular parent. We were going off of physicians orders, and having her breath in the medication, instead of blow by. I was asking for advice to get in as a tech, the same position that CNA's get into. Yes, I know they have the bed side manner in their education that we don't necessarily, but, we do go through many more hours of school vs. a CNA. I understand that I have little experience, I am asking what I could do based off of my situation and the little that I do have in getting my foot in the door to get more, that's all.

What more do I have to do to get a job in the ER?
Yeah, I'm in the process of getting into a RN program right now. I go online and there's 3 pages for RN job posting, and maybe one position for something I could fit into.

What more do I have to do to get a job in the ER?
Alright, a little background which might make my situation a little bit different then those who posted previously. I am certified as a Paramedic. I went through hours of clinical time in different hospitals, emergency rooms, burn units, ob/gyn, pediatrics, and time on the ambulance playing the role of the lead paramedic. I currently work as a health tech at a school, I'm basically a school nurse without a certification. I also did a few months as a stand by emt for a youth football team assessing concussions and other sports injuries. Before I landed this job in the school I put in at least a HUNDRED applications, dialysis centers, hospitals, rehab centers, etc. Had a few interviews, but, long story short, I don't have enough experience to even be considered where I really want to: the emergency room, I mean, I did become a paramedic for a reason, right ? (There's a reason I don't work the ambulance co. out here, too, long story) I'd always get the same email back "We regret to inform you...." What more could I do ? I've put in an application to volunteer, but, even that is pretty full out here. Let me know, even your experience in getting in. I would even love to be on any floor really, and I have my PALS/ACLS.

it happened!
My dog sounds smarter then your school staff. LOC in anybody should be an automatic 9-1-1 call by whoever saw it. Why did they insist on calling you over and over ?

Crazy mother over SVN treatment.
We all have those crazy mothers, right ? Mom's who think they know everything over you, you know, because you weren't medically trained in anything, they just put you in this job. Had this student came in the other day requesting her SVN treatment, she wasn't even in any kind of distress, could have rested and have been better, but, her mom knows best, so if she asks for the treatment, we give it to her. Okay, fine, we give it to her. She hooks it up herself, and instead of placing her lips around the piece, she just holds it in front of her face, mind you, while all the medication is blowing around her. We tell her a couple of times, in the nicest way to take deep breaths and really breath in her medication. We even called mom to let her know she was in there. Mom picked her up mad, okay, mind you, mom is crazy, whatever. She then comes in on Friday(I was out of town) and yells at my assistant(who is a medical assistant) saying that we don't know what we are doing, how dare we tell her daughter to do something different then what she was been doing the wrong way. She then came in today to hand me a care plan of exactly how she wanted the treatment to be given, all she wrote was "take breaths normally" and she also said she would take this up with her PCP about this issue. She basically wants the physician to prove that what I did was wrong. I basically told her she could do that. She also said that we weren't even medical professionals, I told her "Well, I am a paramedic" and all she replied was "Yeah, well you're still not an RN" Did I do the wrong thing ? How would you have handled it ?

Getting bored.
When I had to call 9-1-1 for a seizure earlier in the year, the fire dept. care. They asked me what I was certified in and I told them I was a medic, they just kind of gave me a funny look and asked me why I worked here, and I get that A LOT. First thing that comes out of people's mouth is "Are you a nurse?" and when I explain to them that I am a paramedic, they look at me like I'm the step child of the community, haha. I do feel like the black sheep of the community a bit.The reason why I am here is because I didn't get in with the ambulance company out here. ( long story)...and I came out of medic school with very little job experience, and no hospital work experience, so getting in with a hospital had slim to none chances, and I applied at every hospital within a 50 mile radius of where I lived for many different positions..I would love to get something more "hands on" but, it's hard to find hospital jobs out here(AZ). Thanks for the advice, I do call home on a lot of kids, and I literally get mad at my frequent flyers when they walk in my door. I say "WHY ARE YOU HERE?!" instead of a "what's wrong?" kind of greet. It's hard convincing the teachers not to send me their kids, they have little to no medical knowledge, and panic at the smallest site of blood...but, I'm trying to work on that.

Getting bored.
Yeah, I think I'll just use this as a stepping stone to get into the ER or something more. I am just trying to survive the rest of the year, and it does make me feel better that I am not the only one who is frustrated in the first year coming off. Thanks guys for listening ! :) Glad to know it can get easier down the road.

Getting bored.
Hello, I recently started at a k-8 school in August of this year. Even though I haven't even made it through October yet, I find myself, well... getting bored of it already, and a bit frustrated. My Mondays start out with 50 kids, abd. pain, bloody noses, "wet" accidents, a-z of minor things, most of which teachers really can take care of in their classrooms. It can be very overwhelming from time to time, especially considering I'm riding solo through this mess.I'm watching myself becoming one of those mean nurses, especially when I'm going down the line of frequent flyers/fakers throughout the day. I also notice this same attitude with the other techs working at the school. Also, I find myself getting bored. It's very routine, and almost too routine, I don't have a lot of down time most days, but, when I do I find myself at a loss of what to do. I graduated from a paramedic program and this was my first job offer(had a little bit of a mix up with the ambulance company). Just need advice, maybe words of encouragement to get me through these next 6 months. I'm wondering if this is just the first year blues, or what...and I'm kind of just ranting, it's been one of those days. Thanks guys !

EMS call what would you do?
You're the medical professional, not the parent(and if she was in the medical field, I'd be very surprised). Stand strongly by that, you did what you thought was in the best interest of the student, and yes, it was in their best interest. I've seen more concern from parents about the "sniffles", shame on her as a parent.

Do you feel that School Nurses are respected in the school system???
I see about 50 kids on Mondays, talk about overwhelming.
