Hillsborough Community College Fall 2012
I purchased women's medium tops but now feel like they're a little too loose. I think they're really cute, just too loose on me. Cherokee style 4746...Anyway, anyone interested in purchasing, contact me. (2) Scrub tops w/ patches, worn in lab only twice, $20 (1/2 price, basically). Just trying to recoup some of my money. Not sure that we can answer that. I've been told that the hospital assignments, even which participate in clinicals, change each semester. Keep in mind that clinicals are only 1 day a week... Classes and lab may be 2 or more days a week. Good luck!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES... When looking for a volunteer opportunity, you might consider Gulfside Regional Hospice (www.grhospice.org). The have locations in NPR, Hudson and Zhills. They have many different volunteer opportunities, some in their 12 bed care center (their greatest need), talking to patients and assisting with feeding. They also have a need for volunteers on their patient nourishment team where volunteers prepare meals, put trays together, and then serve patients. Ms. Crews has approved this as an option for the PC cohort. They require a 2-day orientation, which might not work for everyone's schedule, but I told my contact that I would at least mention their need for volunteers. I think Hospice is a GREAT program, which has helped several of my family members personally. It can't hurt to suggest the program to others. It might be one that folks hadn't considered.

Has anyone started using the ebooks? I was thinking of getting an Ipad (instead of lugging around those awful heavy books), but I didn't know if they were issues with it not being compatible with the right flash reader. Please let me know if you've been using the ebooks, and if you've had any problems or if they work fine. Thank you!!

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2012
My, how posts have all but stopped since classes started! Guess the majority are using FB now, or are too busy reading!!! Yesterday, I was thinking how this is all so new... By the time we sit for state boards, (hopefully) it'll all be second nature. While reading is important, I would suggest also viewing the video demonstrations Elsevier offers. Watch the nurses performing their tasks... Good luck to all!

My understanding is that we only need our name badges, which are pins, and not our HCC IDs. However, I could be mistaken. Since we're not in the hospitals yet, they will probably have more specifics the first day. Just FYI, I ordered a wine jacket thru Discount Uniforms in Tampa ($17.99). Not sure if its optional or required first day. I've been told that the hospitals feel cool initially, but once we start moving around the floors, we'll probably want to take off the jacket.

Where did you read about this? I haven't seen anything about it from Ms. Crews.... Has anyone else received the same notification?

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2012
Calley, I was informed that I was only eligible to receive Stafford loans -- no pell or grants-- which I was OK with. HCC told me that I would be getting a letter August 10th (apparently, part of the financial aid agreement is that loans must be awarded at least 10 days bf the start of classes... ) It even showed that in my file and the 2 people I spoke w yesterday were confused by the conflicting information?!? I will appeal, and hopefully get something. My CCs can't take all of these initial expenses!! If you are not in the BRH program and have not yet received your letter, I would call ASAP. If you have appealed but haven't been awarded (I know someone on this forum mentioned that he/she appealed), you may be OK, but I would still call. Best of luck to ya. I truly hope you're not experiencing the same thing ...

After weeks of getting the runaround w/ financial aid, I was told TODAY that I exceeded the acceptable number of credit hrs and will need to appeal my award. I am sooooooo upset b/c I've been contacting them regularly and was never told this. I went ahead and did TIPS so my classes don't get dropped. For those who got in the BRH program... my suggestion would be to pay your tuition or a portion of it if you can. I was just so worried that I would get dropped, which would cause more headaches later. Good luck!

Yay! That's awesome news. I've been told I should receive my FA award letter tomorrow ... Glad to hear I have a few more days to pay. Dr. Vs email indicated registration was not open. Just another obstacle. Hang in there! !

Dr. V just sent an email stating that all students have now been assigned to campuses. Congratulations to those who made it into the BRH program, and also to those who have waited SO patiently. I hope that everyone was able to get the cohort they desired.

What specialty are you considering?
Not surprised by the # of folks interested in L&D, pedi/NICU. However, happily surprised to see many others interested in working w/ the elderly! Geriatrics calls to me, although I would also love to specialize in infectious disease. I would like to have an opportunity to work in the ER as an RN (just starting school) and we'll see if that changes my mind.

Yes, sorry. That post was meant for PC nights & w/e. Regarding Bb, I'm pretty sure all currently enrolled students should be able to setup/access their account. However, I'm not sure.... Mine was available from last semester.

Went to Discount Uniforms on Fletcher (Tampa by USF) today. Had a great experience. The guy was so helpful (I think he was the owner). Anyway, I bought a few bottoms and one top, and what he was out of, he suggested I order online and p/u at the store (free shipping). Their website is www.DiscountUniformMall.com. They are open M-F 10:30-6:30, and ON SATURDAY 10-6, which is extremely helpful for those of us working during the week. Please check them out...

Im scared out of my mind for Anatomy
So, I'm reading some of these posts and can't believe what some people did for studying. One person said 35hrs a week?!? Yikes! I worked 40+ hours, and didn't study nearly that much... HOWEVER, everyone is different. Don't stress out over what other people did, because we all learn differently. I also applaud you for asking ahead of time. Unfortunately, you won't know what works for you until you get into it. That being said, I agree with those that suggested studying often. I also used notecards, which were a quick, portable way to jot down notes that I could review at work, or while away from home in general. Repetition for me was key; writing and re-writing helped. I did whatever was "fun" for me, too. Like color-coding sketches, using transparencies to self-quiz, and I also took advantage of the online reviews that came with the book. You'll do fine. I'm not saying it's easy, but I would bet that your work experience will help. You probably know more than you think (I read that in the thread too, not sure by who). Good luck!

talie04, this is my first time applying for fin aid while at hcc (i'm not rich, just a student returning after 15 years!!!). how does fin aid "reimburse" us? i mean, i can put these on my cc for now, but wasn't sure how to pay myself back... and once funds are received, they will go to my onecard which will work as a visa. is that right? can anyone help with answering my financial aid questions? please?!? i was going to call the office tomorrow as well, but figured i would ask students who have first-hand experience -- which i think is more reliable. i thought i was doing ok with getting everything else done, but now i feel like i'm falling behind seeing that some folks are already reading. good for you, btw! i'm sorta jealous. i can't wait to get my hands on that clinical calcs. book... i appreciate anyone who can shed some light on the financial aid process. thanks in advance!

Just found out that I am "immune to everything"(their words!). So, only waiting on financial aid before I buy books and maybe even uniform stuff. Anyone applying for financial aid for fall 2012 gotten theirs yet? Also, I don't understand why Elsevier doesn't offer the same package online. I thought they said during orientation that they would?!?

I know what you mean about the shoes, but I was able to find them for about $70 online, which is comparable to Nikes, but at least you know they'll be white!! Not sure about the stethoscopes.... also had no idea there were so many kinds! Maybe reach out to your professor? I will ask my nurse friends and see what they suggest.

White watch with a second hand, stethoscope, penlight and scissors (as someone else mentioned) also required. I heard lots of good things about Danskos. The "Dove" style is popular. I would suggest searching around USF or in Tampa if you want to try them on (then maybe search if you can find them cheaper online!). We will be wearing them for hours on-end every week (I think they're required for lab as well?), so might as well invest in a comfortable pair!LLet us know what you decide on...:)
