  1. I recently graduated with a BSN, but my degree will not be awarded until my minor requirement is complete by August of this year. I did my nursing leadership rotation in a military hospital, and was inspired to join the Navy as a nurse. I am, however, torn of applying to new grad RN position at the hospital I am currently working on and if possible, would like to start my career as a nurse in a civilian hospital for at least 2 to 3 years before joining the Navy. For those who used to be or currently working as a Nurse Corps for the US Navy, I have a couple questions before I make the most crucial decision: 1. Is it a better choice to start my career in a civilian hospital to get my nursing experience prior to joining the Navy as a nurse? If I joined after few years of nursing experience, do I get commissioned/start at O-1 rank (Ensign)? 2. Is it possible to work in both civilian hospital (after few years of full-time/part-time) as a nurse and in the Navy as an active duty Nurse? 3. How long is the officer candidate school once commissioned as a Navy nurse? 4. If in the future that I have started a family when I decided to join the Navy as a nurse, is it possible to request to be stationed close to my family/home while also working in a civilian hospital as part-time or per-diem? I want to be as close as possible to my family while providing the best financial means. Thanks to advance! BVS
  2. I aplied to Sharp New Grad RN residency 3 times and so far no email or call for an interview. I guess I messed up on answering the questionnaires especially the "Why do you want to start your first nursing career at Sharp?" and "How do you define leadership? In what way have you demostrated leadership." Can somebody give me an answer to those questions so that hopefully I get a chance next time? Thanks.
  3. Hello. I am a newly licensed RN, but currently NOT working as an RN. I am currently pursuing my BSN at SDSU and will graduate Fall next year. I was checking the UCLA website for the next the application period, and it didnt say the date. UCLA Health Careers. I emailed the contact person, Sheri Monsein couple weeks ago, but she hasn't replied back. I was wondering if anyone can answer my dreaded questions: 1. Do they consider ADN applicants or ONLY accept BSN/MSN applicants? 2. Am I considered as a new grad RN after finishing my BSN with NO or less than 6 mos of RN experience? 3. What are the other criterias needed to meet? I am currently applying to ALL new grad RN positions here and outside San Diego. It is really tough getting new grad RN jobs now compared to 4 or 5 years ago.
  4. No, I have no idea who will be interviewing me but somebody from La Jolla for sure. I didn't even got a chance to see or meet the manager of La Jolla 7W the last time I worked there. I just have to be prepared and bring out the best of me.
  5. I applied online last monday and I got an email the following day. I applied the "Internal Candidates only" link since I'm a current Scripps employee. There is a separate link for for external candidates during that time frame (closed yesterday).
  6. Hi. I am selected for an interview for the DEU for Oct/Jan start. This is my 2nd time applying for DEU this year as I was not selected last time. Any tips? Can I also ask the following:? a. how many interviewers on the panel consisted of when you were interviewed for DEU? I want to know how many many will be interviewing me so I can prepare a separate portfolios b. what did they ask you during the interview? what are they looking for in candidates applying for DEU? c. do they have like skills test and/or separate class just like the RN residency program? d. are you also following your primary RN or secondary RN's schedule? e. I am currently pursuing my BSN at SDSU. Would they consider placing me with an RN that fits my school schedule? or would they prefer a candidate that has no commitment (e.g. going to school) and just focus on working for DEU? I really want this so bad. Your input and tips would be greatly appreciated.

  8. I also applied for the Oct/Jan DEU for La Jolla 7W and got an interview schedule. This is the 2nd time applying for DEU (I wasn't selected for an interview last May but was selected for the RN residency program). Has anyone got an interview schedule? I'm so nervous at this point. Fingers crossed and hopefully will get it this time.

  10. I graduated with an ADN degree from a known community college here in San Diego, CA. I applied for the new grad RN residency program as an internal candidate, but unfortunately I was not selected for the Fall cohort. For that reason, I decided to pursue my BSN through the RN-BSN bridge program at San Diego State University starting this August 2013 with an expected graduation of May 2015 if everything goes smoothly. In addition to my BSN, I'm planning to get a Psychology minor as I believe working in acute care also deals with patients with medical condition/diagnosis combined with psychiatric/mental illness. I find this challenging yet a great opportunity for learning speaking from my own experience as a former student nurse extern for 1 semester during nursing school and a recent nurse assistant in acute care setting (where I currently work). I thought this would be a good "touch" to my resume and portfolio (I put it as currently working on my BSN with psych minor) as I mentioned it during my interview, but apparently it didnt work (maybe I want to show them something different from other candiates who just have ADN or BSN). I'm also considering signing up for the army reserve nurse corpse program or army active nurse corps program while pursuing my BSN with psychology minor as they offer good incentives. Do you guys think this is a good idea getting Psychology minor with BSN and signing up for the army reserve nurse corpse program or army active nurse corps program will help me land a new grad RN position soon? Any tips, suggestions or feedback is appreciated. Thank you. :)
