  1. ENP network is a waste of 90 dollars! I NEVER received a single response from any preceptor on their list!
  2. I'm almost finished with the RN to MSN nurse educator route at Aspen. It will be 16 months total for me. They have recently changed their courses from 10 weeks to 8 weeks. So you can probably do it in 18 months or less depending on how many courses you take at a time. I hope that helps. I'm at [email protected] if you have any questions I can help with. Best wishes
  3. Thanks for your input. I will look into it. I'm finishing my MSN in nursing education in September and have been talking to South university regarding their FNP program.
  4. Thanks Mary, I plan to start the FNP program with South University this fall. I'm finishing my MSN in nurse education very soon so some of my courses should transfer thus reducing my overall cost.
  5. Hello Rod. Thanks for the informative post regarding SU. I'm currently in a MSN program with specialty in nursing education. I'm finishing it soon and considering SU for FNP. I see you're finishing soon. If I double up on the courses how long will the program be from start to finish? 12 months? 18 months? Some of my courses from my current MSN program will transfer according to the advisor I spoke with at SU. I'm just trying to get an idea of the overall length of the program. Thanks
  6. I will be graduating from Aspen with my MSN in September. Feel free to contact me anytime with questions. So far my experience with Aspen has been good. The program has not been hard but it is time consuming. I'm single with no kids so I'm able to take a bigger course load than most. Contact me anytime [email protected]
  7. I have been a nurse for over 22 years now. In the last few years or so I find myself having to attend more product and pharmaceutical in services than ever before. Also many more mandatory educational in services. It's always one product replaces another or a different educational company contracting with our hospital. I know this sounds like I'm being paranoid but it looks a little like kick backs could be involved. We even have to come on our off days because some of the in services are so long! The speakers at these in services will always explain why their product is better and why it is replacing the old one we were using. Then I see a posting almost weekly of a new mandatory something we have to do online or class we have to attend. This is always later replaced involving a different company. Never in all my years seen this. Barely have time to see the patient because of this. Also I'm back in school doing my masters. Looks like I'm going to have to go part time to have time for school and all these new mandatory play toys are educators are creating. Anybody else experiencing this??
  8. It's not too bad. Just for future reference you can contact me here for questions or at my NEW email address [email protected] That old email address was giving problems. :)
  9. You're welcome. 3 essays a week per course with one to two discussion post depending on the course. It's not too bad . I find most of my information online quickly for the essays. I just had to learn that APA format. If this old man can do it you can :) I was very anxious at first considering I've been out of school for over 20 years but it's a user friendly website. Also i have academic counselors calling me regularly to check up on me to see if everything is good.
  10. lol yea that means 1500 words. It's usually 3 essays 500 word minimum per essay. I emailed you back. did you get my email? Been having problems with my yahoo account.
  11. It's really not as bad as it sounds. I started the program in June of this year. I have been out of school for over 20 years. It seemed over whelming at first but it's very doable. So far the program is going good for me. I'm currently taking 3 courses. I would recommend starting with one or two courses until you get the feel for the program . Their website is very user friendly . Which helps an old man like me I hope that helps . feel free to contact me anytime with questions [email protected]
  12. I agree with you for the most part. I have worked in areas of Florida where people certainly come from money and nurses are considered servants. I have worked with white people that come from rich, poor , middle class and it's still the same demanding disrespectful treatment. Where I work now in MIami is almost all minorities. On occasion we get a white pt/family transfer from another hospital like Orlando or Palm Beach and they walk in the door complaining. The last white family I received from Orlando reported me for failure to set up their wifi and failure to make hotel arrangements for the family!
  13. You are SO right Maggie! I have done missionary work in many Latin countries and it's simply amazing how respectful they are to nurses. They are also very grateful for every thing we do!
