New Grad LDRP - pocket guides & advice?
Congrats on your new position! I started in L&D about a year ago straight out of school. I also had no experience and was so sacred. I read my books from school, researched online, and even posted on this site asking for advise, but really the way I learned was by being on the floor. The best advise I can give you is: be willing to try. If there is an IV to start, start it. If there is a cervix to check, check it! It certainly is within the scope of an OB RN's practice to do cervical exams. Always be willing to ask for help from a senior nurse! I remember someone posting on this site that OB nurses eat their young. In my experience this is so NOT true. The nurses I work with are the most supportive and caring people you could ever meet. As far as reading material or classes to take, I'm sure where you work will be able to point you in the right direction. If they hired you with no experience they are expecting to train you. I would take this time before your job starts and just relax. Trust me! I really wish I would have. Good luck and remember, it takes time to feel comfortable. I still have nights where I feel like I know absolutely nothing and I'm an awful nurse, and other times I feel like I'm great at my job.

The "Q" Word and Other Mysteries
I work on OB and we have drawers with prenatal charts. We DO NOT open the drawers unless we have to. Otherwise, prepare for a busy night!

Night Shift and workouts?
I do Jillian Micheal's workouts when I wake up before work (if I'm not too tired) and on my days off. I like the 30 day Shred and Ripped in 30 workouts because they're only 25-30min and I can do them at home. I really wish we had a 24hr gym in town..but we don't.

The best ways for a new grad to get in L&D???
I was hired on the OB before I graduated. I think being willing to relocate will be your best bet. Search for programs that train new grads (that's how I got my job). Apply everywhere! And bug the HR people. I called a few times before I ended up speaking to someone who was able to help me. Taking those classes will help. I also have my ADN. I've put off going back to school because being on the OB is like being back in school. There is SO MUCH to learn that they don't teach in school. I hope this helps.

New Grad in the OB
Thanks for the advice! I'm living in northern Maine right now but I'm moving back to my home town of Juneau, Alaska. I'm not sure what educational opportunities I'll have but I'll definitely ask around when I get there. I was told that I will be trained in all the units (which I'm completely excited about!).

New Grad in the OB
Yeah 400/year. I'm moving from a town of 7,000 to a town of 30,000. Small populations but still a big difference.

New Grad in the OB
Hello! I recently graduated and landed my dream job in the OB. I'm starting in a few weeks and I'm incredibly nervous. I did an academic presceptorship at a very small hospital that only had around 150 births a year. The hospital where I've been hired has more than 400 births a year. Any advice on how I should prepare myself? What do I absolutely need to know before starting? Thanks!
