Air Force/Army FNP or NPs: Questions/Advice/Encouragement!
Hello! For those of you currently in the greatest Air Force in the World, first off I would like to say thank you for your help, service, and sacrifices... My name is Greg and I am a Family Nurse Practitioner Student with roughly 9 months of primary care nursing experience. I attended my college and graduate programs in Boston. I have no military background. I would just like to get an overview about the process of applying into the AF: from meeting the recruiter to COT training and how it has shaped your leadership skills in your respective disciplines. I understand that the process can last up to a year; however, I am planning on practicing as a civilian FNP for roughly 2 more years after I graduate in May of 2015. I have to give back 2 years of service as an FNP because my HRSA scholarship program requires me to do so... Along with the question regarding you leadership skills... 1. When do you think I should contact a recruiter and develop a plan for application? 2. For any AF FNPs out there... how is life on the base? How many years of service will you have to give back? ..and where have you been deployed to? 3. Is the COT really how it is made out to be? Or are there "curveballs" that made you have second thoughts about joining in the first place? Any advice, pointers, encouragement would be great! Thanks for your time,... and once again, thank you. - G

FNP Resources
Out of curiosity, I was wondering where everyone acquires updated, clinical and/or political information for Family Nurse Practitioners. Is there is a specific "app" or Journal subscription you have found consistently reliable? It seems like guidelines, clinical/political regulations, and scopes of practice change on a daily basis, and I would like a reliable source(s) to refer to so that I can stay consistently updated. Thanks! G

Nurse Corp Scholarship Finalist
chessi89 Yeah it really does seem like a long time. I believe they give you a lump sum of when your program year actually started and there is an ORC form to fill out for your school to check out to determine what constitutes reasonable payments. Facebook group is up all!!! Got it set up tonight! You can find it by searching "Nurse Corps/ HRSA Scholarship Recipients" or following this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/160281747505698/

Nurse Corp Scholarship Finalist
Hello all! Once again congrats on getting the scholarship! My Name's Greg and I would be more than willing to start this facebook group to establish continuity for information gathering, questions, and concerns. The group would be named "Nurse Corp Scholarship Participants FY2013." It is required that I have at least one facebook friend to add to get this group started. The issue is that I do not have any fb friends who are recipients of the Nurse Corp Scholarship Award! So we have a bit of a conundrum there. If one of you would be willing to add me as a friend under "Gregory Marcellin" I could as you as a friend, then get the group started and add everyone else! I really would like to see the continuity of this program in order for us to advocate not only for ourselves, but ultimately for those in underserved communities. In the meanwhile, have a great Sunday!

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
From de 2013 to BostonFNP, I see! Congrats with how far you have made it thus far! Like what you mentioned, this past year and a half have been much work, but I am grateful with the experiences I have had and glad that I have most of my pre-RN material under my belt. Taking the boards in January! How has things been with you post-NP school? Have you found a job suitable to what you wanted to focus on? Hope things are great post-NP school! Hard work pays off! Greg

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
shane, the system will not let me send a private message! no concerns just all out of curiosity! just seeing if stresses can compromise the work ethic involved during this track. i don't want to see myself falling back because of stress. i also wanted to see if there was even "slackers" in such an intensive grad program. now finishing college, i have noticed that it is "hard to fail" and yet "hard to get an a" if you put in the work ethic involved especially with schools known for grade deflation. personally, (if i may ask) do you find it "hard to fail" and "hard to an an a" in class? are there times where you put in so much work and ending up getting a disappointing grade? it has happened to me just a few times in college, and i was wondering if this is typical in this grad program. thanks so much! greg

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
Hello de2013! I have one question regarding any cases where you have seen people drop out of the direct entry program. Is there a huge percentage of people who decide to leave because of certain personal reasons or the "overwhelming academics"? Would you know of the percentage of the people in your cohort who decided to leave the program? Thanks for your time, Greg

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
Thanks for all this man! Such a great help! I am feeling really good about this program. The environment seems very welcoming and positive. I promise this will be my last set of questions for a while!! If you remember, how was the fundamentals in nursing class in the summer? Was it challenging/nerve-wracking as the first nursing class? How do students usually do in this class? Also, what were some your highs and lows of the NP program? What were your hardest classes/clinical experiences during your time in the program? As a male in the program, did you feel as if you were treated different as the minority? Greg

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
Thanks so much for the snapshot, de2013! Can you share how the workload is? Does it seem manageable/doable without going crazy and having a social life/support? Sometimes there are cases (I'm sure many people feel this way) where students do not feel smart enough with particular academic/clinical challenges. I love challenges but when it comes to a milestone of this magnitude, sometimes it takes a little encouragement to stay confident. Is the faculty availability apparent, or do you have to "hunt them down" for a particular topic? Also, are they reassuring in helping the students get through the hardships that nursing school brings? Thanks so much again for your feedback! It is a great help! Greg

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
So glad to hear that it isn't too awkward! Would you be able to give me an example of what a class schedule for a first year would look like? If not, then it's ok!

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
Thanks so much for your two cents de2013! Regis college offers the BSN at the midpoint of their program. I hear the the Simmons students seem more prepared in the clinical setting than all of the other schools. How is the atmosphere at Simmons? I hear that the facilities are state of the art compared to Regis and that the faculty there is superb. Is this true? Regis has gotten a bad rap about their program and how much the students regret going. You can tell me the truth about Simmons because I have only heard good things about the program there! (And many bad things about Regis and their resources). How stressful is the workload and clinicals at Simmons? Is being one of the few male students a challenge with making friends/colleagues? My school history has consisted of an all boys high school (Malden Catholic) to Boston University and probably to the all girls setting at Simmons...!!!

Simmons College vs Regis College Nurse Practitioner Program- BSN vs. no BSN
Hello all! I am contemplating between Regis and Simmons college for their respective NP programs. Both have their pros and cons and what is really worrying me is the fact that Simmons does not offter the BSN after completing that part of the curriculum (however Simmons is right in the city, very convenient, and with great resources); whereas Regis offers the BSN and more flexibility in their program (however Regis has had bad reviews regarding their faculty and the resources they have in the school). I'm hearing various comments about how complicated it may be to get an NP job without a BSN. Is this true? Would I be able to find an RN job during the NP portion of my studies without a BSN? Is there anyone that is a current Simmons nursing student that has seen a fellow peer get a job in the city working as an RN without a BSN? Anyone see an "X-factor" between the two programs that would make me choose Simmons over Regis (or vice versa)? I'm still very indecisive on both of these programs but the main issue is that I am worrying about is the BSN predicament for furture nursing endeavors. I would greatly appreciate the help with this decision!! You can email me at [email protected] or leave a comment! gregm890
