Is there such programs?
Hello! Just to clarify, UCLA does not have such a program. You need a BSN to apply for the MSN with an advanced practice focus. The MECN or Master's entry level program, are for those who have a bachelor's degree in a different field AND who are not RNs. After the MECN program, you will have your MSN, RN license, and CNL certification, but not an APRN certification.

UCLA NP program Fall 2013
There is some variability, depending on when you take electives, and depending on whether you take classes during the summer, but in general, it's Tuesdays and Wednesdays for your first year, from 8am to 5pm. You start clinicals in your 2nd quarter, and it's 8 hours a week. Not sure about 2nd year, but it seems like you build up to 2-3 days of clinicals per week, with decreasing on-campus time. Hope this helps, good luck!

Need help getting started
Look into direct entry MSN programs. Why work on another bachelor's if you can graduate with a masters. Most CSUs, UCs, and private schools have these type of programs.

Fresh Heart Training
I work in a mixed medical/surgical ICU, but we do a lot of hearts. People usually don't get to take care of them until after being there for at least two years, and then not till after taking a formal class. We are then precepted on six fresh open hearts by our cardio-thoracic nurse educator before being able to take one on our own. Maybe you can ask if they can precept you on at least one or two fresh open hearts? If they are not amenable to that, use your more experienced colleagues as resources. Just try to stay calm and learn as much as you can, you'd feel more confident in no time at all. Good luck!

UCLA NP program Fall 2013
Hi RNBSN7777! I have about 6 years of experience as an RN, all of them in critical care. If I remember correctly, they admit a lot of students from the 5+ range, and the percentage gets smaller with less years of experience, although it is not impossible even if someone only has 0-1 year of experience. If you are able to attend one of the information sessions, I found that they shared a lot of helpful information to help you build a stronger application. Good Luck!

UCLA NP program Fall 2013
Haven't heard anything either after turning in all the stuff. @murse89 - I think I'm gonna take the research class just to have a lighter load for the first quarter. Good luck on the search! I can only imagine how hard it is to find something decent and affordable close to campus! I'm planning on staying in Long Beach where I live, which is about 30 miles from campus. But I know that can easily turn into a two hour drive in LA traffic. I'm just gonna hope to get clinical placements closer to where I live, so I would only have to drive to LA for lectures! I guess we'll see how it goes =)

Is there anybody out there doing well in nursing school?
Getting a good GPA through nursing school is doable! It all comes down to the amount of work you're willing to put in. I went in w a 4.0, and still had a 3.9 after. Good luck! =)
