So just tell me I'm being silly and shake it off. Had a sub today and easily got a 20% increase in visits today. Plus lunch time kids are just pouring in. I assess to make sure it's they're not bleeding, or if there's an emergency and send them on their way to get a pass from teacher. Today had a student, what looked like a scratch on face. She told me it was a scratch, it looked like one. So I clean wound, abx ointment. Instructions not to touch. Bell rings, I get a call from mom. "It's not a scratch, its a bruise, its purple! Didn't you put ice? Don't you call parents? Why wasn't I informed, I live close by I could've gone to check on my baby!" I'm stunned because I sent a kid home today because he had a sizeable hematoma forming on his head, I called parents, I assessed him till mom got there, etc. And this lady is yelling at me about a scratch that I patched up and sent back to class. I explained what I saw, I explained that sometimes wounds change over time (it's been 4 hrs), I explained if she rubbed on it there might have been more chance of bruising but from what I saw I treated as I needed to. Needless to say I'm going to make a note to call for every sniffle she comes in for. Tell me I did ok. I feel crummy.

I guess because it had been a long day but I was about to leave for the day when a kid comes in with his parent. The kid complaining that sibling bit him, (no visible bite, blood, teeth indentions), so why was this a nurse problem? Mom was right there. Ugh. I was annoyed. rant over.

I wish I could offer more insight, but I've been at it 3 wks. I told myself when I got this job I'd give it a whole school year (with the idea that some people have jobs they hate till they retire) so if I didn't like it I could do a few months. That being said. Sometimes I feel lonely, I miss my old unit (day surgery) and my old coworkers and being around nurses... but I can't beat the schedule and time with my 1 yr old. My husband gently reminded me that I said the same things when I moved from my first job to then one I just left for school nursing. It's a natural progression of something new. So I say give it some time, give it the school year and see how you feel after a whole summer off. Hugs from Texas. í ½í±í ¼í¿¼

To top yesterday off, 20 mins to the dismissal bell-teacher falls...broken hip.

Thanks for the support guys. Stocking up on saltines, peppermint, and practicing my boss voice. God knows I didn't use it at bedside with all our customer service pep talks/surveys.

I know I kind of wanna throw that speech out too but I'm just afraid I'll get a mad parent call/complaint the next day about how I didn't allow student to call parent or didn't hear out their complaints "They could've been VERY ill" etc.

So I've been at this for all of 3 wks. Some days are better than other, but that's any job. What I'm having a difficult time with right now is the bigger littles. Give me a sick kid and I'll nurse away but the ones that aren't really sick throw me. We are benchmarking and I've have 3 so far today that come with tummy ache/vomiting? (Though they haven't vomited in clinic and otherwise seem fine, bored even:facepalm:) How do you guys deal with these types of students? I let them rest, water, bathroom if needed. If they seem real stubborn I call parents. Most of the time they parents will tell me to send them back to class and I try but then I get the theatrics, tears, etc. Totally at a loss. Feel like a pansy pushover. (not wearing pink)

Hope you guys' year is going great! I'm starting on Monday. School started almost a month ago in my part of Texas but got hired late. I come from a outpatient surgery/GI/infusion/interventional radiology unit but we do get weekly peds getting surgery. Excited and nervous. Wishing everyone a great year!

So kinda trivial question but I'm overthinking about my start day on Monday 9/19 So what do the kids call you? Nurse First Name Nurse Last Name Ms./Mr. Last Name How about teachers? First name basis? Same as above? I feel silly thinking this hard. I'm just curious what everyone else does.

Yeah, it's a kind of a big-ish district. Every school has a nurse.

New to the school nurse forum. I recently signed my contract for elementary school nurse position in Texas. When I was hired I told my supervisor that I would have to give my 2 wks notice to my hospital job. It wasn't my intention to start so late in the year but I had to wait for the position to be approved by the school board yadayadayada. So my humble request to this fine group, what are some pearls of wisdom you can share? Tips on having a late start? (My district has a screening team that helps out with the screenings.) TIA!