  14. I have been a nurse for over 20 years. I currently work in Miami. The hospital is in an area where we get a lot of Cuban and Haitian patients. I have been at this hospital for 6 years. The patients and families we get are so very respectful of nurses. I know this is a sensitive subject but I'm just stating my experience. I am white myself and receive far less respect from white pts and families like I do minorities. Before working in this area of Miami, I worked in white areas of south Florida like Orlando,Del Rey, Boca Raton and West Palm beach. It was a nightmare working there as the pts and families(mostly white)had Zero respect for the nurses. I took more verbal abuse working in white areas of Florida than when i was in the Army! Why are minorities more respectful of nurses than white people? Overall from my experience white people simply don't respect nurses like minorities!
  15. I'm currently doing the RN to MSN program with Aspen. So far my experience has been good. The instructors have been helpful and my academic counselor calls to check up on me. I'm almost done with the BSN portion. Feel free to contact me any time regarding Aspen. I have not had any computer generated tests yet. So far it's been essays and discussion boards. [email protected] or 786 975 3258
  16. I'm in the RN to MSN with Aspen online. Just finished my first 2 courses. 17 more to go! Any grads from Aspen out there can tell me how jobs are now with their MSN? Thanks:up:
  17. Unfortunately i had the same experience at most Florida hospitals. My worst assignment was Del Ray medical center aka Hell Ray and Death Ray!! The charge nurses were totally useless. I was taking 8 patients on day shift. The charge nurse would sit at the nurses station reading a magazine and flirting with doctors. She would take ZERO patients and do nothing to help!! I started my assignment there with 11 other travelers and only 2 of us finished the contract. Also be advised the clientel of patients and families you deal with in south Florida is the rudest, most demanding , self entitled you will ever deal with. The hospitals are big time in customer service! So you barely have time for nursing care. You need to find out up front the patient ratio for the unit. Ask a lot of questions before taking the assignment.
  18. I did 10 years of travel nursing, most in south Florida. Please be advised South Florida hospitals are notorious for dumping big time on travelers. Best advice i can give you is to SPEAK UP!! At anytime you feel like you are being dumped on while the staff is doing their nails you must SPEAK UP!! Most of my travel career i just keep quiet and took the abuse. Most hopitals will give the travelers more patients than the staff. Also the travelers are given the most difficult patients and difficult families! I wish you the best with your first assignment. Just don't take abuse . Dont stand by quietly as the charge nurse gives you more patients and does nothing to help. I had experiences where i had 8 patients on day shift and the charge nurse was doing nothing but reading a magazine!
  19. The absolute worst area of Florida is the Palm Beach area. Those people are a collection of the rudest, most complaining, demanding pts/families i ever dealt with in my 19 year career. Also as a travel nurse you are given the most difficult pts and families as the staff just kicks back!!
  20. This is sooooooooooo very true!!!! I did 10 years of travel nursing with about90% of my contracts in Florida. The hospitals in Florida abuse the travel nurses BIG TIME!!!! Run like you never run before in your life!! You might get lucky and find one exception but i dont thinks so!! Good luck to ya
  21. Delray Hellray was the single worse travel assignment hospital i have ever worked in my 19 years of nursing!! I simply could not believe in an area full of millionaires i could not get basic supplies for pts. I would wait tables at a restaurant before ever taking a job there again!!
  22. I did 10 years of travel nursing from 1999 to 2009. About 90% in South Florida. From my experience Florida is not the best place to do travel nursing. By far the worse part of Florida was in Palm Beach county. That county had the worse pay, worse pt assignments and by far the worse patient/families i ever encountered!! Please o please do your research. As a travel nurse you will be given the worse assignments and higher ratios than the staff. Any difficult pt or family will be given to you 100% of the time. You are there to make the staff happy! BE CAREFUL
  23. I did a travel assignment there about 4 years ago. I started there with 11 other travel nurses. Only me and one other nurse finished the contract. It was a nightmare!! In 10 years of travel nursing i NEVER canceled a contract but i came very close to doing so at hellray medical center. The patients/families were by far the worse i ever dealt with. I took more verbal abuse there in 3 months than i did the 3 YEARS i was in the Army!!
