I read your experience and i must say that im not surprised. I am an Afircan American nurse and I have experienced racism. During my experience i felt because i was new and not much experience i was at the mercy of who was teaching me and i had to let racist comments go because i had to learn the job, but let me tell you you DO NOT have to subject yourself to any racist comments from no one! Know your value and skill set and what you have to offer to an organization be confident and do not just settle for what people with no respect dish out! Tell your preceptor you are uncomfortable with the comments then Talk to management and let them know you are uncomfortable with your preceptor and if that doesn't work find another place to work!!! Any form of racism from anyone is just unacceptable to me!!

Hi, I am a Pediatric RN and that is where I began my nursing career in a private office. I started as an LPN and went back got RN and practiced at the same clinic as an RN. I was the only RN that ever practiced at the clinic. It was wonderful I enjoyed it thorought; however, it was repetitive, i seen the same illness everyday, so now Im in the hospital on a Pediatric unit and Im learning alot more. there are a variety of illness we treat and I wish I had done this first before going to a private clinic. I do miss the mon-fri schedule very much to where I will be soon returning to a clinic after I receive much knowledge from the peds unit. also the pay in hospital is alot more for me than a private setting. so its just up to you whether you want to keep your consistent schedule and if youre ok with the pay and the limited knowledge you would have. I wish you the best on your decision!!!

Wow!! thank you shantheRN!!! I totally understand when you say when you clock out you don't take it home!! I learned that a long time ago!! I haven't shadowed anyone yet, where I live the closest hospital that has this type of unit is about a hour and 1/2 to get there. But maybe I could speak with someone at the hospital and set that up. I know there are a lot of dynamics when it comes to pediatric hematology/oncology, but with nice people like yourself offering informative information i will be able to get something moving to see if thats what i want to continue to try to pursue!! thanks again

Hello fellow nurses, I have been a nurse for 8 years and I have worked in pediatrics for 7 of those years. I have worked only in a pediatric private office. the career I want to embark upon is pediatric hematology/oncology; however, I do know what to do to get to that career path. Im wondering if i should go back to the hospital as i have worked med/surg for about 6 months and work in peds at the hospital or try to get to the floor. Please if someone could give me advice if you already work in that department or just how to get to this goal of mine. thanks

Lovely!! Im a pediatric nurse, and it is my passion!! I work in a physician's office and trying to get a job where I can work in hospital setting at least 2 weekends out of the month. Im hoping to be able to become a nurse specializing in pediatric oncology!!! very nice post.

I am a currently working as a school nurse. I have been working at local school system for about 6months only to find out it is not anything as i anticipated. I have to answer to much staff on where I am at all times, and i am pulled from one school to the nurse because the principal feels i should be there!! I service two schools and I have never been formally introduced to these principals and I have one principal that never speaks to me only when it is regarding a student and then she just bombards my office without even speaking, she just goes right into what it is she needs!! I say to myself I should have a mop in my hand and be a janitor, because they are getting more respect than i am for my skill. I have 7yrs of pediatric experience so they really have a skilled nurse that's working with them; however, they give me NO respect as a nurse, and demands things of me with their school. I do not tolerate disrespect or what I feel is disrespect towards me, and they cant handle that!! Needless to say I am resigning, and glad about it!! I feel that this school system (including principals) need to recognize that nurses have just as much education if not more than they do and needs to be respected for their skill and craft!! what do you all think?????

Rachelrn89 I must say you are not the only one that feels that way & it's common to feel that way, however you do have to roll wit the punches, and just do the best you can while you're there. Your time mgmt will get better and prioritizing will also. I worked night shift on med-surg unit as I am a new grad and on nights it's a lil slower and you have time to gather thoughts mgmt and prioritize but I start days next week and I'm very nervous about that because it is busy and you have a lot more going on,but I already have a made up mind to do much best and that's it! And I'm sticking to it! Hope you have experienced nurses who may help you with suggestions on how to prioritize and use gd time mgmt, because I can say that I do have a lot of nurses that I can go to who will be willing to help me out with questions & that really does make a difference! Thanks. Good luck to you as well. I will take your advice and stay positive because I to will be on my own in one week but I'm gonna try to take it one step at a time.

I am a recent graduate of Nursing and I have started working at a local hospital on a med-surg floor. I am feeling overwhelmed and its so busy I feel so down because working I feel like I know nothing about nursing and its intimidating me. I listen to the experienced nurses as they give report and I think to myself what are they talking about. I done well in school but its a different ball game when u r on that floor! Is it common to feel like a dummy when u start working as a new grad!!! Some1 PLEASE HELP!!!
