CUNY LEHMAN - Accelerated Program Questions
I'm happy to hear that and CONGRATS !! How was the admissions process? Do you think it's as grueling as other schools? Were you a student at Lehman while you were applying? I ask this last question because I understand that accerlerated applicants have to take the pre-nursing exam. But I'm not a student at Lehman yet and was told that I couldn't take the exam.

I'm not asking anyone to lie or contribute to a fight but...
......And do you mind if I ask why you did not graduate in nursing? Were they just distractions? Best of luck to you either way :)! And just to add, my boyfriend is husband material (and has a much better understanding of independent living than I do; he's been on his own since his teens), but there's no rush to get married or anything. He's insanely supportive; he makes doctor and hospital visits awkward because he always wants me to connect with every single person on staff he faintly knows! I never fully pursued nursing at Hunter due to lack of belief in myself and social distractions. After my junior year I just wanted to get out....be it whatever major and psych. was the easiest. Students back then, and maybe still now, discouraged each other from applying. They went around saying that the nursing program was too competitive, the dept. receives a lot of applications, you need a 3.9 gpa to get in and yada yada. So all of this resulted in me not believing in myself. See, that's where the real problem is. I let people decide my life for me and thus five years later I look back and regret it everyday. Now I'm married with a child and feel that I let them down by not having a more stable career. Anyway, I believe that things will get better and so I will stay positive. I'm happy that your boyfriend does these things for you. Believe me, networking is as important as your degree.

Plan to move to NYC with family - need advice
1) expenses including..rent/mortage (apartments 2 beds start around $1200 for a decent size do not expect anything large)...car insurance (i have two vehicles and pay 160..just liability)...childcare for the 1 yr old (average $110 -$150 per week but can be more depending on where the daycare is)....metrocard (if you prefer to commute to work..single ride is 2.50...week unlimited is $29..check www.mta.info for more prices)....do you want cable t.v, internet and a house phone...lol sounds funny... 2) private of public school??? 3) Yes, but will be costly. NYC.gov can refer you to a site that lists providers who are licensed to cover after hours. I have a 23 month old and for after hours I use family friends and relatives. So if you do move here make friends quickly. 4) this I cant answer but the first two post seem reasonably correct.

Any incredible volunteer opportunities in NYC?
I only know about hospital volunteering and not outside. I actually volunteer at a Brooklyn Hospital in the Labor and Delivery unit and I absolutely loveeeeeeeeeeeeee it!! I fortunately met nurses who want to teach you things and not just boss you around. I chose labor and delivery because I knew it wouldn't be as hectic as the emergency room and its the health area I am interested in. If you want to volunteer in NYC make sure you sign up soon. Must medical facilities require orientation and medical tests which may take time. The high school students usually apply for summer positions so if you do want to volunteer make sure you sign up before then. Hope this helps.

I'm not asking anyone to lie or contribute to a fight but...
From the opinion of someone that graduated with a major I care nothing about but just to graduate........ahem, Don't know what your trauma was but do not let ANYONE (parents, friends, enemies, boyfriends, employer, clown, pilot...get the point) stop you from whatever YOU WANT TO DO..this being your career. I went to Hunter...class of 07. From 2003 to 2004 I was taking pre-nursing courses. But then I let everyone get the best of me and thus graduated with a degree in psychology and have been jumping from job to job since December of 2007. In these times it is important to get a career and not a degree. A nursing degree (plus the license) makes you a nurse. A psych. degree made me...uh well I'm still trying to figure that out. I do see where your parents are coming from and I respect them for that. You sound like you have a lot of distractions. GET RID OF THEM....especially if the boyfriend is not husband material. You dont need to go "a few years in the field." If graduating next spring is what you want to do then consider applying to an accelerated one-year nursing program. If you need to learn more about the nursing field consider volunteer or internship work in a medical setting.

Should I have a baby now or in a few years
I know you want advice from nursing students but I'm a mom so I'm providing advice from my experience. I am a pre-nursing student, 26 y.o with a 23 month old son. What keeps me going is stability. I have a wonderful husband and my parents and sister live close by so in difficult times all four of them serve as life-lines. I also have church members who are high school students that dont mind babysitting when I have late night classes. My advice to you is to discuss this with you mate. Write out all possible scenarios if you can. Things to look at are finances and resources. Do you have financial stability? Can you juggle classes with childcare? Especially in your child's first 8 months of life who will you trust to be there for him/her if you're not available? What does that person's schedule look like? Just some things to consider......
