Tell me the downsides.
It's maddening to see NPs get paid so little down in the south and have such restrictive authority. For pete's sake, Florida NPs only this past year were allowed to prescribe narcotics! For someone that works with children post-op, I can't imagine not being allowed to order morphine or fentanyl for my patient. Education not being up to snuff in every institution. Lack of real world business minded classes in school (to be fair, they don't do this in med school either).

New grad, how long to stay in job...
Thanks for all of your insight, everyone. I know I'll stay _at least_ two years, probably more. I stayed at my RN job for 5+ years (switched departments about halfway through, but stayed in the same hospital), so I'm not a job hopper. Blue devil, the nature of my job is that it is acute care and the patient stay is usually 1 week or less. Of course, there are frequent fliers, but there are a dozen or so PNPs hired for this type of job, so the continuity of care is not quite the same as out-patient. But I see your point and yes, I don't want to be a burden in terms of recruitment and training costs.

New grad, how long to stay in job...
I'm a new grad PNP and accepted a job last week. I'm excited to get my career started, although the location isn't where I'd like to be forever. My orientation is about 2-3 months in a hospital setting. I'm hoping that once I get some experience I can move back to my home state, but I certainly want to "give" my employer a decent amount of time to them since they did hire me as a new grad. Do you guys think 2 years post orientation is good enough? Or should I go longer?

UPenn BSN/MSN 2012
I did get that about 2.5 months ago...if they're judging based on April 1st, then that'd be about May 15 or so. Okay, only about three more weeks! Best of luck to you!

UPenn BSN/MSN 2012
Haven't heard anything yet...I guess it depends on the specialty since other folks have heard back earlier...doing well to keep on the willpower not to call and ask :) I think it's hard because we don't really have a time frame of which to work with as the website says we would hear between the due date and the notification date, but I haven't been able to find any notification dates for the MSN program--has anyone else found this?

Sorry to hear that NJ best of luck applying elsewhere. Did they give you any reasons or just flat out no? Haven't heard anything yet on my application...

Good to know NJ, I haven't heard anything yet about interviews. Hopefully just 2 more weeks then!

UPenn BSN/MSN 2012
Nope, nothing yet. A few weeks ago I got that my application was officially in review and I think I have a few more weeks before I hear from them... Have you heard anything? I keep checking my online status and my mail box every day though :) good luck!!

UPenn BSN/MSN 2012
I don't know if this helps, but my hubby is in grad school right now and we did end up filing the prior year fafsa for his summer classes at the start of the program as they told us. Because if we didn't, we wouldn't have much funding for the next year's summer! It was great too because we qualified for subsidized loans for those classes... Still waiting to hear back on my application! But at least I did hear from them that my application is officially in "review" and it should another few weeks...

UPenn BSN/MSN 2012
Thanks guys, I really appreciate it! As do future applicants, I'm sure :) One last question if you don't mind: How did you get notified for an interview? Via e-mail or regular mail? My application is still in review, so I'm not sure how they will contact me...

UPenn BSN/MSN 2012
Congratulations everyone! As someone who is hoping to hear back soon and get an interview (applied for MSN)...would anyone mind telling me what kinds of questions they were asked at the interview? I know I'll probably get somewhat different questions since I'm traditional MSN, but anything would helpful!

is uk nursing qualifications the same as the us qualifications?
Very fascinating. I didn't realize there was so much differences in training!

UPenn BSN/MSN 2012
Hi folks, good luck to everyone! I'm a traditional applicant since I already have a BSN, but wanted to ask: how do you know if the school received your transcripts? I can't find it anywhere...

UNMC NICU or any other NICUs...
Hey thanks so much for the info! I can't decide whether I want to do PNP or NNP and I know UNMC only does PNP, but I know that Creighton does both... I don't see any postings for NICU in Nebraska except for Creighton right now, but I will keep my eyes open! Do you know if they hire at certain times of the year or is it just on an as-needed basis?

