A round about way into nursing informatics
Food for thought: Nursing Informatics is project based; meaning Nursing Informatics is routinely asked to participate or lead projects for implementing equipment and/or processes that are a component of nursing work flow and interface into the EHR. I'm in Informatics. A Professional Project Management Certification is in demand by hospitals and companies selling & implementing technologies. Also a Nursing Informatics Certification is desirable. Both are less time consuming and less expensive than a MSN. Both have professional prerequisites for obtaining the Certificates. Take a look and see if you could obtain one of those. Don't be put-off by the project management; most local Technical Colleges offer a project management class that you may can take for your resume & project management experience building.

Question for Nurse Managers that hire...
My original BS is in Business Administration. I working while getting my prerequisits. I was able to do an Accelerated BS_RN program in 13 months. It would've taken much longer to do an ADN. Accelerated programs are the best and the worst of getting a nursing degree. The long clinical days, the long class days and the lack of time to do anything but study will take a terrible toll on you. However, you are practically living with your classmates so my group developed a wonderful sense of "team". Not all groups do, but the ONLY way to get through any accelerated program is through support of your classmates. The work is so hard and so much that very few people can do it alone.

Tips for a newbie on dealing with mean doctors?
I work at a teaching hospital too. We always have House Officers on call. These men and women know and expect to get middle of the night pages. The advice given to you in an earlier message is "exactly right" about choosing your calls wisely and having all relevant information. If they yell at you or try to bully you, remember 1. It isn't personal 2. You don't know what they've been doing. He/she may have just dealt with "the worst situation ever..." Also, if you see a coworker being yelled at or berated by a Physician, simply go and stand beside your coworker. If the Physician demands to know what you are doing, simply state, "I'm supporting my co-worker and seeing if I can be of any assistance." The physician will tone it down simply because there is a witness. Best wishes with your first year. It will be difficult but exciting. You will also be amazed at how much you will learn.
