Cheri, I saw that in the mail a few days ago, but to be fair at least two of the local (St. Louis) nursing programs are charging over $510 a credit hour so the DCN rate is still in line. As far as I can tell only the community colleges are lower than DCN and the waiting list is forever. Also, did you get the PM that I sent last week? Kelly

I usually take notes even though I am recording, so I try to type from my notes and fill in the blanks from the recording. I still have to listen to the whole recording, so it takes just over an hour per hour of recording by the time I type my notes in first. However, for the one time I lost my notes and just had the recording I took twice as long!! Keep in mind that I am writing word for word since I am being tested on the material. Also, Micobiology was foreign to me, if I'd understood the material better I certainly could have condensed the material down. Kelly:)

I am a Nursing student and my Microbiology spoke so fast that I went out and bought the Olympus digital recorder at Target. I didn't get the software to convert it to text since so many of the words used in Micro are unusual. After each lecture I just download the digital recording and type it out myself. On high quality I can get 1 hour 28 min before it is full. I hope this helps. Kelly:)

carly, no, every nursing school, online or not, has a set amount of students that they allowed to take. if i understood them correctly, deaconess is trying to increase their number to accommodate more applicants and this increase would require the states stamp of approval. dcn is fully approved by the state and almost all other states recognize their program. i was told that california, new york and one other state (the advisor couldn't remember specifically which one right off top of her head) somewhere in the south are the ones that do not recognize the dcn program. in an earlier post futuredcnnurse suggested that the reason some may not have heard anything yet could be due to dcn waiting for tuition deposits for those who have been accepted so far. if someone doesn't pay then that would open up a door for someone perhaps like yourself. i am keeping my fingers crossed for you! kelly:)

I just spoke to DCN admissions and specifically asked if they were waiting for state approval to add 20 more students to their program. They said yes that is what they are waiting for and that they didn't know even which way it was leaning. Kelly:)

I think Marci makes an excellent point. They probably don't want to tell people "no" until they have confirmation that all accepted will attend. Kelly

just wanted to let you know that i called dcn admissions yesterday because i still haven't received my packet yet. i asked them what was happening with their "experimental program" where they plan to add 20 more students, and i was told that they still hope to do that but they do not know when it will go ahead... they hope by fall it will be available but maybe not until january. if i had to guess, i would say they are waiting on state approval to add students to their enrollment. with that in mind i wouldn't give up yet. i am supposed to contact admissions on thursday to let know if i have received my packet, when i speak to them i will ask about the northwest situation...sometimes you get different info from different people, so i will give it a try. what state are you in specifically so i can narrow down my question? kelly:)

It's now after 7:00 did you or your friend (or anyone) get a phone call?

This is so funny just two hours ago I called them again. I had spoken with them a few times about both their day and Weekend/evening programs. The W/E program requires that you have more math than I currently have and a statisics class completed on top of the ones that I have already finished (i.e a&P, psych etc...) before you can apply to that program. The day program has a small waiting list for fall 05, but still is an option. However, there is a new program starting this fall at Maryville (pending state approval) that is an accelerated day BSN program just like their W/E one with the same preq requirements. What makes it more appealing for me is that I could attend during the day when my kids were in school (the W/E is tough because my husband works Saturdays and my son has baseball games). If I do this I would complete the math and stats classes and apply for the accelerated program in fall 06. The program is going to be 4 semesters offered in Fall and Spring (no summer session) so I would be able to complete a BSN by May 08. Of course my first choice is still DCN but I am keeping my options open. Thank you for taking the time to make the suggestion! Kelly:)

I forgot to mention that when I called yesterday I asked again about the FAll start and mentioned that I knew of someone who started last fall. I was told that they used to have a fall start but were no longer offering it because of clinical saturation. However, when she spoke of the clinical saturation I remember her saying something about St. Louis, so maybe the program isn't available to those in STL...I don't know. If you speak with them again it might be worth asking about since each of us seem to get a slightly different answer each time! It would be wonderful if we were all accepted and could sit back and laugh about this, at the very least we have already developed a support system with each other. Kelly:)

I called yesterday afternoon and was told that the Dean of Admissions was out of the office and that the committe hadn't met yet. If you don't get accepted for Summer 05, who here plans on applying for Jan 06?:wink2: Kelly

I can't speak for anyone else but I did look into a couple of PN programs, one at the CC only starts once a year in January so I missed this by a couple of Months...I know Jan 06 isn't that far off, but the PN program takes a full year at the CC and after it you can only get credit for one semester of the RN program rather then the full year you put in. Another PN program that I looked at was also a year long and they wanted the same amount of money per credit hour that DCN wants. Neither of these were options for me. I have tried to look at this from every angle that I can think of. Thanks for the suggestion:) .

Your sweet to tell me that! What do you think may have made the difference for you? Could it be your location in reference to the clinical sites?

Cheri, This is soooo interesting because when I spoke with DCN in January I told them that I want to apply for the fall start. We spoke about when I would want to have my application in by etc. I was told to wait until after March to apply because they wouldn't even look at it until the summer applicants were chosen. So in March I called back with a question as to the exact date to have my application in by for the fall start and was there isn't a fall start, only January and May. I refered to the conversation I'd had in January, quoting the name of the person I had spoken with and was told "no, there isn't a start in the fall" AND when I asked when this had changed I was told there hadn't been one ever, that the clinical sites couldn't keep up with three starts per year. I began to think that I had misunderstood the person in January and that when I said "FAll" she meant "Winter". So then I had to rush to get my application in for the summer start and here I wait. This is so frustrating because there seems to be so many contradications in the admissions process. Also, I was told to wait and see if I was accepted before seeking clincal sites. I wonder if I have done myself a disservice by not locking that into place. I live in St. Louis so maybe it helps because they know you can go to Forest Park Hospital for the clinicals, I don't know. I am so impressed that you had contracts signed before you were even accepted. You would think that demonstrated your level of commitment. I really appreciate the support. Did you go ahead an accept one of the local programs yet or are you still hoping that April 12th might be bring you good news?:)

After reading your post above... it is official....I am definatley depressed now. If you didn't get in with your qualifications, then I don't think I have a shot. I had thought since my GPA was 3.5 and I had A&P I & II completed, as well the other Gen Ed stuff, and am almost done Micro that I might be able to get in, but if you didn't I certainly don't see how I could. I'm not sure who fits into the desired category. You mention clinical sites, there aren't any hospitals close to you that have an agreement with DCN?
