Patients need a nurse, not a computer
The cost cutting is definitely affecting the patient number 1, and how we as RN's can appropriately do our jobs. There is a budget on supplies, so we are asked use this or that sparingly when in order for the product to work you need to use it abundantly. The cuts in staff make it almost impossible to get to know your patients to the depth that helps us to read their health status. I do not know what the resolve to this issue will be or will come to in the future? I do know this; however, I am glad I am a nurse if something unfortunate happens to one of my family because I can provide what they need as far as care goes after they are booted from the hospital.

Obnoxious Doctors
Most doctors only become frustrated and obnoxious when they do not a complete set of information when someone brings things to their attention or when they are asking questions to the nurse. I have worked with multiple doctors that had reputations and I had absolutely no issue with them.

Nicotine Test, No smoking policy
I was just wondering what everyone else felt about the no smoking policy that is enforced to work at many healthcare facilities around the US right now. I smoke the vapor nicotine system. It does not incur the health hazards that smoking cigarettes do. For example, no second/third hand smoke, my lungs have been clearing out the tar, my smell is returning to normal, and all the other things that relate to what happens when you quit smoking cigarettes. Now, I called the hospital and asked if they were doing the CO2 and tar test to see if people were smoking, and they said no its just a general nicotine test. Now, many people use nicotine but in ways that do not effect you as smoking does. For example, nicotine patches, gum, vapor systems, and chew. The requirement though states that they are only excluding nurses who smoke cigarettes? Do you think the nicotine excluded is fair because their are other ways to take in nicotine. Also, there are also other health issues caused by many self inflicted health risk factors. What about weight, alcohol intake, or multiple other things that effect our health negatively. I understand excluding people that smoke cigarettes due to the risk that it could cause to the patients with second hand smoke, even though I always see nurses standing off hospital property smoking anyway. How is it justified to exclude nicotine all together?

Do not quote me, but you have the author's so I do not think the agency is nec. The agency would be in the author placement if you could not obtain the author or if the author wasn't presented. Is it an internet site, because that changes the whole citation?

All of these answers here are good. I did extremely well in nursing school, but the first few nursing exams I took I didn't to so well either. Your not alone. 1. Read the question, and make sure you answering the question that is being asked. Key words are important. --any answer that contains a word that is an absolute is ALWAYS wrong because nothing perfect. For example, if the answer says always, never, or any word that tells you an absolute. --look for multiple answers that say the same thing but in different ways, possibly a negative version and a positive version. --don't add information that is not there. -- Airway, breathing, circulation. THE NUMBER 1: The most important thing is find out why you got the questions wrong you got wrong, and find out the rationale of why the right answer was right. Ask the teacher to come in and go over the test and ask why your answer was wrong and why the right answer was right. Feel free to ask me about any questions and I or any of the people here can help you to understand why the answers are what they. If you do not find out why your getting things wrong, which means you are not understanding a concept correctly, you will just continue to get answers wrong. Calm down, check your answers, and find out whats right.

I DON'T GET IT!
The two mottos that the person gave you above, words of great wisdom. Take if from the person who could have used that advice. You have no idea what was going on with the other student, absolutely no clue. If she let you test early and you messed up, you could always say that the test was early yadda yadda yadda. The point is to get it right, doesn't matter what day. Another thing I would say, jumping the gun isn't a good attribute. I was at the top of my class, and even if I knew everything to the T I would continue to practice up to the time I had to do whatever. Getting a blood pressure on target one time would not be enough for me to go early for a test. Different people are harder to hear then other people, and who was controlling the blood pressure meter because I have to go slow for the systolic and I drop fast after that. Your teacher did you a favor.

Help me understand the critical thinking prehire test?
I have a couple questions. I went for an interview at a hospital, a job that I really wanted which makes me overly nervous to begin with. I had to take the normal personality test type thing. Then I had to take the critical thinking test where you read the graphs and the whole 9 yards. I am used to doing well on tests, and I have a high academic achiever. Those critical thinking tests just make me so uneasy? I can never tell if I did well or if I didn't, except one time a recruiter told me I did well on the tests. I feel like the questions take you in circles, and they are meant to trick you and it has nothing to do with nursing. I end up with a lot of unknown answers because I answer the questions without making any assumptions. If the fact isn't provided but the information leads you to conclude something but does not specifically state that this is concrete I do not make the assumption. What is the point of these tests, and tests are usually easy for me. Do they seem to confuse everyone else as much as they are confusing me? I was so nervous after taking the test that I was so uneasy for a simple interview that I do not know if I messed the whole thing up because of how nervous I was acting. I was asked to provide references and its a process, you have to submit email addresses and the person has to get back to the vendor. If I did poorly on the test or the interview, would I be asked to submit the references? Can I contact the recruiter and just ask how I did? She also said that she was interviewing and testing more RN's and that in 2 weeks, which is next tuesday that she would be calling to arrange interviews with nurse managers? ?????

Fired for expressing concerns about patient safety and care!
I have faced the same issue. The place I worked trained me one day and put me on the floor by myself as the only experienced RN on the floor. My ADON had never even been a floor nurse and was a new graduate. I expressed concerns that I did not know where things were, and I did not know enough to work the floor. I asked my ADON for help and she stared and smiled at me, a previous friend of mine. I was told if I wanted more training that I would have to come in for 16+ hour shifts. 8 hours of training and then work my shift. I was finally let go for no reason because even with everything the way it was, I do not play around with peoples lives and there was no good reason to "discharge" me. I felt horrible and I feel like I do not want to be nurse if I am putting a life at risk, thats the opposite of why I wanted to be a nurse. Anyway, I totally understand and I am having a hard time finding another job. I did get unemployment because it was found to be unjust termination, but still it was a termination and I have never done a thing wrong. Sorry for your situation. If you figure it out let me know.
