Let's introduce ourselves...
hello everyone, i graduated with my bsn on may 13 and took my nclex-rn on june 21st and passed with 82 questions. :yelclap: i started orientation on june 3 on ob. our floor does ldrp & gyn surgicals, but for the first 10 weeks i am only caring for mom/baby couplets & gyn patients. then i have to do a 10 week orientation on med/surg then back to my ob floor to learn labor and delivery. i am sooooo excited and feel extremely fortunate to be given such a great opportunity right out of nursing school. the nurses that i am working with on ob are phenomenal! they really try hard to make my time there the best it can be. they are great about letting me do most of the technical skills that need to be done on the floor (iv's, cath, etc). i was very excited to get ot work with them as i had my first child at this hospital last summer and the care i received was top-notch! this forum is a great idea and i am sure it will come in hady over the next year with the huge transition we are all making. thanks, ndsweetheart :)

All You Lefty's Out there....
Lefty here too. The only thing I do with my right hand is golf. I have a heck of a time learning nursing skills as all of my instructors are right handed. This past weekend I was doing clinicals in the ER and the nurses looked at me like I was crazy when I went in to do a foley and they had set my things up and I had to move them all to the other side! I just smiled and said "Lefty!". :)

How many went from new grad to L&D?
Foxfour- I will be going to L&D right after graduation (May 2005). The only thing my hospital does is have us do a 10-week residency program on Med/Surg. According to one of my OB instructors, the literature states that it is no longer necessary for that year of med/surg experience. But they still make us do it. The nurses at my hosital are happy that they are getting about 4 new grads to join their unit. They want to "teach us how they do it". But I too have heard terrible stories from other nurses, particularly med/surg nurses. I am just keeping a positive attitude! I, myself, hate med/surg. I am not excited for my residency, but it is just one more hoop to jump through. I guess, all I can say, is keep looking and you will find the "right" L&D unit for you!

schooling for RN?
Mollie- I totally agree with kmchugh, with an ADN your options may be limited. I am currently pursuing my BSN and will graduate in May 2005. I am happy that I have done it and it has taken a lot of work as well as sacrifice. I am 30 married and have a child and live 25 miles from my college. But, the opportunities that will be available to me in the future are outstanding. I may decide to go on for my MSN or I may be happy with bedside nursing, at least I know that I have the option. So, I would encourage you to pursue your BSN, you are young and have so much to look forward too. College at a 4-year university can be a great experience. You can also opt to get your first 2 years at a community college and attend an actual College of Nursing. This is what I did. My college of nursing is small and intimate in its setting. It only has one program of study, BSN. I find it much easier to be focused on my studies and with the limited class size (40), I find the support for the faculty and other students fantastic. Well, I have done enough preaching, sorry! Hope it helped though.

L&D 1st clinical rotation...help
I am a senior nursing student and did my OB/L&D rotation as a junior. The most important things I can tell you guys is to know your assessments! Also, always use the "Golden Rule" I was pregnant with my first child while in my rotation and I kept in mind how I would want the nurses to treat me when I went into labor. FrumDoula is right on with her post! I remember so much of the nurses behavior from my own labor and birth. Good luck and enjoy yourselves! I thought it was the best rotation. I fact I liked it so much that I have secured a job in LDRP upon my graduation in May. Learn all you can! There are a lot of experieces that you can get in on.