  11. I only did clinical rotations there (Thornton and Hillcrest). I believe they use EPIC and PCIS.
  12. Hello everyone. I also applied for the UCSD new grad for summer (July start).. I applied for CCU and PCU last May 12 (application period was May 6-12) then later to Telemetry (Last Friday). I called the nurse recruiter office from the number posted in the new grad RN FAQ page and I was told that: if you applied between May 6 to May 12 and the Status is shown as: Application Received, this means that you were NOT selected for an interview, and will be getting an email (rejection) sometime around next week. However if you applied the recent openings (Telemetry, L&D, Perinatal NICU), they are currently reviewing the applications received for this week. Both the PCU and CCU I applied last May 12 shows "Application Received" meaning I was NOT selected for an interview..
  13. Also I want to add that if your currently working, try to cut down your work hours so that you can concentrate on studying. I almost failed in my 1st half of my 1st semester from nursing school because I was working fulltime and the nursing program is a fulltime program! I had no other choice after my 1st exam but to change my work status from fulltime to parttime. The aftereffect was I lost my health benefits. Nowadays having a health insurance is a must... I agree with Meriwhen on answering nursing school test questions.. Its not what you used to from your other college classes. The best way to prepare this is to purchase or borrow ANY current NCLEX-RN review book (Saunders is probably the BEST you can get one out there). Wish I would have done this before.. Try to answer some of the NCLEX-style questions from the CD-ROM or from the book. You will soon realize that the questions were written VERY differently. For each answer, read the RATIONALES for every choice answers. As you progress through the program, do the same thing. Practice NCLEX questions during your break or while studying and READ every single RATIONALE to every answer choices. When answering NCLEX questions (either practice test or from your class exams), focus on the question itself. Ask yourself.. what is the question trying to accomplish? DON'T make it a habit to ask "What if"?... That's a BAD habit that I have to break during my 1st year at nursing school. I always tend to go deep and read too much into the question. Kaplan is a good source for you regarding test-taking strategy, so as Saunders... Regarding textbooks... yup u have to take the reading assignments seriously. Most nursing instructors just give you modules and reading assignments. The nursing instructors and the school give u the tools that u need, but its up to you to utilize those resources. If your school offers tutoring or some sort of help if u get confused to a specific nursing content, such as drug calculations etc, take advantage of it.. Also it would be a GREAT idea to join or create a study group. Depending on your learning style, it could be beneficial to you or just a distraction. I personally believe that joining or forming a study group really helped me with my studies (after my 1st semester of almost failing my Fundamentals and MedSurg1). Most modules and reading assignments tend to have TONS of pages to read.. As you progress through the program you'll discover that you'd be reading a LOT more with so LITTLE time.. My tip? skim the content first and write down any terms that you're having trouble with or unfamiliar with, then look back at your module. If the module includes a study guide, use the study guide. Re-read again and focus on the specifics (e.g. core content of what the module is). I also find it helpful to utilize some nursing textbooks' additional resources (audio and video content related to specific topic or chapter). If the content still confuses you, do some research. Most of my nursing instructors include YouTube videos in my nursing lectures, and most of the time it helps. Hope this helps. Good luck with nursing school!
  14. Is it ok if you can post here or send me a message for the ISBN or the site where you bought the PDA (Prioritization, delegation, Assignment) book? I would really appreciate it. My NCLEX is exactly a month away from now and I REALLY need help coz I'm also not comfortable with SATAs. I'm currently using NCSBN and will be taking Hurst review startng this Monday. I'm also using my Saunders 5th edition, ATI (from my school but I DONT use it for studying this exam coz I TOTALLY hated it!), Delmar cengage NCLEX-RN with CAT logic, Kaplan NCLEX-RN book (the brown one) that came with my previous subscription, and i dont know if its gonna be worth spending another $499 for another Kaplan review as I'm running out of time :/
  15. I'm feeling the same way when I got my rejection email yesterday (this would be my 1st RN interview from Scripps and 2nd overall, with my 1st one from Temecula Valley last month).. I guess not everyone is lucky on their 1st try, but I'm sure that we get better on our next interview/s. Patience is a virtue. We will all get an RN job somewhere.
