opinion needed
If it is the truth, I agree it is a violation of patient rights left and right. However, it sounds like a fabrication of someone who has watched "One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest" and "Girl Interrupted". Most places don't use tie down restraints anymore and giving a medication without physicians approval is grounds for termination of license.

Has this ever happened to you??
I think you work in healthcare and this is going to happen from time to time. We've all had to work a double because of a no show or because someone called in sick, even when I was in school.

Making sure a patient is medically cleared
It's also the standard that the nurses accept the patients from the medical facility then the docs are rehired to meet with them within 24 hrs. We are strictly a psych/addiction clinic so we don't generally take medically unstable patients, however, I have taken orders and felt completely lied to pumpkin the patients arrival.

New Student this fall, I want to do psych!
I completely agree, working as a tech is an invaluable experience and gives you great insight into the world of mental health. I worked as a tech while I was obtaining my LPN and it just confirmed me decision to go into mental health nursing, now I'm staying while I work towards my BSN!! It takes a special breed(as does any field of nursing) just remember that.

Time Limit on Time out for patients
It's my understanding that if a pt goes to their rooms voluntarily and the door is left open the pt can be in their room as long as it takes for them to calm down, if it is made a coping skill you can encourage using it, although I know this will not always work, I feel like it's a therapeutic and safe option
