What should I do? Interview after acceptance of another offer
Thank you all for responses. I do have in my hands the contract paperwork between the hospital & I, (2 year GN Internship contract) am set to sign it, drug test, and health screen next week with a start date of July 16, 2012. Ashley PICU RN - I took your advice, called and politely cancelled the interview. They were very gracious about it.

What should I do? Interview after acceptance of another offer
After much hard work, I managed to secure interviews with a hospital and an urgent care center. I have a second interview scheduled with the urgent care center tomorrow, but the hospital called me today and made a much better offer ($5 more per hour, and better benefits) than what I was informed the offer from the center would be. I accepted. What do I do about the urgent care center interview? Should I still go or just call and cancel? I am so at a loss of what to do.

Trying to get out of Correctional Nursing....
Just a heads up from a DFW new grad - many of us are giving up on being L&D/NICU nurses, me included. It was my dream to be a CNM, but the truth is the market here is so saturated that nurses are scrambling for whatever they can get. WIth 3 years experience though, you shold be able to get into Med/Surg easy a lot of hospitals here require ACLS, but some will give you up to 6 months to obtain it - I always say better safe than sorry. Parkland's nurse residency program allows experienced nurses to transition into new care areas, but you will be competing with new grads and we have a TON of nursing schools here, so those are in no short supply. Some places like HCA North Texas have stipend-paid training for L&D if you have a BSN and some experience, but there is no guarantee of a job after that. I think best shot honestly would be JPS, they hire nurses into OB triage with as little as 6 months acute care experience. I'm still unemployed, but am finally getting interviews now that I have passed my boards. Just didn't want you to think the market down here is all hunky-dory or anything. I am considering CN myself. I just applied with the Bureau of Prisons for the Women's facility here in FT. Worth, I figure it's somewhat women's health and maybe one day that experience will get me working towards my CNM. - you are welcome to PM me with any questions, I will try to help as much as I can - breaking into L&D is hard - we have to stick together

Happy to say everything is looking up. Second interview with CareNow on Friday, don't want to commit too soon in case THR offers, any words of wisdom there?

Well everything went well with the interview, with the exception of my phone ending up next to my altoids case and buzzing loudly...twice... I handled it with as much couth as I could, with the interviewer apologizing to me as well for her desk phone buzzing twice. I left feeling great about the interview, and ready to rip off whoever's head that called me knowing I had an interview today. UNTIL I saw the number. Remember my low point? Breaking down on the phone with the recruiter? Well it was her - she wants me in for a panel interview on Tuesday, because they ended up with a Med/Surg residency opening. Not counting my chickens, but it would definitely be the best opportunity I have. It is the largest hospital network in DFW!

I have another interview tomorrow with an urgent care clinic, it is $18.50/hr plus shift diff of +$4.50 after 5pm Mon-Fri and +$7.00 on weekends. I am not so concerned with how much $$ as much as stable and reliable work that will pay the bills. The other advantage is the urgent care clinic will give me the "acute care" experience hospitals in my area are demanding of staff RNs, at least until Residency/Internships applications open up again in September (January start). If I don't get one of those, I may stay on for a year or two to get that mythical "1-2 years of acute care experience"

They pay flat rate. Same for LVN & RN, no negotiation. =( @Tothepointe - I will PM you.

Well, I took the job since I have no money, but this place honestly creeped me out. It's Continuous Care Hospice staffing and it is either home or inpatient, wherever they send me. 12 hour shifts, but no guarantee that there will be work. $20/hr as a contractor (1099) I honestly feel like I am risking my license, but I need to take care of my kids, so I guess a job is a job. I am so sad my career has to start somewhere that feels so shady...

Interview with a hospice/continuous care staffing agency tomorrow. So far the other end of the spectrum from OB (my passion) but it's money and using my education. Wish me luck. Down to the last few dollars in the bank.

How to go from "Homemaker" to RN?
Oh lord the fun things those comments bring up - HAHA, I had a 3.1 GPA, all while being a newly divorced mom with very minimal family support and NO child support (we have 50/50 custody), I literally survived on school loans it was the only way - my house being foreclosed on in the middle of the program....so on so forth a million other hurdles I jumped and sacrifices I made to get here, but I try not to bring that up because then I feel like I am getting a pity job... I am in DFW (TX) and I would prefer L&D or women's health anything, but that doesn't seem to be much of a possibility right now. I will attach my resume and you can tell me what you think - if you can tell me how to attach it =)

How to go from "Homemaker" to RN?
I passed NCLEX June 19 - in 45 minutes & 75 questions...:yeah:My license was posted by the board June 21. I have applications in with Mollen, but have not heard a single word out of them... I can't keep waiting around... I am down to the last 500 in my bank and no income after that....

