  1. Esme, thank you soooooo so much for the input. It's truly invaluable. very good point about LPNs. I'm not certain our budget is unlimited. I will ask my prof. This project is one of those all semester long things. It'll be due sometime in mid-to late-April. I have encouraged my team mates to register on allnurses and come have a look at this thread. Thanks again.
  2. Moonchild, yes, we have freedom to do non-profit or stand alone ER or whatever. It's a little overwhelming not having written guidelines to at least have some sort of framework to start with! I like your non-profit idea and also the LVNs and PCTs.
  3. Hahahahaah! Those are somel things I hadn't even thought about, november and science!! Esme, to be honest we also have to create our own budget. Our professor hasn't given us anywhere to start from so we feel a little lost. We have to decide what kind of unit to build and go from there I guess. We do have to set our own staffing guidelines. We are basically starting from nothing.
  4. Hi there. I am in my last semester!! (cue hallelujah chorus) For my Leadership class our professor has asked us to design our very own patient care unit. We have to come up with a budget and staffing and decide what type of unit, i.e. ER, ICU, Med Surg floor....etc. Thankfully it's a group project and we've begun to try and start gathering information from the TX Nurse Practice Act & just searching journals for info on budget (crossing my fingers). I just thought I'd come here and see if anyone had any bright ideas as well. Thanks!
  5. Just wanted to update you guys...I GOT IN!!!! Class of 2014!! Our first orientation is set for this Thursday. Classes start August 27th. We still don't know what our schedules will be...maybe they will let us register at our second orientation? Which is August 8th..... CareAngel? Hopeful_2013? any insights? I know the emails haven't been going out to anyone on this thread. Just thought I'd try and revive it. :)
  6. I know how you feel. I hate not knowing what to plan for. I hadn't heard that about orientation. So there's something new for me. Haha. I am watching my mail like a hawk now too. Now that it's June. Watch, they won't send them till June 30th!
  7. I haven't yet. Someone told me they were told hcc is mailing them "sometime in June". Did you get yours?
  8. Hello! I am currently taking my last semester of pre-reqs at HCC. Nursing school starts August 2012. Times are tough (as in, hubs' paycheck just went down and our mortgage just went up) and I need to get a part time job. Having 4 kids and a hubby and house to take care of makes me think I need a night shift for a couple nights a week. I prefer something that is in a hospital or nursing home or just anything that has anything to do with healthcare so I can gain some experience. My problem is that I have been a stay at home mommy for 10 years and have now been taking my pre-reqs for a year to get into the program. I don't really know how to go about getting a job like that. Two or maybe three nights a week would be enough to help us get by. Can any of you offer any advice on how I should go about looking for a job? I am willing to do the grunt work! :) Thanks!
  9. I am in Pharm on Thursday mornings at HCC. Got a B on our first lecture exam. I am looking forward to our math exam this Thursday because to me, the math is easy. Hope to see y'all in Fall 2012!!!
  10. Just to update: I took the TEAS V on November 18th and got an 83 overall! I only had the ATI book I got off Amazon, studied for about two weeks solid, focused mainly on math because it's been 15 years since I was in school. I wish I had studied more on the science...I only did bad on the chemistry/physics part. I did great on everything else..only miss ONE math question! I am so excited and Ihope HCC likes my scores when I apply in January. :) Good luck!
  11. Another question: I am going to take my TEAS friday morning...yikes! and I plan on going to Coleman to apply for the ADN program for August of 2012, so I am hoping I can get that letter for approval to take Pharm in the Spring of 2012....does anyone know if that's possible? How long after you took your TEAS or HESI did they send you a letter? I'd like to hurry up and register for it. If I have to wait and take it in the fall, that's fine, then I'd just apply for the spring 2013 ADN program.
  12. naushk, I am not 100% certain on the answer to your question. All I know is when I attended the ER meeting recently, the counselor there told me that just having taken College Algebra shows that I am eligible to be in a college level math course and that's what they're looking for. However, I am still almost expecting to have to take at least 0312 and am planning my schedule around it if I have to. I just don't know for sure. Sorry!
  13. I don't really know for sure, but it was my impression that you do the fingerprinting and background check when you get accepted into the ADN program. Invitation to take Pharm is just one step before that one. Because acceptance into the ADN program is contingent on you passing Pharm and getting an A on the math portion of the Pharm test. I may be wrong though. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will respond! I am taking my TEAS Friday! How did you do on yours? When did you take it??
  14. What are the titles of the McGraw-Hill and Kaplan books? I searched on amazon for McGraw-Hill and it brought up a Nursing School Entrance Exam book, JUst wanna make sure I get the right items! My test is next friday and I already have tthe ATI book. I am terrified!
  15. Does anyone know how quickly (or slowly!) we get our TEAS results? Is this something we are given as we are leaving the testing site, or does it take more time for the grade to be calculated?
  16. Wow ladies, thank you for this info!! I am hoping to get in for fall 2012. I am in AP 1 right now with an A average so far and hoping I can keep it that way for the rest of the semester! I am busting my bootie to keep that A!!! I am taking the TEAS in November. I was told by a counselor at Coleman at the ER meeting to take TEAS, then apply at Coleman and wait for the letter for the go ahead to take Pharm, then get a great grade on the math pharm test and I should get in. I am really really really hoping to get to take pharm in the Spring. If not, maybe summer. I didn't even know it was offered over the summer. I haven't had direction in my life for a looooong time and it feels good to want something for my life. I've been stay home mommy for the past 10 years so I'm ready to do something good for me and our whole family. Thanks again for all this advice.
