  1. I did the pre-health program to upgrade for RPN at Georgian, but I know a lot of people who were got accepted into the BScN program after completing pre-health. I personally tried to do the Independent Learning Centre courses and had a very hard time with them, especially the Chemistry (I had only taken Bio in high school). I liked being in a classroom environment, and having a teacher teaching me instead of trying to figure it out on my own and found that it prepared me for the nursing program. I was also exempted from some communications and Gen Ed's in my RPN program because you do them in pre-health. Hope this helps!
  2. Hi All, Having a hard time deciding which college to go to in Ontario to become an RPN? This link lets you know which schools have received category 1 accreditation from the College of Nurses of Ontario and which ones got category 2 or were not approved. There is also a list of approved RN and NP programs as well. Might make the decision a bit easier! :) http://www.cno.org/en/become-a-nurse/about-registration/approved-nursing-programs/practical-nursing-programs-in-ontario/
  3. My problem is there are so many places I would like to work! I would love post-partum, med/surg (esp. wound care), community nursing, dialysis, the ER....I love that we have so many options, but I am having a hard time narrowing it down! Hopefully doing more clinical rotations will help me sort it out :)
  4. I am in the RPN program right now at Georgian, and I have been told (by my school) I need to get a MIN of 80% average in every class if I even want to be considered for the UOIT bridging program. It is very competitive. One of my friends who has been working as an RPN for 6 years in med/surg has applied 2 times and has not gotten accepted! So my plan is to try and keep my average above 85% if I can so I have a chance to bridge when the time comes. Good Luck :)
  5. I wrote the HOAE a year ago. The test included math (as I can recall I had a lot of money problems, figuring out percentages, conversion questions ex kg to lbs, etc) and there was no calculator allowed. It also had reading comprehension, so you had 2 short stories to read and you had to answer questions on it. There was spelling, grammar. There was visual patterning questions (those were hard! I did not do well on that part!) and the sciences were pretty basic chemistry and biology (but they did throw some strange questions in...one I can remember was what tree looses its leaves first in the fall!) It is pretty basic knowledge, so don't stress too much about it. Just make sure to watch the time and pace yourself. You should do fine!
  6. I live about 40 minutes south of school....I don't know if I would want to travel up from Toronto, especially in the winter...the 400 can be pretty risky
  7. I just stared the RPN program in September 2013 and I love it!! The Barrie campus is awesome. It has a brand new state of the art health and wellness building and the lab facilities are amazing. The teachers are great and Georgian College has one of the highest employment rates for PN in Ontario when they are done school. You won't regret it :)
  8. I am going to Georgian Barrie campus in September for RPN! (only a bit more than a week to go!) I did one semester of pre-health to get my chem, bio, math, and communication classes (I finished high school in 2000 so needed some upgrading). I found this helped a lot and now have some stuff fresh in my mind when I have to do anatomy and math for meds (dreading the math! lol) The HOAE was interesting to say the least...there were some strange questions on it, but also a lot of common knowledge things as well. Must say the pre-health helped with this also. I just registered for my classes yesterday. I am there M-F but on Thursdays and Fridays I only have 1 class each day. ::)
  9. Hello Everyone! I am new here, and if this has been asked before I apologize! I am starting school in Sept for RPN and I was thinking of working for VON or St. Elizabeth, Bayshore, etc instead of going into a hospital. I was just wondering if I could get any feed back from RPNs who are currently working or have worked for one of these organizations. What did you like/not like, what was the pay like, etc. Any help would be much appreciated!! :)
