  1. I find being able to act like a child at times helps them relax and helps them become more comfortable with you. I personally am proud to act like a big child 90% of the time even when I'm not at work. But seeing as how you seem to like anime (awesome to see another anime lover BTW), it's a cartoon. Kids love cartoons!! One of the facilities I worked in about 10 years ago I introduced anime to one of the girls (patient) there and she loved it! Saturday nights we'd watch Teen Titans together (not that it's anime, but it was good) and it was 'our' thing. But a lot of people I worked with treated her like she was 2 and she was a teenager. I treated her like you're suppose to treat a teenager and she appreciated me for it. She liked being babied sometimes, but I didn't put up with it. Kids need to know, within reason, who the one in charge is. Believe it or not they respond to you putting your foot down. May not always like it, but the kids I took care of grew to love me really quickly, because I didn't take any crap or attitude, but I got down to their level to watch tv or play video games, or do crafts. They want a friend most of all when they're sick, someone they can talk to who they hope will do everything in their power to get them better if possible. Just find a way to have fun with it. If you're having fun, they'll have fun too. Good Luck!
  2. I love my tympanic! Easy, non-invasive, and I've tested it against a rectal temp on the same patient at the same time and it was within .1 degree. The only time I've ever had wacky readings and it's obviously off is when the battery needs changed. In an emergency I'd probably go with a rectal, but overall, I've had no issues with my temporal one and I've had it for over 5 years now. Honestly I've been doing peds for almost 14 years now and the last thing I want to do to a small child or infant who's sick and sleeping is start throwing them around a bed to ram a foreign object up their rears. Most parents I've dealt with are happy with is as well.
  3. I do home care for a little girl whose mother is one of the higher up in the pharmaceutical dept of a major company. Her daughter has a Mic-Key button and she had been getting the solutabs, but now we're getting the capsules, which we hate, but the pharmacy is having a hard time getting the solutabs right now. Being that the mom works and makes these drugs, the nurses ran it by her to make sure she was ok with it. But while they tell you not to crush the little balls cause it destroys the med. It won't destroy it right away, so we dump the balls, crush it, put it in warm water and give it right away so it's in her stomach in less than a minute or two. She's been fine with it and she's one who use to throw up a lot. She's also on a fluid restriction so we have to watch which nurse is using how much water for their shift. Some nurses are greedy!!
  4. There's a book called 'Dealing With People You Can't Stand' that may help. Off the top of my head I can't remember the author, but it could work for you if you find it on Amazon or something. Good Luck!
  5. Are you only applying at hospitals? I know a lot of places want at least a year of experience around my area (PA). Currently I work for an agency which, as a new grad, you may not want to do just yet, but I needed another job on top of this one and I applied to nearly 15 places and only one got back to me and it wasn't my ideal job. I've worked in peds for almost 14 years now and this new job was assisted living. But I figured, it's money, I can at least try it. I've been there for 8 months now and I really enjoy it there. If you've only been trying for hospitals, try other places for a while. Get your foot in the door, you might like where you end up even it's if not what you wanted originally. Good Luck!
