Day was going well...I was keeping up with documentation and then the unexpected happened as often does in L & D.....suffice to say my patient progressed quicker thn expected and her doctor told me to have the 24HR doctor cover the delivery. the case was not simple (microcephaly) and I therefore called the 24HR doctor to let him know about the patient.. . (why the doctors cant communicate with each-other is a whole other issue) he subsequently asked me questions that I did not have answers to at the tip of my tongue and got annoyed and asked for the charge nurse...all this I can handle and yes I should have had ready answers ( he decided at 8-9 cm dilated to ask for testing that wasn't ordered by the previous doctor and that we had to call the lab to find out how to do...) etc but what is bothering me a day later is the words of the charge nurse to me when I asked her if everything was ok...she basically said " how can I say this the right way...your basically a new nurse and this isnt really a place for a new nurse" -in front of another nurse. Despite the fact that earlier in the day she said to me "Im really proud of you for sticking it out here". How can I gain more confidence in my dealings with older and abrupt and rude doctors? How can I gain the support of senior nurses like the one above? How do I ask a senior nurse to double check a patient before I call the doctor without them thinking I am a moron. all the nurses have a lot more experience thn I do. I feel like a failure today

Ruby- Wow! I so appreciate hearing that you too cried in the bathroom since I have been feeling like I am loosing it at times....Also I have never heard the term "slow learner" used in a neutral context... I think I am a slow learner too! And I am worried about this...I recently got off orientation and I am full of the anxiety you describe. How did your fellow nurses and manager deal with you being a "slow learner"? I am worried my need to have VE exams double checked by a senior nurse before calling a doctor or my inability to work as fast as others at this early point in the job will lead to others not wanting to assist me, think I should be fired and bully- I recently had a doctor say to me after a delivery and in front of a patient that he did not think the delivery went smoothly and that it better be different next time and blamed the use of a vacuum on "nurse inability to find the FHR". I know I am not as quick as a 5+ veteran nurse but I can get there with time and support or maybe I should look elsewhere too?

I recently came off of a very long orientation process for L&D and I still don't feel like it was not long enough or rather the time didn't prepare me in the needed ways to be on my own...I wish I felt like it was a team sport- but I feel like I am looked down upon for asking for help. I don't know if it is in my head or if the senior nurses are giving me a bit of a hazing...How does a new nurse ask for help from a staff that has 10+ years of experience without seeming like a burden?

Our hospital just got 4 novii wireless monitors however we have many more laboring rooms...how does your workplace ensure the pods dont get lost?

How do I start a second primary line-- for instance my primary is LR and now I need to start pitocen at the port closest to the vein without creating air in my lines- which lines need to be clamped if any?? do I fold over one of the lines while attaching??

have you had a mormon patient? how did you know he or she was mormon? what was it like? I am writing a paper on end of life practices of mormon culture but have never knowingly had a morman patient.

I have a student who is suspected to be using marijuana on a regular basis ( we cant test him) he is also incredibly non compliant with his diabetic regiment -does not come to the office to check his BS etc. The psychologist here is very concerned about the interaction btw his marijuana use and his diabetes- the studies I see say it can cause the "munchies" and that it decrease waist circumference etc what educational tools do you use for those suspected of using marijuana and have diabetes? what are the risks??

Hello, I am looking for tools to help encourage a female teenager who is in a lifeskills program and the behavior of a 4 year old in toileting hygiene- ideas? Also do you know if by law her aid can give her verbal assistance or does this have to be done by the nurse.
