  1. I'm in NYC and just attended the NSNA convention in Utah a few weeks ago. I attended an NCLEX review and the woman speaking was explaining that the NCLEX is nation wide - you don't have to take it again. Can you not take the Alabama boards and take the NY boards instead - i think that you can. As far as advice on the fiance.... I have to say that - I moved to NYC to be with my partner (we had a ld relationship for 3 years prior) and to start nursing school. Nursing school is definately more stressful than an LD relationship in my opinion. I also am of the mind set that if you can do a ld realtionship at 22- you will be all the better off for it. Just keep the drama to a minimum, because school is dramatic enough, right? good luck!
  2. Hey there- I'm a nursing student in NYC and will graduate with my RN in December (NCLEX willing). I have to say thatthere are an awful lot of opinions about obtaining the golden NYU degree. Many of my classmates at the community college that I attend think this is the golden egg and all the nurses that I know state that you can get your RN anywhere and do anything you want once you obtain it as long as you are motivated and a good nurse. I was accepted at Hunter College for their BSN program and transferred out to BMCC (many thought this was insane, but I wanted the quick RN and to pay less money). Many people think that a community college is a poor education. Lot's of people think that Columbia and NYU aren't worth the money. Some say that you can't get hired without a BSN and that an RN isn't worth anything anymore. I know that the acceptabel GPA to get into the nursing program at my little community college is a 3.8 - obviously we have some smart nursing students. We are still in a nursing shortage crisis and it isn't going away - so I say, get your degree. If you don't want to be a nutritionist - don't. Once you have your RN you will be able to pay back your loans and there are many ways to get federal loans forgiven etc... If you want to be a nurse you should go for it and figure out a way to raise your GPA. You wo't be happy with yourself if you don't... ya know?
  3. ooops! alos - idealist.org is a great resource!!
  4. I know this is an old post- but i have been researching this as well. a classmate of mine does relief work via the red cross and he leaves the country - it's not just for his state. Also - the red crescent in europe does the same. have you seen the nurses without boarders site? they pay for your food and lodging... good luck.
  5. My sis lives in Montreal and says they're short there too..
  6. "I think you should talk to your nursing advisor. She should be able to answer your questions. Maybe your school has such a class also? Your school must have some way of informing their students on these issues." What nursing advisor?? We don't really have advisors - i mean, technically yes, we do, but in reality - no one advises us on anything... you fill out your paperwork for next semesters classes and someone signs off on it but when you ask for counsel everyone is too busy to talk to you... frustrating. I will see if there is another route. Maybe i'll have to create one... thanks
  7. Hey all - I'm in my 3rd semester for my associates. I feel like I don't get any direction from professors and that most other students are just trying to pass the exams (just like me). I'm wondering where I can get straight forward information on what the next steps are. Like; how much do the boards cost? Where do i find out about taking them? Do any state's boards transfer to other states? Do I have to have ecperience before my first job, like an extern/internship at a hospital for the summer? How long after graduation do GN usually wait to take the boards/get a job?? As you can see... i have some questions... thanks
  8. I just finished my OB rotation. It was amazing. All of the students during the roatation got a lot of hands on experience. Just remember to eat a good breakfast! I was amazed at how exhausted I was from watching a birth.
  9. I've been using homeopathy to treat myself, friends and family for probably ten years. I find that it's a very particular treatment.
  10. Hi all- I have been searching for information on nurse externships ( i am third semester RN bound) but was hoping that someone knew of a site that would be a bit more helpful. I live in NYC but would love to be away for the summer (who wouldn't). Any suggestions, or advice? Anyone who has done an externship or knows of one at their hospital? thanks:nurse: jennifer
