  1. I am a Psych NP, I do not deal with children as I have seen way too much harm done to children in the name of psychiarty. I would never consider giving Risperal to a child. My question is, "would you allow your child to be in a study of an experimental drug?" In effect giving a psych drug to your child is doing exactly that! THese medications have NOT been tested in children. Who knows what effects medications have on the up/down regulation of neurotrasmitters and receptor sites, esp. in a developing brain. That having been said, I believe that Duke University is working with BPAD in children. I would never allow my PCP/pediatrician to treat a child with "BPAD" and for sure would not allow a general Psychiatrist to do it... I would look for somebody who had extensive experience in treating primarily BPAD in children. Personally, I would recommend caution. Al
  2. Our DON will not consider anybody without 1 to 2 years general nsg experience. That having been said, we are understaffed and have a lot of dead weight, because she can not afford to train anybody. Then if and when anything medical turns up all the nurses panic and ship the patient off to a "real hospital." I was hired at another hospital on a PRN basis the day after I passed the NCLEX. Some of the older nurses gave me ****, excuse me... all of the older nurses give me...... but I understood that they were just eating their own and in time they would come to love me,.... they were and they did! In my opinion, give me a new grad and I would train him/her. Al
  3. I work as a psych NP in a state psych hospital. We can do anything execpt admit, discharge and give the admission diagnosis or d/c diagnosis. I did a rotation at an acute medical hosptial and the Psych NP was able to do the psych consults and the bedside in the med floor/ICU etc., however her covering MD had to do the follow-up and sign off.
