  1. I am very close to completion of my AGACNP program. I'm doing clinicals with a hospitalist group. They have offered me a job after obtaining my license. I'm scared of looking stupid in front of them. I don't want them to think they've hired a complete idiot. But I am having difficulty presenting my admissions to the attending. My preceptor says I say too much and should only include pertinent details. Well I am scared of leaving something out. Is there a template or something to help me with this ? I appreciate any advice.
  2. I live in Mississippi. I am scheduled to graduate from an AGACNP program next month. I have a job offer with a hospitalist group. They have offered a rate of $44.15/hr. Is this the average beginning salary or should I ask for more? Just starting off I really don't want to push my luck. But, I've been a RN for >20 years and my hourly rate is 32/hr. I guess I was hoping for more. Please advise. Thank you.
  3. Hello, I'm in an acute care NP program. I was just wondering what any of might have taken to clinical with you. I have an iPad that I want to take but I need a few other things too. I was thinking about getting either a clipboard that has the storage area or a portfolio, any suggestions? I'll be rounding on the floors with a hospitalist. Thanks!!
  4. I applied for FNP and ACNP when I applied to school. We were told to give two choices. I got into the ACNP program. I just finished my first clinical in an internal medicine office. I loved it so much I didn't want to leave. I have had my share if hospital nursing over the years and really want an office job when I graduate but I'm scared it'll be hard to get because I live in a rural area and I won't be able to see kids. I really don't want 12 hr shifts and holidays. I want to get a job where I can see my family more. Any other NP have this problem?
  5. Thanks. I didn't see the spelling until after I hit send. Lol
  6. Looking for a little advice here. After this semester I have two more in the ACNP program at UAB. Has anyone used the Barley home review? I want something to help during school as well as to study for boards. This program is expensive. I don't mind buying it if it helps. Anyone have any insight? Thanks.
  7. I have done dialysis now for 13 years. I currently work for Fresenius. They have a very extensive orientation program. I've never heard of dialysis school. But, that's what got my attention to this post. I find that they even have such a school very interesting. Once hired in dialysis you will be well trained to do the job by the end of your orientation period. No one will expect you to fly solo for a long time. I was told when I was first hired that you don't even begin to feel like you know anything until after 6 months and don't really feel comfortable until one year. I tell all new employees this because I find it to be very true. The new employees that have the hardest time are those that come in thinking they will know dialysis well in a short period of time. I've seen a lot if people quit after just a few weeks because they get overwhelmed. It's a great job!! It's one where you either love it or hate it. I'm currently in NP school and hope to stay in dialysis working for one of the nephrologists. Good luck on finding a dialysis job. I think the school could be helpful but not necessary. Whatever company that hires you will train you to do things "their way."
  8. I'm scheduled to graduate at the same time, May, 2014. I'm at UAB in the adult acute care- gerontology program. I'm just starting my first clinical this summer. I was planning to start next week but now they're telling me I have to do a class for their EHR. I know I should've thought about this sooner but I thought I was all set. So, now I'm getting nervous that I'm not going to get my 135 hours in. But, I truly do believe that it will pass by fast. I'm so ready to be finished with school and just be able to focus on family, career, and get back into church on a regular basis.
  9. I took it at UAB online. You really can't cheat much because they time the exam. We didn't write any papers in this class.
  10. I stay at the Doubletree
  11. I live in Mississippi. I work 30+ hours/week. I take call so it varies. I have not had any problems so far with clinical placement. You don't start clinical until the last three semesters. I have my first clinical setup to start next month and just sent out an email yesterday regarding fall clinical and got a positive reply before the end of the day. The one for summer had several applicants prior to mine. I was told I was chosen because I am at UAB. In this area UAB is very well respected.
  12. You are going to love the program! I'm finishing my first year there in the ACNP program
  13. Thanks so much. I really appreciate your help. The assignment is to choose a procedure we are learning this semester and describe the pros and cons, the procedure, etc. The part I'm having difficulty with is that we are to explain how we will maintain that skill and how we plan to monitor the QA of performing it. Thanks
  14. Hello everyone. I need some information please. I am in ACNP school and have an assignment to describe how I will maintain my skills adequately after graduation. Also, how will I develop a QA plan for demonstrating my skills level. Is it a requirement to have a QA plan in place? Also how do you keep your skills, such as Central line placement up to date? Thanks in advance for any help. I've searched the Internet and emailed my board if nursing without success in finding answers.
  15. Oh just thought of something. You will have to go to campus 1-2 times a semester once you are in advanced assessment
  16. I'm in my 4th semester of the ANCP program. I have worked 30+ hours/wk throughout the program. I haven't started clinicals yet. I start next semester. You will find your own preceptor and they just tell you how many hours a semester you need. They don't care what shifts you get them in.
  17. Hey all! I'm in an ACNP program. I applied and placed this as my second choice and FNP as my first. I've been out of ICU for 15 years. I'm having difficulty with hemodynamics. Does anyone know where I can get a good review in this area? Our text really doesn't have much. Thanks for any advice.
  18. I haven't started clinicals yet but I would think it's a serious learning experience. If you diagnose wrong it's a chance to learn from it. You'll do great!
  19. Thanks for the encouragement. I have decided to change my attitude. I'm going to make it!! One way or another it can and will be done. I'm praying hard.
  20. I just failed a midterm. The worst part is it wasn't even one of the harder classes. It was Issues in advanced practice. I did ALL the reading, I even skimmed back over everything again before taking it. I've just had so much going on lately. My child has been home sick this whole week with the flu. I just get test anxiety and second guess myself so much. I'm so afraid of flunking out. I have taken so much time away from my family lately. I changed jobs in order to go part time. I have tons of student loans. I've just got to make it. I have another midterm in a week. It's going to be extremely difficult. It's in Adult Acute Care Nursing I. I'm terrified of failing!! I'm praying hard that I pass. I don't want to let everybody down that has been through so much to support me. Well I have case studies to do. Thanks for listening.
  21. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement. I guess we all go through this at some point. Maybe we can all encourage and advise one another. That's why I joined this forum. Have a great day everyone!!
  22. I feel like it is impossible to keep up with all the reading that I have to do. I am so behind and midterm is next week. It doesn't help that my son that is in the second grade is doing poorly in school and needs tons of help in the afternoon. I'm off work right now after having carpal tunnel surgery and still can't catch up. I wonder at times why I did this. It is something I have always wanted. I'm in my fourth semester and have 3 more after this one. Every semester I just pray my way through it. I truly believe God wants me to do this or else I would've already failed by now. I'm in an ACNP program and I have been out of ICU for 15 years. That doesn't make it any easier. I guess I'll pray my way through this semester as well. I just wish I would have done this when I was younger (I'm 45). I guess I was just wondering if there was anyone else out there that feels the same way. Maybe we can help one another and offer support. Well, I look forward to hearing from you other NP students out there.
