  1. Oh man, have I been there....and I was fired up too! :angryfire I actively went out and found another job without call and quit. I also made it know that I would not take call there either or I would leave. THERE IS A NURSING SHORTAGE, you are right, but treat us with respect, or WE WILL LEAVE! I was working BAYLOR shift and was REQUIRED to take call 3 days a week!!!! (we only got paid $1.00/hr!). We went to administration, the whole nine yards. Now there is only 1 NURSE left in this unit and she is looking for a job as well, everyone else is agency, blew her budget all to heck! It's not worth it sweetie. Get out and get our fast. There ARE other jobs, you won't change the system. We tried for atleast one year before I left. Basically, Directors do what administration tells them too...we even went to the CEO! Oh well, they will just be left with nurses that come and go and won't give the care the patient's deserve. I'm happy now with the baylor job I have...not bothered by a soul during the week and that's the way I like it..Good luck!
  2. wow, laurel. i hate to even hear that we may lose another sister nurse to grant issues, etc. i don't know if yo can, but i borrowed the money for school through the financial aid office. i didn't have a choice and don't regret it. you can also receive money from hospitals! many hospitals will pay for you to go to school as long as you agree to work for them for 2 years afterwards. check with human resources or the education dept where you work. i cannot tell you what to do about religion, or where you get your guidance. i will tell you that god is the only thing that got me through nursing school. i don't know much about scientology, don't really care to know. i just know what god has done for me and know that i won't abandon him as a result. i think that scientology is a fad because of tom cruise and him being so outspoken about it. i don't want to be in a religion or base what i do with my life on a fad. keep your chin up, pray for god's presence in your life. nursing is a calling and if you heard that calling, you probably should answer....best of luck laurel...
  3. I got caller ID. On my days off, the answering machine is off (they used to leave messages on it) and I don't answer calls from the hospital. Screw them, I'm there enough as it is, and I won't be bullied. Isn't there a labor law against this crap?
  4. I DO THIS EVERY WEEKEND BEFORE I WORK NOW (I WORK BAYLOR SHIFT). I KNOW THAT IT IS GOING TO BE FAR WORSE WHEN THERE IS A FULL MOON!!! I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS SUPERSTITUOUS....NO WAY, IT IS TRUE, THINGS ARE CRAZIER! I CHECK TOO!
  5. SO, HOW EXACTLY DO YOU GET A UNION STARTED WITHOUT ENDING UP.... :chair: !!!!!!!!!! WE NEED A VOICE SO BADLY, BUT I UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR NAME IS DIRT IF YOU MENTION IT. NOT ONLY THAT, BUT IS IT LEGAL IN EVERY STATE? DOES EVERY STATE BOARD OF NURSING HAVE A VIEW ABOUT UNIONS? HELP ME OUT GUYS! THANKS
  6. wow. I think every Critical Care nurse has felt this way at least once (if not more) in their careers. I have been in critical care for 12 years now. I took a brief "siesta" and did home health nursing for 2 of those years. I missed it. Once you start in a field that is so intense, you miss it terribly when you leave. My "siesta" ended in Jan of 2000 and I guess I will retire being a critical care nurse. I think with all of my being that it is a calling. It's just all of the political stuff that messes it up. I work in a unit that has no secretary, no pct's, we do everything. The bottom line? I do all of the other stuff last. I love my patients, work hard for them, and all of that other stuff gets done later.... Don't stop doing what you are doing. Just stay focused on the reason you are there and remember, you are special for doing what you do, you truly are....
  7. haven't heard that one, will have to use it!
