jamst149, here they don't usually hire new graduates onto high acuity ward until you have at least 1-2 years of experience minimum on a typical med/surg ward. Its just too overwhelming for new graduates I guess

What area of nursing should I get exp in if I want to eventually work in ICU nursing?
Hi! I am a senior nursing student in Canada who needs to submit my preferences for my final preceptorship term. I am hoping to work as an ICU nurse in the future but I am unsure what type of ward would provide me with a good basis. I was thinking about cardiac medicine or surgery? What are some other high acuity type wards? I will also be doing my high acuity/critical care specialty heory courses before my preceptorship begins. Thanks in advance for any advice!

BCIT Nursing January 2015 Applicants
Hey chiseen, I too also did the shortlist questionnaire for last Aug 2014 intake. I didn't realize that I didn't need to do it again so I'm quite glad about that, haha. But yeah, I got conditional acceptance too! I will be also finishing my BSc degree this December too. Can't wait to meet everyone and start the program! I'm already shopping online for a stethoscope haha. And congrats to everyone else who got acceptance and shortlist!

BCIT Nursing January 2015 Applicants
Hey jmcl and lauray, I noticed this too... They got rid of things like "reasons for selecting this program" and "personal strengths" sections. Also got rid of things like extracurriculars and hobbies... This definitely gave me a slight panic attack but I guess that's how it is now. Less for them to read for all the applications? :/

BCIT August 2014 Applicants
Congrats to everyone who got accepted! I was accepted like a month ago except I'm deciding to give up my seat and re-apply for the next intake because something came up. I hope you see you guys around though! :)

BCIT August 2014 Applicants
Hey guys! Just wanted to let you guys know that I tried to see if they would accept a course I took previously that was very similiar to LIBS 7001 however they didn't accept it. They said most people end up having to take LIBS 7001. Rarely ever do they accept any equivalents. I am also taking LIBS 7001 online this summer and haven't started anything, haha! It's good to know others here are taking it too in case we have questions! :)

Hey Cesh, what was the books that you bought for LIBS 7001? On the BCIT website, it says we need to get the course reader but apparently there's another book called Strategies for Critical Writing?

Hey everyone! Congrats to everyone who got accepted and shortlisted! I just came back from my vacation and found out I got accepted too! :)

Yeah, LIBS 7021 is only for nursing students so I was planning to take it in the summer when I'm done my first year of nursing :) I didn't want to take both LIBS 7001 and 7002 just yet because it's a huge investment since the courses are so expensive and I don't know if I will officially be accepted or not! I also just submitted my online questionnaire and it wasn't too bad. I know you had to make each question under 250 words so that was the part that I wasted the most time trying to narrow it down...

Hey @LiquoriceTea, I'm taking LIBS 7001 online too! I'm scared about how much work it will be for an online course. Usually they make you do more work than the in-class one. I wanted to take LIBS 7002 online too but I was wanting to take the health ethics (LIBS 7021) equivalent instead because it seems like it would be more relateable for nursing.

BCIT August 2014 Applicants
Oh wow, lots of posting here since I last checked! I think I'm going to attempt doing the questionnaire this weekend. Or tomorrow. @lnguyen, yes - what was the questionnaire like if I may ask? They said to go study up on those links from the CRNBC but I'm not sure how much of it are we supposed to know? I'm assuming we have to integrate some of the information on the CRNBC website with our questions?

I just submitted my application last night! Can't wait! Good luck to everyone too! :)

BCIT August 2014 Applicants
Hey @Cesh! I'm still working on the additional information portion. Probably going to submit it this weekend. Are you taking LIBS 7001 and 7002 in class or online? This is also my first time applying :) Also, I see that you're commenting on the Jan 2015 Intake thread too. Hopefully I can get in this intake... maybe I can defer it to Jan 2015... but I'm not sure how the deferral system works for this.

Hmmm yeah. I know what you mean. I took some critical reading and writing classes too for uni English requirements and it was hella boring. Kinda bummed that I have to do that stuff again for LIBS 7001. Thanks for giving some light on online LIBS 7002. I was thinking about doing LIBS 7001 and 7002 both online this summer. Since you say it's not that much work, I just might :)

Actually never mind. I found it: LIBS 7021 - Health Ethics. I don't think we can take it anyways even if all the seats were full. It says you can only register if you're already a nursing student. I'm going to ask them about whether we can transfer any health ethics courses for LIBS 7002. I already took a science and health ethics at UBC so hopefully they let that transfer. But I was under the impression that there were no equivalents for the LIBS 7001 and 7002.

@Sparklet15, Good luck! You chose some good schools to apply to! May I ask what the BCIT health ethics code number is? I didn't know you could replace it with LIBS 7002.

So far, I'm only going to apply for BCIT. I missed the deadline for UBC. But I'm going to be doing one of the LIBS courses online this summer. @lnguyen, how are the LIBS courses for you? How's the course load of taking both at the same time? I'm still contemplating whehter I should just take both this summer and get them over with.

Thanks for the clarification, @lnguyen! I was wary about opening up the transcripts because there's stickers on it saying that if I open it then the transcript will be invalid.
-
BCIT August 2014 Applicants
Ooh... I see. Thanks for telling me! Wow, I feel like I need to get my application going. I'm still waiting on my transcripts to come... 3rd time will be the charm! Your application must be great by now! :) May I ask how your guys's applications are like?

BCIT August 2014 Applicants
Yeah, I just wanted to verify about the supporting documents that we need to upload. Is it just a resume, high school transcript, post-secondary transcript? I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing anything!

BCIT August 2014 Applicants
Hey lnguyen! Are you applying for Aug 2014 intake? I am in the process of applying right now but I'm unsure about some things... except I've been trying to call BCIT Nursing Advising this WHOLE week and haven't been successful in getting through to them.. Must be super busy..

Hey everyone, I am currently in the process of applying for this intake. I thought I would go ahead and try to revive this thread since the deadline due for applications is coming up! If anyone is applying or has any comments they'd like to share about their application process, feel free to post!
