  1. Very basically, this is how I explain the 3 main settings we use in our ICU. With other modes, I have to ask our RRT to explain to me every time I come across it. AC--The vent gives set tidal volume on ALL the breaths, even the ones the pt initiates. SIMV--The vent gives set tidal volume on only the set breath rate. Spontaneous is, well, spontaneous--the pt does most of the work (I only say most, because generally they're on pressure support/PEEP as well. Correct me if I'm wrong. And obviously, this is just the most basic way to remember.
  2. I work in a 16 bed SICU. We have quite a few swans, a few IABP's, but not ECMO or CRRT. Our ratio is 2:1 except: ~newly admitted DKAs (not all the time, but they're trying to make it a rule) ~Fresh open hearts (until extubation) ~IABP ~or REALLY sick pts (but only if staffing allows) In the 16 months I've worked here, I've only had to take 3 patients maybe 2 days--no fun. If that was the norm, I wouldn't be here. 4:1?.....You couldn't pay me enough--that was the ratio on the cardiac stepdown I worked prior and I ran my legs off then with lower acuity pts.
  3. The only thing I wear jewelry wise to work is my wedding ring (and if it was a big blingy rock, I wouldn't even wear that--punches through gloves). When you have to worry about your watch/bracelet/jewelry while you're trying to do patient care, there's a problem. And I'd prefer not to get any "goodies" on my jewelry--and it's bound to happen someday. :)
  4. Thanks flyingfish! I'm interviewing also on the 13th, so maybe we'll see each other in the lobby. I wish you the very best of luck and wishes! We'll all need it. :)
  5. I applied this year and just found out a few days ago that I got an interview! I was floored--shaking and everything! lol And now I'm more nervous than ever. . . Interview tips from anyone who's been there before??
  6. I was at work on Tuesday and had joint commission follow me up from lab and do their check while I hung blood. Now I got a call from HR asking me to bring in my diploma because joint commission wanted to see it. Has this happened to anyone? Should I be worried?
  7. UAB posts their wages. I believe it starts at 20.10/hr. Not sure about the others. I work in Gadsden and make $18.10.
