  1. Hi benm93..no, not an MPH at UPeace, but a masters in peace - how cool is that?!...I think all life experience helps out:)..The question is what do you want and why? Emory offers a combo path - nursing w/ MPH...The Peace Corp will be magnificent...How much time do you have before a pay check is pressing? Nursing will get a job most anywhere (not necessarily your ideal, but a job) and might help to support a MPH...so many considerations that only you can decide...Where do you see yourself working, what do you see yourself doing, who are you working with, how much are you getting paid, and what does your day look like?...Then build what you want from your dream...you go after where you want to get in - not where 'they' let you in...you are the designer of your own life:)...Why don't you take on the Peace Corp - that is a 2 yr. commitment - right?...I have an idea that you will discover a great deal about what you want from that experience and you can be applying to the school of your dreams while working...too, a Peace Corp assignment is a real resume builder:)
  2. have you looked into the Peace Uni (UN) in Costa Rica? http://www.upeace.org/
  3. this is great...I am so tickled that you both have asked this important question about MPH vs. a BSN...I have been in PHN for many moons...work internationally and teach PHN. Here is a quick over view of the drivers: PH is a shifting field w/ accreditation beginning this year www.phaboard.org - MPHers are expanding and some say are 'pushing' nurses out...I don't think that is true, but I do think that today's BSN is not as well prepared for today's PH practice as are MPHers...HC reform is driving toward prevention/health promotion, but not until 2018...short answer: you need both - a nursing degree and an MPH if you want to be optimally effective in PH...however, nursing edu. is driven by state board exams which are based on the medical model (i.e. - pt. safety)...so will have to be focused on the acute/hospital stuff through BSN-ville...a good combo-school is Emory...You can also be a certified PHN through ANCC...Nursing and PH are a perfect fit - a BSN w/ a MPH will be a great career choice as things are looking to be lining-up nationally and globally...Best wishes!!
  4. ah...critical thinking at its best:)...Not really a trick question, but an initial scan of the situation will reveal if you need help/backup/more advanced care and should be dialing a phone or starting some breaths/current CPR protocol - a la carte you need a plan and priorities...then get to the work of assessment at whichever level is appropriate...don't forget to include your and the pts. safety...Good luck! Did you get the job?
  5. Hi Patrick1rn.. congratulations on the book! I have 2 - one traditional, 1 self-pub. You're right...now the work begins:). So...a couple thoughts: 1. do you love your book? 2. do you have an 'elevator pitch' that is so compelling that someone who is not your relative will want to read it? 3. do you know exactly who your target audience is? (if it is written for nurses - there are 3 mil. RNs, 900,000 LPNs, 32% are in non-acute care setting, average age 48, etc., etc...which nurses, where, how old, which setting, urban/rural, etc...) 4. how is it published...self, traditional, e-book? each has unique targeted strategies 5. what does your book give the reader - what experience will they have? (inspired, take action, learn, etc...) 6. did you write a book proposal to a publisher? (if not - check out the big houses and their guidance [Elsevier, Jones & Bartlett, Sanders, etc...]) 7. do you have any supplemental; materials - like faculty materials, pp, study guide, etc.? 8. 2 book recommendations: Guerriilla Marketing for Authors http://www.amazon.com/Guerrilla-Marketing-Writers-Weapons-Help/dp/089879983X and The Author's Guide to Building an Online Platform; Chandler 9. You don't sound too excited...if you're not, this may not be the path 4 you and you might want to hire a publicist or someone who loves marketing...It takes a ton of energy - positive energy will serve you better:) Best wishes!! and have fun:)
  6. wow...think of the possibilities! This will open-up tremendous opportunity for nurses across disciplines. I imagine that this is a private pay type business targeting clients who can afford the coaching - or are there any models for reimbursement either now or being considered (outside of entities like Humana)? How are BON viewing the practice? Best wishes to Yiggs & cosmicmama on this intriguing journey:)!
  7. This is a wonderful thread:)...I am impressed by the possibility for each of you and heartened to hear of your adventures into business and of the thoughtful advice. I am intrigued that many of the business models discussed here are based on the medical model - which I guess makes sense as that is where HC $ flows. What I wonder is - if we could set aside any notions of limitations - what HC businesses do Americans need that have not been implemented on a broad scale because we have limited our thinking to the medical model - and a little with CAP (really an alternative version of the medical model)? A 'Google' search of 'nurse entrepreneur' reveals legal consultants and a few speakers/trainers. As we continue the journey of HC reform, what gaps do you think nurses can fill that we have historically deferred?