  17. I'm 32 and in my first semester back to school since 15 years ago. I am at HCC, going to apply to the nursing program for entry in the fall 2012 semester after I complete my prereqs. So far, I didn't have to supply my high school transcripts or my high school diploma....I graduated from a school in sugar land.....All they have asked me to provide is my college transcripts. And that was pretty easy to get...just called SFA and ordered a copy for the school and for me. I hope you find the answers you're looking for! Good luck!
  18. Congrats on getting accepted!! I am applying to the ADN program. Besides the interview, I have not heard of any of these types of requirements at all. That's a lot! Good luck!! "brief autobiographical sketch"??? I'm gonna start thinking of what I might write just in case they make us do this for ADN as well!
  19. You must have both of your basic English classes out of the way. Also A&P 1 and Intro to Psychology. A&P 2 is one you can take while in the program. Its not a prerequisite but I think they recommend you have it done before just to lighten your load during nursing school. I will look for the link to the page that shows you these requirements when I am at a real computer and not just my iPod. :-) hope that helps a little!
  20. The way the counselor at Coleman explained it was this: 1. Take the TEAS as soon as you can. 2. apply to the health science program of your choice 3. wait for the letter to take pharm and register as soon as you can (registration opens november 7 i think) 4. take pharm math test and get minimum 90% and you should get in the program. From what I understand, the pharm math exam is well into the semester that you take pharm so I don't know how all that works. I am looking at TEAS study guides on amazon right now so I can try and take that test in the next few weeks if possible. then cross my fingers that I do well enough to get me into pharm...and we'll go from there. if I don't do well on the TEAS I guess I'll just try again....I'm hoping I don't have to go down that road though. I'm so nervous. good luck! Let me know if you hear anything different.
  21. Hmmm...I am supposedly subscribed to this thread, but am also not getting emails when y'all reply to it....weird...anyways, I did get to talk to the counselor at Coleman when I went to the ER meeting. She told me I need to take my TEAS, like NOW, apply to the program, then when I get my letter saying I can take Pharm, I can register. I am just flipping out a little because registration for spring opens November 7th and I'm not sure how fast the pharmacology classes fill up.. Especially the evening ones.So right now I'm researching the study manuals for the TEAS study guides and trying to decide if I should spend $70 for the one made by ATI or get a McGraw/Hill...they both get ok reviews, but the McGraw one I just read on amazon had very very detailed reviews about what was on the test and how well the book covered it. I had asked the counselor there about my poor math grade and if she thought I would need to take math 0312 and she told me I didn't need it. even with a D in college algebra she says the fact that i just TOOK it proves I am eligible for college level math and that's all they are looking for. That kinda worries me. I wonder if I was sitting in the interview or if they were looking over my application would they pass me up over that grade? I am willing to retake it if that is the case. Problem is this will just push my plans back by one semester. I can do that, but it's just a little disappointing. I don't even know if I have time to study for the TEAS and take it before classes start in the spring....but I am gonna get it taken care of as soon as I can. I just want this to happen and I want it to happen now. I don't want it to get pushed back by a semester. I am gonna do everything in my power now to avoid that. if it happens, then it was meant to be, and if I have to wait another semester, then that just gives me time to get more ducks in more rows and more hoops for me to jump thru for them. hahahaha. I hope you get this Allinknots! OH! And what is the minimum score we have to get on the TEAS????
  22. I went to the ER meeting today! Got a lot of good info. The counselor there told me that I need to take the TEAS, then apply to the health sciences program of my choice (adn), and wait for my letter to be able to take Pharmacology for spring. I am also planning on taking AP2 and either PSYC 2314 or Math 0312(only if I absolutely have to...and she didn't seem to think I would need it since I took college algebra years ago...and I even made a D and she told me the fact that I took the class was enough...it meant that I QUALIFY for college level math of any course if that makes sense) So now I am hopeful and encouraged and thinking this will work out and I will actually be able to apply (and hopefully get in!!!) for the Fall 2012 start date.
  23. Yeah, I kind of figured a D wouldn't cut it....that was back in my younger years when I was screwing up. Now I know I could handle it. I'm going to the ER meeting this tuesday at noon to see what new info I can find out. I am really crossing my fingers that I can pull this off and apply for the fall of 2012, but I can handle it if I don't get to do that. Spring 2013 works too!
  24. Awesome, I am gonna try and make it to the Tuesday ER session at noon and talk to someone. I went to one in June before I was even enrolled in my last couple of pre-reqs and didn't even know what to ask them. I feel more prepared for that now that I've gotten on here and talked to you and others. Thanks for the info!
  25. I'm also interested in anything you can find out. Were you able to get an appointment with a counselor at Coleman? Or do you just show up and get a walk in? I am going to the stafford campus and it's frustrating that every time I walk in to speak to a counselor, it's a different person and I keep getting different information. I would LOVE to have a conversation with a counselor up there but I'm not sure what the process is of doing that.
