  1. That would be the logical next step. Thank you.
  2. I definitely understand your point of being unable to set reasonable boundaries and becoming too emotionally invested which does of course concern me. I also do not have any experience other than nursing school rotations in mental health. I do know that I am willing to learn the art of setting boundaries and would like to have the ability to address the symptoms of mental illness many are dealing with.
  3. Thank you PsychGuy for your response. I read your replies to previous threads also and must say you have accomplished what many strive for in the advance nursing practice. I did look into the option of a post masters certification after completing Adult Gero but am concerned if it would be limiting if I decide to do strictly psych as I heard employees favor a more focused initial study in mental health.
  4. Hi Everyone, I am in need of sound advice or personal opinions of anyone who is interested in sharing their experience and choices. I currently have 1.5 years of nursing experience (actively working full time) on the pulmonary/med-surg unit in a teaching hospital (NJ). I am greatly interested in pursuing my Masters in Nursing in order to further my career in this rewarding profession but cannot seem to make a final decision on the path I want to take. I know that I enjoy working with the adult/elderly population and initially thought becoming an Adult Gero NP would be the best option. As I am researching more I realize that Mental Health is also part of my interest list as I have always enjoyed psychology and am very empathetic/sensitive in nature. Of course my priority is being able to make a difference in people's lives but I will not hesitate to say that job outlook/salary is also of importance (and I believe rightfully so). If anyone can share their opinion of why one path would be more beneficial/satisfactory than the other I would greatly appreciate it as I seem to enter myself in a tunnel of what ifs. Thank you.
  5. Name of my dog (yorkie) which means July in turkish
  6. Congrats on the new job! I am also a new grad nurse, 3 months in. With me I always have my stethoscope, 4 color pen, alcohol wipes, scissors, tape, saline flushes (you need them for everything), 2x2 gauze, water bottle, and clipboard. You will figure out exactly what you need and use most as you start working. Good luck!!!
  7. Congrats on passing the NCLEX !!! I feel as though nursing school only gives you the foundation to start your career. Hands on experience you receive during orientation is crucial in adding a little bit of confidence to feel okay about hanging in there 😊 I wish I had more opportunities to practice certain skills during clinicals (foley insertion, hanging blood, blood draws, inserting IVs...) but you do learn as these events take place. I do feel that our program gave us a good knowledge base in assessments, pharmacology, and pathophysiology.
  8. Northern NJ New Grad RN $33.65 base pay, $3 differential, $1.50 extra for weekends Rent depends on the area/city but the norm would be $1100-$1300 for a decent one bedroom apartment in a fairly nice area.
  9. Do not stress too much about it, you took the test, it is over and you will find out soon enough. I took the NCLEX in March and also had all 265 questions. Lots of SATA, EKGs, and more than enough priority questions. My head was spinning after 4.5 hours when I was at the end and I did not know what to feel or think. I passed!!!
  10. -New Jersey -Graduated Dec. 2014, ABSN -NCLEX and license March 2015 -Had 2 interviews and 2 offers in April 2015 from a teaching hospital and rehab institute -Accepted offer from teaching hospital -Started orientation on Pulmonary unit May 11, 2015
  11. I also did a second degree accelerated BSN in 15 months. Anyone with a previous degree can apply if you also have all the prerequisites done. Working full time is probably not feasible but I worked part time throughout the entire program with classes and clinicals during the week and work on weekends. It is definitely doable.
  12. I received my ATT about two months after pinning. Our official graduation date was 3 weeks after that which is when everything is sent out to the BON, so a little over one month after the official graduation date. I did pay a visit to the BON to check on my status, I don't know if that affected anything. I gave myself 3 weeks after the ATT before I took the NCLEX and everything just seemed to flow after that. Good luck.
  13. Hey baileyzt, I actually completed my ABSN at Rutgers (legacy of UMDNJ). I started looking for jobs after I received my license number which was at the end of March. I had two interviews and two offers right after. I only had experience in the dental field (coding/billing, assistant). I am very excited to start my journey as a nurse this Monday 😃
  14. I am also a new grad in NJ, passed NCLEX in March, and am excited to state that I will begin orientation in a well known hospital in 11 days!!! It is definitely possible by being determined and applying to different hospitals. I just kept a daily check on different hospitals' career sites and applied to positions I thought I could possibly be considered for. Good luck in your search.
  15. First day of class today. Pathophysiology, Foundations, and Health Informatics. Lots and lots of information, dove right into the chapters, and lots of reading to do. I am in a 15 month ABSN so it is not a surprise but nerve racking nonetheless.
