  1. I graduated this program in 2006 in NY and I have been working as an LPN ever since. I took the full time program. I think taking it part time may be better, just because you have more time to absorb all of the content. The FT program goes quickly and it is very hard, but in the end very rewarding. Good luck
  2. I am in an 11 month 1260 hour course for LPN. We are in our Medicine rotation right now. I love it so much. Our graduation is scheduled for July 28th. Yippee! Take care, Tracy
  3. HI. This is semi related. I am a nursing student now in the LPN program and didn't hear anything in A&P about a cat.. Crossing fingers for no.. But 3 years back I took veterinary assisting. It was great and my teacher worked at on of long islands best emergency animal hospitals. Well one night she brought in an amputated German Shepard Leg. This thing was a male, hug back leg. It was the freakiest thing, with all of the fur on it. The leg was intact, the paw was there. I couldn't get over it. But once she removed the hair and cut into it I could look and get over it. Also knowing the dog was still alive and had to get the leg removed helped me accept it alot too. Good luck to you Tracy
  4. HI. I am in school right now for LPN. It is a much shorter program full time. Then if you work as an LPN here (in NY) most hospitals pay for you to go back and get your RN. In NY state there are only 3 things LPN cannot do that RNs do. They just paid alot less, and have less education. Either one is great I think. Take care!
  5. Thank you guys for the wonderful words. I am so happy to be back here with some good news. I may ask some questions from time to time about school. I am resting alot and trying to eat well. I am taking my meds ontime and really giving my all to school. It is only week three but I have learned so much already. I am excited to be back here. Talk to you soon, Tracy
  6. HI Mary ann thanks so much for the speedy reply. I am still in the advanced program. It is very fast and hard, but I will accomplish so much in the next year it is all worth it! My meds were actually just increased do to some non stop finger spasms last week. My neuro likes to play it safe. But knock on wood no Grand Mals so I seem to have adjusted to the meds well. I look forward to being a part of this community. Take care, Tracy:wink2:
  7. HI! I just had to reply. I am back in the program now and have been since the start of September. I am so much healthier this year it is great and I am really enjoying school. Thanks for everyones support. Tracy
  8. Thank you very much for the kind reply. I am not going to know for a while if I will ever maintain Seizure control. I do hope so. Now I am wondering if Medical Assisting would be a good route for the time being. Not to offend anyone, but I know MA's have alot better schedules and the workload isn't so heavy. I want into this feild, just not confident LPN will be in the near future. Can anyone advise? Any Medical Assistants out there. Thanks again, Tracy
  9. Thank you all so very much. Your posts are very uplifting and this sad time for me. I do have all of my level on textbooks so I will be looking into the basic nursing book that is like 3,000 pages long. That is a great idea. Also I think donating some time at a health care facility would be great. For now, Drs orders are that I cannot drive for 90 days post last seizrue. My last was on my birthday 9/9. The day after my first day of school. Your words of encouragement really make me hopeful that this is just a bump in the road. Talk to you soon and keep posting to me, It lifts me up. Tracy
  10. Mary Ann, thank so much for the nice reply. I know everything happens for a reason. I am a firm believer in that. I just can't see why yet!! Well this is hard for me and thanks for asking me to post and let you know how I am . I felt like I couldn't come back here until school starts next year. When I had a meeting with the nursing administrator, they told me they would "keep my file open" so I dont' have to go threw the entrance exam, interviews and references all over again. That was a relief. I was so excited to start my journey. I hope to still keep in contact with you all. Thanks for listening. Tracy
  11. Hi my name is Tracy, I came on here about a month ago. I had just been recently diagnosed with seizures. Well, I tried nursing school only for afew days. The AED's I am on Keppra 500/MG BID, made me like a zombie, tired and dizzy. I have basically no memory at this point The class was so excellorated. I had to postpone until next entry fall 2005. I am very upset about all of this. My diagnosis couldn't have come at a worse time. I worked so hard to get into the Exellorated program and now I have to wait a whole year. I just wanted to say hello to you all. You all gave me a real warm welcome when I first joined. I am just really sad that the timing with everything was so "off" Well thanks to all of you who welcomed me in the beginning. I am wondering if once my seizures are controlled if I will be "fit" to be a nurse. Well maybe not home health care. WEll see. Talk to you all soon. Tracy
  12. I agree that it is important that we differentiate between the two kind of seizures; Epileptic and NON-Epileptic, so the proper treatment can be given. Though I am not a nurse yet, I really do have a good understanding because I myself am an epileptic. If you are speaking of people abusing avitan well I haven't read much about that, but maybe because I associate with true epileptics who rely on these drugs for their health. I know that it is extremely helpful when a person can sense a seizure is coming on. I think drug abuse stinks and ruins things for people like me that really do have problems. Though my problems aren't so severe that I need avitan. I think the only time I would go to the hospital again after a seizure is obviously if it lasts longer then 5 mins. But if I bit threw my lip and needed stiches or broke a limb do to the clonic movements. Just trying to start a helpful post so more folks understand more about seizures. TS
  13. Thanks alot everybody, I thought it was something important to post. Besides being a patient, I am going into the nursing feild. SO I really wanted to give my opinion and hopefully educate some people who are not very familiar with seizures. I know my BF just finished the course I am about to enter and they don't know much of anything about seizures, just what to do when one happens. The basics like turning the head to the side to clear the airway, not to restrain or put objects in the mouth. Hope I was helpful....have a nice labor day weekend, Tracy :balloons:
  14. I personally know at the Long Island BOCES that I am attending it is them who restricts alot of loans/grants. We can't apply for TAPS or anything. Just Pell Grant and certain boces approved loans. It is unfortunate, they almost want to make you shy away from the program if you don't have enough money. Wether it be $6K or $10K it is alot for people to come up with out of pocket. I hope you find some help where you live....
