Trying to decide between 2 jobs. Please point out the pros and cons that I am not thinking about! Current job- School nurse. I have been doing this since August, thought it would be better since I have a baby. It is boring and lonely!! And I do not like working 5 days a week. But it is easy and probably would be good when my baby goes to school. New Job- Pediatric floor nurse. I worked on this same floor previously so I know that I enjoy the work and it would be part time (2 days week). I would make about the same money. But weekends, holidays, and a little more stress. What would you think is better for a mom of a young baby? 2 long days working and 5 days off? Or school type schedule?
  2. Just curious because this is my first year as a school nurse. Is this normally a never ending problem??? I have parents call all the time concerned because their student has lice for the 2nd time this year and want to know what we are doing about this problem. We have a no nit policy (which I do not like). But we send kids home with any nits and they must be rechecked and nit free to come back to school. And it still seems like we always have a lice problem!! Is this normal at an Elementary? Or is there something else we should/shouldn't be doing? Thanks!
  3. I have only been a nurse a few years and I am trying to find my niche! I absolutely love working with kids! I started on a pediatric floor until I had a baby and I just cannot work 12 hour night shifts with my baby. But I loved the hospital work! In august I started working as a school nurse. The hours are much better! Although working 5 days a week stinks! I really do not enjoy the job. I always dreamed of caring for chronically sick children. I am now considering Pediatric home health where I would work with one family and do shifts taking care of a child. I am just worried about jumping into another position and possibly not liking it. I am hoping with home health I could get by working less shifts and have more time for baby! What is your favorite area to work with pediatrics and why?

I have one kid that will take his in inhaler if he is starting to get sick. If he has a cold or something mom will email me asking for him to come take it once a day for like a week. She says this really helps to prevent coughing and asthma attacks which get worse when he is sick.
  5. There is a section in our computer system. Currently we are writing everything on paper AND documenting it in the computer system. Which is a lot of double work! I was just wondering if other schools are going paper free and how they are making that transition.

This is my first year as a school nurse and I am also the head nurse of my district (only 4 schools). The last nurse did everything on paper and then entered into the computer. I am looking at ways to eliminate all this double work! Our school has been using "health cards" which have immunizations, vision/hearing, and all other pertinent health info on it. This creates a lot of extra work! Writing all this info on the health card and then putting it in the computer. I am interested in the way other schools are doing this and organizing student information. If your school is still doing all paper, transitioning to computer, or both? And how? Any information/advice would be helpful!

Has anyone tried using the Pull-n-pack ice bags for ice packs? I normally use ziplock bags, but I go through SO many a day with Elementary kids wanting ice on everything! Was thinking it may be cheaper to go with these. Any reviews?? Do they leak?
  8. I fill up a cooler with ice at the beginning of each day and then make ice packs with ziploc baggies as needed.
  9. Thanks for your help!
  10. Need some help! I am the brand new district RN for a school district in Texas and was given NO information about anything. The previous nurse was here for 30 years. I was recently asked about reporting immunizations to the state. Of course no one knows how the previous nurse did this! Any information about how to report immunizations/when/where would be helpful!
