What is your biggest struggle
I worry that MSN programs don't include enough clinical hours. I think it should be mandatory for NP students, like medical students, to have a residency of 1-2 years. It would definitely ease the transition from student to competent provider. I looked into residency programs, but there were very few and most of the deadlines had passed by the time I graduated. So it didn't make sense to start a job, and then leave for residency after 6-7 months. I think it's a serious issue because many employers think that you should be at the level of a physician who has just completed residency, but that's quite far from the truth.

California Furnishing License
Yeah I graduated from a school on the East coast so I guess that's what would make them not grant me the CII part. Did you do the CII course? Was there an exam you had to pass? I'm sure all the CA schools have these requirements already built into their programs. Sucks for us outsiders!

Things you need to do RIGHT NOW!
If my employer if offering malpractice coverage, what additional coverage should I consider getting? Should I request a copy of the malpractice policy?

California Furnishing License
I see...so how do they evaluate your course to make sure it meets that Controlled Substance II requirement? It just seems so tedious to do all these measures. So this link here (http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/regulations/npr-i-16.pdf) says that: The NP authorized to furnish Schedule II by approved standardized procedure, who has a United States DEA number, shall complete, as part of their continuing education requirement, a course including Schedule II controlled substance based on the standards developed by the BRN. Does this mean that I only need to complete the Controlled Substance II course as part of continuing education and not as a requirement to get my actual Furnishing license? Sorry for the long post, I'm so confused!

California Furnishing License
Thank you for sending that link! It was really helpful. My program director mailed out the Advanced Pharmacology verification form. Sooo...I'm assuming she read all the requirements attached to the form and determined my Advanced Pharm course met the Furnishing License requirements? Does the BRN do their own investigation of the course to make sure it meets the requirements, or is the signature of my program director validation? I'm just eager to start working!!

Getting ready to take ANCC
I took my ANCC exam in October 2014 and passed on the first try. I studied for a little less than 2 months. I used several different methods to study. However, out of all of them, the best study materials were the Leik book (it has about 600 questions in the back) and both ANCC volume I and II books. My best advice is to do as many questions as possible. My exam had a lot of non-clinical questions, random things from hierarchy of research to legislation. Definitely read up on the cultural issues in Leik, there were at least 5-6 questions on that stuff. For example: what is the Spanish term used for evil eye and the answer was "mal ojo". I recall several questions on Hypertension, Diabetes, Ophtho and Derm. They also had photos on the exam. For instance, they would ask you which patient would you treat for an antibiotic and they have four pictures of people with different eye conditions. Based on the eye conditions, you have to determine which one is an infection and would need antibiotics. So these are just the specifics of my particular exam but I hope it helps you in figuring out what to focus on! To me personally, I found the non-clinical questions to be more difficult. Luckily many of my classmates and friends took the exam right before me and had similar exam questions so they gave me a heads up. If I didn't study the non-clinical information, I would've failed! Best of luck!!

California Furnishing License
Hi fellow NPs! I'm a new NP graduate and just accepted a job in California. I'm now in the process of applying for my CA furnishing license. For those with experience, do you know how long it takes to get the license once the BRN has received your application, fee, and verification of pharmacology course form? Also under "Key Points" for the verification form, it says the pharmacology course must include: • The furnishing responsibility for Schedule II, III, IV, V controlled substances that are to be furnished with a patient-specific protocol in compliance with Health and Safety Code section 11000 for NPs. • The furnishing responsibility for Schedule II, III, IV and V controlled substances that are to be furnished with a patient specific protocol in compliance with Health and Safety Code 11056 for CNMs. • The Pharmacy Rules and Regulations for NPs and CNMs, Health & Safety Codes and OBRA 1990 Section 483-40, Federal Register. I've looked at my pharmacology course objectives and I can't recall if we specifically discussed these three points in lecture. Our course objectives were also not as specific as the requirements listed on the Furnishing license form. If, for some reason, my pharm course doesn't meet these requirements, does that mean I can never get a CA furnishing license? I looked at this link for answers, (http://www.rn.ca.gov/pdfs/regulations/npr-i-25.pdf). However, it didn't really address this specific issue. Appreciate your help!

Congrats to you guys!! Please join the group on facebook, there's a lot of info on there that's helpful :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/280886818645195/ @Stacy- I found out via e-mail the same day as my interview. If they told you they would give you a decision that same day and they haven't, I would definitely call Niki Kelley asap. Also check your spam/junk mail because Niki said a lot of times her e-mails end up there. Best of luck, hope it's good news! :)

As far as the health insurance requirement goes, I guess it's more for Jefferson to cover their back legally to make those requirements rigid. My insurance right now is really affordable (no deductible!) so it would really be a pain to have to switch.

I sent a request too, hopefully it'll be an easier way to keep in touch :)

@ Steillare- Niki sent me the same e-mail and I replied with my SSN but never got confirmation so I tried calling her several times but to no avail. Sigh... As for health insurance, I currently have coverage thru IBX-KHPE. It's less than $200/month and I believe it meets the insurance requirements. I have script coverage, vision, radiology tests...the whole nine yards. No dental but my dad is a dentist so I'm covered there You just have to apply online. They can give you a quote for each policy/plan depending on a little form that you fill out. Hope this helps!

Yeah that was my issue too, no SSN on file. But I logged on to the banner web and it took me to a page where I could enter in missing info (i.e. SSN) and then it said it would take 24 hours to generate the key. I did this Monday evening but when I tried to look up my campus key earlier today, it still could not find it. I'll try to call admissions and see what the deal is.

Is anyone having difficulty getting a campus key? I've called Niki Kelley, a few admin assistants, and the IT department several times and either no one picks up and/or they cannot assist me. I haven't been able to access Pulse or my Jeff Mail yet. I want to get started on everything but feel behind because of this!

I was accepted to Villanova's BSN Express program and waitlisted at UPenn but I decided to choose Jeff over Villanova. The pros for Villanova were that it was very short commute (15 mins), a great overall school, they also just renovated the nursing school and it's beautiful (as well as the overall campus), the tuition is reasonable, it has a good reputation, they offer medical mission trips during the 2-week breaks for the nursing students (Peru and a few other countries). The pros for Jeff were that it's nursing school is one of the best in the area, great clinical sites at top hospitals (Jeff, HUP, CHOP), the option to get your MSN, shorter period for getting the BSN (12 months vs. 14 months for Nova), incorporation of technology in clincals (iPad). I think Jeff and Nova were a close tie for me. I personally loved Nova's nursing school. If they also offered the MSN, I think I would've chosen it over Jeff for sure. That was the one really big deciding factor for me since I'm seriously considering getting the MSN. Was anyone else in a similar situation?