  15. Thank you, and Yankees do RULE!!! Tracy
  16. I just wanted to say that I myself had a seizure. I lost conciousness, urinated on myself, had tonic-clonic motions. I did not "foam at the mouth" and I did have an aura (luckily which told me something was wrong so I sat down) EEG cannot rule out Epilepsy, they can only confirm it. Auras can last 20-30 mins, an "aura" is a simple partial seizure in itself. Generally it manifests into a TC seizure but not always. You are lucky if you only get the simple partial. You would have to catch an actual seizure on the EEG and sometimes they occur so deep within the brain that they don't even show up on the EEG. I have done extensive research on Epilepsy and seizure disorders. I am going into nursing school in a week. Probably half the reason this facinated me and have done sooo much reading on the subject. I think that opening a seizing persons eye and pointing your index finger near it is extremely dangerous! Here is a link to show how many different types of seizures that there are. If they aren't TC it is hard to even realize they are happening unless you work for a neuro, have extensive training in seizures, or have them yourself...check it out: http://www.epilepsyontario.org/clie...eb.nsf/web/noct Peudo seizures are really not Faking. That is really the wrong and outdated term. This kind of seizure truly does manifest from anxiety or mental issues. It is actually not electrical discharges from the brain causing this, but still a serious issue. I can tell you that after I was in the hospital for three days, I decided to get a second opinion. I couldn't believe I had such a horrible seizure and why I couldn't figure out. This loser neuro told me I had simple syncope and told me after he got my EEG results I could assume driving. He was so sure he was right. Well when the ordering neuro got my EEG results they were abnormal. I had sharp spiking in my frontal lobes, suggesting seizure activity nocturnally. Needless to say the second neuro never even called me back..he was so sure of himself and probably was shocked when he got those results. I have realized that seizures are very serious no matter what kind of epilepsy you have. I currently take Keppra BID 500/MG and have been seizure free...knock on wood. Sorry this is lengthy, but I wanted to give my point of view...

  18. I just wanted to say I am doing BOCES LPN starting this wednesday and my course costs $10,000 I am wondering why such a difference in price I only got an $800 pell grant. I am looking into VESID to see if they can help me out due to the seizure disorder. Good luck. Tracy
  19. Hello thank you so much for sharing your story with me. I did only have that one tonic clonic seizure as well. But I did have the abnormal EEG so that was enough for the neuro to put me on the Keppra. It makes me sluggish and a little foggy minded, but I think that will wear off after a while. Glad to hear that you are seizure free. Hope you are doing well and hope to speak with you soon, Tracy
  20. Is there anyone else out there that can post on this subject. I was looking of as many opinions as possible. (from a nurses viewpoint) Does anyone know about the AED's that they put me on. I seem to be tolerating them pretty well, they just make me very tired. Talk to you later, Tracy
  21. Hi thanks for the great response. I am hoping that I will be able to acheive my goals in nursing school with everything going on right now with my health issue. Cross your fingers for me!!
  22. Hello everyone, my name is Tracy, my birthday is next thursday and I will be 24. Next wednesday I enter the LPN program at our local boces. I am very excited. I am an only child. I have 3 dogs who I love very much. A wonderful boyfriend of 5 years. I had my first seizure 7/19/04. I was in the hospital for 3 days. I had an AEEG and it showed "borderline suggestive seizure activity (sharp spiking) in the frontal lobes nocturnally". That was enough for the Neuro to put me on AED's. So I take Keppra twice a day. This is all very new for me and a tad scary. Anyway I am very excited to start nursing school and look forward to future discussions on the boards. :) Tracy
  23. This is one of the funniest threads I have seen in my life!!! I am 23 and surely know what a second hand. Must be a funny! Tracy
  24. Lastly a special thank you to Roobarb` BULLETPROOFBARB who directed me to this forum. It is great and have a good night. I hope that school will not be too overwhelming for me while adjusting to my meds. Since you are all nurses let me ask you this, I am supposed to take the meds BID 12 hours apart to have a steady constant flow. I am trying to decide what time of day is best for me. An hour after I take it, I get very tired. So I don't want this to mess up my schooling. Any ideas? Thanks TS:)
  25. I love this forum, you guys are great and I look forward to many discussions with you in the future. School starts this wednesday so I have to get my rest and fun in before then Many thanks to all of you who replied, Tracy
