I work in what is considered an "English" hospital but most of the patients are francophone so you will need to be able to speak some french and understand a whole lot more. If you are not yet employed I think the best use of your time is to get a tutor for the french exam because it is not the easiest exam. Apply to as many "English" hospitals as you can and keep your fingers crossed! good luck to you

Hello, I apologize for the late response. If you are already a licensed nurse in Canada all you need to do is register in the province of Quebec. I had to also take the french exam to be fully licensed because I did not study in french but if you are already licensed in another province you may not have to. Contact the licensing board and they will give you more information. Good luck to you

I am just reading your post and it is 2014! I work in Montreal and I am anglophone, and even though my floor is busy, for the most part, about 95% of the time, we are able to take all of our breaks (15 mins morning break, an hour lunch, 45 mins supper for a 12 hour shift). When it gets too busy the head nurse and assistant head nurse help out on the floor. I have NEVER had to come in earlier to catch up on work. I have worked for almost 3 years and have only had to stay 30 mins later than I was suppose to about twice. I think you need to move to another floor if you have not already

Hello, it really doesnt matter what we say, if you want to go to nursing school, go to nursing school, keep in mind that you will be working very closely with people and personalities will clash just like everywhere else, however, I will respond to your questions Has your opinion of people changed at all, do you still have faith in humanity so to speak after dealing with so many types of people? I think I had to work on my faith in God after I started nursing, I experienced the "nurses eat their young" syndrome. It was a depressing time, but sometimes you go through things to find out how strong you really are. Do you still maintain your compassion for others? Yes, I still do Do you get depressed at all from the circumstances? Sometimes I get depressed from the sudden deaths, I work in a CCU so we get a lot of MIs on the floor Why do you keep going back? I will be 2 years in nursing in October of this year, for now I keep going back for the experience, and of course the money, how long will I stay as a floor nurse? I have no idea but I know it wont be too long cos my back is already telling me its close to time to get out. I wish you luck

Where I work, ICU, CCU and ER nurses get a higher starting salary than everyone else, also a nurse with a BSN gets a higher starting salary than a nurse with a diploma, and a nurse with an MSN gets a higher starting salary than the previous 2, regardless of experience. A lot of people dont like this and the argument is always that, nurses working on the same floor do the same thing so why the pay difference if not based on experience? We also have a direct entry masters program here, for people interested in going into nursing with a bachelors degree in another field. When they graduate, they have a higher starting salary even though they have no experience

Thank you for this article! I had this discussion with friends of mine and no one believed me when I said new nursing graduates could not find work. I am lucky I got a job right out of school but some of my classmates have not been able to get RN jobs. I am glad this is out in the open, thank you!

One of my friends who works in Moosonee told me she will be coming over your area May or June for work, I know she knows quite a few nurses there already, her name is Sacha, just in case you get to meet her. It seems like people who work there really like it which is encouraging. I havent applied yet or anything but I am hoping all goes well when I decide to, thanks so much for the information

Congratulations!!! I dont know how I missed your response for this long. One of my classmates was actually in Attawapiskat but had to leave due to licensing issues, She loved it there, and hopes to return when things settle. I will be visiting Moosonee in a few weeks just to check it out, I do want to work in a northern community, just not sure which one but I do know I need to brush up on the general health issues involved with these communities. Hello Trishrpn80, did you get the job with WAHA? I have a friend who works at moosonee and she is always so excited about being there. If you got the job, how is it going for you so far?