UNMC NICU or any other NICUs...
Hi folks, I've recently made the jump from PICU to NICU and have been working in NICU for about a year now. My husband and I are thinking about moving to Omaha next year and I'm just wondering what the NICUs are like over there? So far in Omaha, I've been able to track: UNMC (looks like Level IIIC with ECMO, do nurses go to deliveries?) Creighton (level III?) Children's Omaha (Level IIIC, but no deliveries?) Bergan Mercy (Level III, but basic?) Lakeside Hospital (Level II) I work in a pediatric hospital now, but would also like to get some delivery room experience. Any info anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated :)

Sabbatical from work...i.e. traveling
My husband and I are thinking about taking some time off of work to do some traveling in a few years. But I'm unsure of how much time it would be for me to still be a safe nurse when I get back or an employer to hire me. Anyone else done this? My background (by the time we do it) would be about 5 years of PICU experience in a tertiary center and we would like to take 6 months off to travel through Europe, Himalayas, South Pacific, etc etc. I've thought about signing up with a travel company before we left so that I could have all that sorted in case I don't get a full-time job right away...but I was reading up on some of the contracts in a few of the hospitals I'd like to work at again and for the pay scale, it's said that if you have a break in clinical experience, your years may not be all counted or at all, up to the discretion of HR. In this sort of world, I'm sure that the hospital would lean towards fewer years, and if I'm desperate for a job, then of course I would take it (My husband is a math teacher so it wouldn't be too hard for him to get a job again, just my own). Thoughts?

Vanderbilt Pre-specialty Fall 2011
Congratulations on all the accepted students! Vanderbilt is one of the schools that I've been looking at for PNP. If anyone's comfortable posting here or sending me a PM, what were you stats for your GPA/GRE? If I attended, I would be moving to Nashville itself, not doing distance, so does Vanderbilt set up clinical sites? I read about a psych NP student who couldn't get any placements...would put me off quite a bit if that happened to me...

Getting a new job and references??
What would you suggest I tell the interviewer when they ask why they can't contact my manager?

Getting a new job and references??
Hi folks, I'm looking at getting a new job in a few months in another place for better opportunities for my career...and wondering how references work? Should I tell my manager that I'm looking for a new job? It's nothing personal and I've loved working on my unit--but I'm ready to move on. I guess I feel like it would be awkward to ask them if it was okay to use them as references. We have a working relationship, but I feel like they want me to stay on for awhile longer and possibly move up the chain, which is not what I want to do. Advice?

How long are you waiting to get a job?
Hey guys, I hope to become a PNP in the next couple of years and am super excited about it! The only thing that makes me a little nervous is being female and my biological clock I'm not exactly old, but I'm definitely thinking about it more and more as I get older since I entered nursing a little later at the age of 26 and now have 3 years under my belt. I was considering trying to get pregnant about 3/4 of the way through my program so that I could have some of the pregnancy covered by not be 8 months by the end of my practicum (uncomfortable, I think!) but rather spend the 3rd trimester after graduation and studying for boards/relaxing (hubby has good insurance and would be able to cover us financially with his job). So... How long are you waiting to get a job after graduation? Is there a general time limit that you've found employers to frown upon? I'm not talking like a whole year, but 3-6 months? Likely I wouldn't be able to interview for jobs until at least a month post-partum since I'll be recovering from the birth/getting to know hopeful future child. Anyone care to share their experiences?

Creighton MSN/DNP anyone?
Hi everyone, Been lurking around for awhile...what a fantastic site this is! Anyway, didn't find much through a basic search, so has anyone applied/attended Creighton University as a graduate student? I've done a lot of research on various schools and I think this is the best fit for me, but there doesn't seem to be an open house to attend to ask questions. Do you like it? How long did it take between sending in your application and hearing back from the admissions committee? Anything else you might think useful while considering the school? Best of luck to everyone applying to grad school!
