It is but they felt that patient safety and the unit where in jeopardy from the risk I would have a seizure. I have epilepsy which has been well controlled for almost 2 years with medication and my Neurologist. I mentioned it to the nurse educator as to why I decided to take the job in Neuro over NICU. Yes this was a Neuro /Ortho unit. The next thing I know I am in my directors office saying that she is worried about my health (yea right) and scheduled a meeting with HR. Instead of transferring me to another unit they let me go. I am seeing an attorney today.

and I was let go...time to do some soul searching...then some job searching... PSU she is in the process of getting her RN...

Something I hadn't planned on. I have a disability and said something to a charge nurse and today all of a sudden it is nothing working out. Meeting with admin to see if I can stay.

Let me clarify. Of course I am not saying that anyone needs to hover over me. Each time just meant for each check off skill I have to be observed doing it. When I cannot get someone to watch me check off then that is my problem. Then the check off has to be the way it wanted in the facility which I can understand. However, if one does it one way and the other does it another, see where I am going? The computer system is part of the check off, skills yes I learned those and can modify to the way they do them, but the computer software, did not get taught that in school. I ask questions all the time, but when the answer is just do it where do you see a problem.

Not sure where to post this but hopefully it is the right place. I just got hired on a Ortho/Neuro unit. The job is not that bad, the preceptors are. I have 4 total and each one has a way of doing things, which now I am lost. One LVN does not bother to show me much because she wants to get out at 730 no later so she can concentrate on her RN so I am lost with the computer programs. She also tells me to push meds and then leaves the room. Really on my first day? Yes I know how to but I didn't work for nearly 5 years to get my RN license to have someone not want to stay with me and walk me through each time. Especially on day one! I am meeting with my unit director and I just cannot learn this way. Am I wrong to feel like I am being thrown to the wolves?

I had the basics on mine, no luck. I added what I did specifically that went above and beyond or targeted an area that I worked I got 6 interviews in 2 days.Even interest from hospitals in DFW which is hard to get. If you can afford to have a resume writer do it, it helps tremendously!

@fafine I applied with an acute care at 1320. At 1700 I had a call back from the NICU director wanting me to come in for an interview. I would go ahead and apply if you are an RN. A friend of mine applied at the county hospital after getting her lvn in fl and was hired. If in doubt call and talk to the recruiters here and see what they suggest!

Contact the community instructor at UTEP. She does a lot of research with this population since we are right on the border. Just got to The University of Texas at El Paso Home look under search faculty and staff icon to the side of the page and search. Send her an email.

I went back to my university career center to get some help and part of my problem was the resume. I revamped it here and applied at 130 PM to a NICU. At 445 I had a call from the unit director wanting an interview. :)

Why not just do like we did before the use of online applications. If there is one in particular you want, just go in person. I thought about that prior to staying here. I wanted to work for Parkland and have read it takes forever for them to get back to you. I know at the county hospital here in El Paso they used to have Walk in Wednesdays where if you were a licenced RN you would come in and be interviewed on the spot. I think that if you went to some of these places with your documents in town and talked to the recruiter in person you might have a better shot. I know being 44 and a new nurse, chances are the recruiters are closer to my age and that would hold more weight in my eyes if I were in their position. Just another option.

Sorry El Paso. I had planned to go to Dallas but the competition for jobs without experience even for a BSN is ridiculous. They hire ADN here. Instead I am staying in El Paso and getting my experience. All the hospitals here will hire including the new Children's hospital. Ft Bliss is also building a new hospital and the current one will be a dedicated VA clinic. Hopefully by doing this I can avoid the "competition" and just transfer to Dallas.

I actually was trying to move from my current location to Dallas but getting into a program there seemed impossible so I decided to stay in El Paso. Most everyone who has graduated and passed the NCLEX is either working or has been hired to start at the hospitals here. I decided rather than risk the chance of losing the opportunity to begin work for something that is a maybe there, I would go to work and get my experience here. I have a BSN but know people that have ADN's finding jobs here no problem. They just built another children's hospital that just opened and is need of people and then they are building another hospital for Ft Bliss to replace WBAMC. That will become a VA clinic, the entire hospital now. We are getting 14000 troops and their families in so it might be something to look at if you want to relocate.

I thought the same but since my best friend got her ADN I figured there would not be the job market would be open. I went back to school in 2003 and got got done with my basics in a year and a half. Then I waited for 3 semesters to get into the program. 800 applicants for 40 slots. During the time I was waiting I talked to friends that were in administrative positions CNOs and was told that the future was going to be the BSN. So I began to to work on my other courses required. I got in within 4 times of applying. That was in 2008 and had to take a year off because of my health, the death of my brother, a divorce and other reasons. I just graduated in Dec and took my boards Feb 6th and passed. I had wanted to move to Dallas to be with my son as he went to college but am running into problems with the new grad being 44 and having no experience as an RN. Right now I have applied with every hospital, nursing home and rehab, even talked to headhunters and nothing. Yet those same hospitals here I could use those same friends to get me right in. What I am saying is really talk to those hospitals in your area now or where you want to go and see if an ADN will be enough to get you where you want to be. Hope this helps.

Hello, I have been applying everywhere in Dallas including Baylor, Parkland, Doctor's, Denton, Methodist, Cooks, even UBH even looked at talking to headhunters. Still nothing. Yes I know it is hard in this area to find a job without experience but could the fact that I have not relocated there yet have anything to do with it? My son is in school in El Paso and won't transfer to Dallas until the summer. I do not want to take anything here because I feel it isn't fair to be trained knowing that I am going to moving there when he goes. I am a single parent and cannot afford to run 2 households. Can anyone give me advice about taking a job in one city for a few months is even a wise idea just to get some experience. Thank you
