  1. Yep. I live in NC and make $25/hr, been an RN for 3 years. I took a travel job in CA and made $70 an hour. You know what, I could not wait to get back to my old job. I was working in Santa Cruz, the cost of living was sky high, traffic was bad and I missed how sweet the tea and people were in the south. I don't know the answer, because yes I think we should get paid more in the south. However the hospital in CA was a mess, I'm talking dangerous people. For one it was management heavy, but when it came to actual people taking care of the patients there were not enough. Not enough pharmacests, nurses, CNAs, transporters, sitters, housekeeping, the list goes on. Two with the state mandated nurse/pt ratio there is a backlash. In NC I may have had 6 patients but I also had a CNA, a unit secretary, hospital transport, etc. In CA I had 5 patients and no support staff. I'll take the NC situation any day of the week. I know I just worked at one hospital in CA, maybe not all of them are like that.
  2. Sounds like floating may not be the best option for you. I have a learning disability, dyslexia. Things just take me longer then other people, but I do a good job. One of the ways I cope is to make myself as familiar with my surroundings as possible. Sounds like you could due without the added stress of reorienting to a new unit every time.
  3. Our class of 64 students is split up into 5 lab groups and split again into 10 clinic groups. For each clinic group we have our own instructor that is on the floor with us as well as the nurse we are working under. In lab we have two instructors! I think this is great because we get so much individual attention. I am sorry you feel neglected by your instructors. Is there anyway you can make an appointment with your instructor to get some more one-on-one. As far as your lab partner goes call her out, but do it nicely. The next time it is clear she is lost say "it really helps me when I read and take notes on the chapter before class, do you want to meet in the library before lab next time and read it together? You can practice some therapeutic communication that way...lol, good luck!
