  1. To answer the question you asked...yes, there are many jobs you can do with a set schedule. You can work in a doctor's office, do case management, intake for home health or hospice, health department, insurance companies, product reps, and the list can go on. Check job search websites and see what's available, and networking with people as well. I'm a wound/ostomy nurse now and love it! I work Mon-Fri, have holidays off. The possibilities are endless with your RN license!
  2. We all have different personalities, and we do not have the right to say that they need to change theirs to do a job. It's better for the person to change the job, otherwise they will be miserable because they can't be themselves. Not everyone has the ability to detach themselves. I am someone that is very empathetic, and I can't turn that off. I can't become a robot. I do believe for some that nursing is a calling, I have no doubt it was for me. I learned that floor nursing was not for me, so I have been able to find my niche in a specialized area and still be able to care for patients with the compassion that drives me. Do I get frustrated at administration? Of course I do, that's part of most jobs these days. But because I'm in the area I am, it doesn't affect me as often. I love that I care so much. My patients, their families, and even some physicians appreciate that I care so much. I entered nursing to make a positive difference in people's lives during their most vulnerable times....because I had caring nurses that took care of my son, and us, during the most scary and difficult time in my life. I refuse to become an uncaring robot, it's not who I am.
  3. Six figures? No wonder insurance companies keep lowering reimbursements for life-saving care and blaming it solely on corporate America...
  4. The problem with looking at salaries is there will be a wide range of looking at the entire U.S. A nurse here in Georgia will not make nearly the same as a nurse in California due to cost of living. Even a nurse in Augusta, Ga can expect to make less than a nurse in Atlanta, Ga.
  5. Being on the phone, they can't prove who they are unless they know a designated password for that patient.
  6. Couple of things: First....My first colostomy! Find some good smelly stuff, like an essential oil, to put under your nose or on your chest before you go in. Scheduling my last semester was definitely my most challenging. I was able to be with a preceptor for clinical for med-surg that I had to schedule 110 hours with, and we had a preceptor for leadership class we had to fit 40 hours in within a month, as well as 4 classes, projects, journals, and papers. During the month of October my calendar literally had 2 days that I didn't have to be somewhere for school. When I made it through that month....I sighed a big sigh of relief, and then cried (a happy cry) because I had made it. It's going to probably be the hardest thing you've ever done in your life, but as long as you stay strong and keep focused, you'll make it!