How to go from "Homemaker" to RN?
Does anyone have any creative ideas to get around the fact that I have been a stay at home mom for 5 years?? I hardly think if my clinical skills are irrelevant as many say, that listing "Homemaker" will help... I have massive holes in my resume because of circumstances, not that I wanted to leave jobs for the most part. I'm also only 25, and I don't feel I should list short term jobs from before I was 18...I spent all of nursing school trying to obtain employment, as I was relegated to being a Single stay at home mom on my first day of nursing school when my husband decided he didn't want me to be anything other than a homemaker. I never managed to find anything other than a temp seasonal gig that I was asked to return to in the next year. Here's my entire work history I will keep it short and sweet with brief descriptions of what I did. March 2012 - May 2012 & March 2011 - May 2011 - Field Service Representative merchandising, reporting, customer service, employee training, negotiations with management for product placement, built displays (Only left due to it's a seasonal only position) August 2007 - Present - "Homemaker" March 2007 - August 2007 - - Field Service Representative merchandising, project execution, shelf edge services, customer service, reporting (Left due to complicated pregnancy, was in school full time and working full time at this point, had to stop work due to Hyperemesis Gravidarum, luckily school was mostly online except for 1 class - this began my unintended "Homemaker" career):icon_roll March 2006 - March 2006 - - Dispatch Assistant Dispatch, scheduling, general office/clerical, process reimbursements, phone tending ( Left because was offered better job that was closer to home & paid more) The rest of this is before/right after I turned 18 and was still honestly quite "teenager" stupid January 2005 - April 2005 Sales Associate @ National Home improvement store sales, stock, daily packdown (was fired due to a "no call, no show" - I was in the hospital. When I showed them proof of my hospitalization, they told me I had never been transitioned to a permanent position and that they did not care where I was, they had no responsibilty to keep me) March 2004 - June 2004 Assistant Lead @ Famous theme park managed and scheduled employees in absence of Lead, completed ride throughput reports, guest service, and attraction operation (At this point in my life I had dropped out of high school after being kicked out of my parent's house and was supporting myself with this job, I quit to go back to school & get my high school diploma) I'm a mess I know. I have had a hard life, but I made it through so far - now I am drowning in debt for my schooling and being told that my clinical experiences in school don't count as experience... HELP please!

Updated Resume - ConCrit please!
blinky I know what you mean, it's is almost as if we just walk off the street and magically obtain an RN license. I feel that our training should count as experience, especially in my case since by the end of my last clinicals I was literally doing all the nursing care with my preceptor standing by and watching. I took every patient she had as my own and it worked almost like a residency does. It's very discouraging to be told that two years of being on the floor actually caring for patients doesn't count. llg - I do not have a stable work history, last non-temporary job was 5 years ago when I had to leave after only 5 months of employment due to a complicated pregnancy, I have actually been told by a recruiter that it looks bad on my resume that I haven't held very many jobs for very long. The longest thing I have is a one year stint at a company with no advancement opportunities - so when I was offered a job with more opportunity I took it, and being 19 at the time I wasn't really considering that I would somehow get pregnant after being diagnosed "infertile" and that I would have a complicated pregnancy that would require me to leave the new job. I was told to come back after I had the baby, but the company went under 1 month before I delivered. Circumstances. I will take the idea to label it Student Clinical Experience however and put my education first.

It was sugested to me in other posts that I make it more clear what I did in clinicals, since that is the absolute bulk of my Nursing experience. So that's what I did

Updated Resume - ConCrit please!
I recently updated my resume after many suggestions from some of you on my last post. I would like to see what you think of the changes I made and openly welcome ConCrit of the resume. I removed my previous employment because it was very honestly irrelevant to nursing and most places have a "previous employment" section on their applications. I try to keep my resume to a one page adventure as well and it was taking up valuable space... I am a new grad and have no healthcare work experience. Please keep coments directed at resume rather than suggestions on where I should gain experience or how I should volunteer, that info is irrelevant to my personal situation at this time. Jamie E. My pet peeves
I need to add one too - people who call me and say "I have a cold. What do you think I should do for it?" then I respond. "Let it run it's course. Lots of clear fluids." They come back with " Well I have some left over *insert erroneous antibiotic*, can't I just take that??" NO dumb dumb!!!

New Grad in the OB
First, congrats on landing a L&D/OB job! That's quite a feat! I have been trying to land one for about 6 months now. I will tell you what I have done just to make myself a more "competitive candidate" - it's kind of a good start and/or foundation. - Join AWHONN and attend meetings, there is nothing like learning from seasoned nurses, and most of them are willing to impart their knowledge on those who seek it - NRP (usually required), ACLS & or PALS (usually one or both of those required to work any Mother/Baby here in DFW) - S.T.A.B.L.E. class if you can find one. It is a phenomenal course in assessing/stabilizing neonates - AWHONN Intro to Fetal Monitoring is an online course that will walk you through the basics and prepare you for FHMCAT (previously Intermediate KRA) I wish you the best of luck!!
