IBCLC
I am an ICU nurse, but with a passion in childbirth. I am a birth doula, and will be shadowing two CNMs within the next month, to make sure becoming a CNM is what I really want to do. One in a birth center and the other in the office (won't allow to go to any hospital births). But I would love to get my IBCLC along the way. Would I be able to offer breastfeeding help on my website for other moms (not just my doula clients) to apply that to my hours needed? I say that because I do not work in L&D or PP (those nurses usually fulfill those hours within a year). Thanks in advance!

Leaving L&D during orientation
Thank You guys! Went ahead and talked to her, and she appreciated it a lot. She will let me know though if there is any paper to be filled out. Yes, I still have my position in ICU. PRN, and will probably sign up for shift starting next week sometime.

Leaving L&D during orientation
I have been orientating for seven weeks in L&D now. I have come to realize that it is not what I want to do and would like to go back to ICU and let those that really want to do L&D, have a chance. I am still in my orientation! Do I still have to do a two weeks notice? Do I have to do everything in person? Go to HR? Manager? I just want to get out without them asking me soo many questions. Thx!

After vaginal birth, recovery!
Thank you guys for all of your input and thanks for the advice on having baby breastfeed immediately to have the uterus contract, makes a lot of sense.

After vaginal birth, recovery!
Orientee question! I understand that pressing on Mums tummy is to make sure no blood clots are being left behind. Why do some RNs press SO hard that sometimes Mum is crying?

So Excited!!!!
Congrats for the new position. I have been wanting to work in L&D for the longest time myself, and finally after 2 years of applying here and there I finally got a position in L&D too, and even at the hospital I wanted too. WOOHOO for us. Good bye ICU, welcome L&D.

New nurse in Labor and Delivery
Jeanster, I had always wanted to work in L&D, even before starting nursing school. Then when I had my interviews for L&D it just didn't work, they didn't want me. I started in ICU and learned SO much, I am kinda glad I did. You could start Med/Surg and later cross-train in L&D!?

New nurse in Labor and Delivery
I graduated in Dec 2010 and went straight to ICU, even though I have been wanting to work in L&D. It is very hard to get into L&D and I am so excited to say that I was offered a position in L&D yesterday and at the hospital I really like. Starting orientation in Dec!!!

C-section vs. letting Mom go naturally
I agree with everyone here, I am the kind of person that also advocates for conscious birthing. Many women don't receive informed choices. We need more, out of hospital, birth-class'. Next week, I will be cross-training in L&D, and I know there will be times that I will hate having chosen L&D. But I want to be their voice for many reasons mentioned here. Childbirth is a rite of passage! Bonding with the mother is so important, but insteat in todays high-tech driven world our babies bond with machines.

midwife/doula
@ Apgar10, you definately explained it very well and I now understand the CPM route a bit more. That is the route I would like to go.
