Hello everyone! I wanted to pick some brains out there on what options I may have to work in the case management field, as well as get some general opinions or suggestions overall. A bit of background: I was a NICU nurse for a few years, and then finished my Masters and worked as a NICU and Pediatrics Clinical Nurse Specialist for a good 5 years. My kiddo was diagnosed with a disability and my world turned upside down. I ended up needing to leave my work and have been home with her and not working for a good 4 yrs or so. I am at a point where I would like to go back to work, but would need to do so from home due to her therapies and schedule. Does anyone or has anyone out there worked in case management from home and somehow make their own hours? Or anything like this? I have seen quite a few job postings that are full time but wanted to see if I could find some real life experienced nurses out there, and maybe a CNS or two, who has delved into different roles (as many of us have) to give me any sort of suggestions on how to break into the field (or anything else you can think of for an ex-CNS) and if there are specific companies that do this part time perhaps? Or if anyone has any other suggestions or things they have done having been a CNS that may be an option for me at this point in time? I would love any and all suggestions!! Hi everyone, I'm just starting the process for applying for a position as a new CNS. Can anyone offer any potential interview questions that might be asked on an interview for a CNS position? I figured this might be good practice and offer some ideas of what they may ask. :) Thank you!!

Do any of you know if a CNS would suffice in this type of role?

RNs don't intubate at our facility, only MDs and RTs

We used to use the filter, but now they come already filtered from blood bank.

I'm curious what those of you think about getting an MSN vs an MPH? Does it matter?

parent-child CNS, I'm also starting the role option in the fall! Yay!

So my understanding of this is that the ISONG certification is something that an epxerienced APN, who has been working as a genetic nurse, can apply to get. It's a basically an additional certification you can add to your license if you've worked in the field of genetics and have had a certain number of cases. You cannot claim to be an NP as you said, unless you've gone through some type of APN program and received this certification, at which point *maybe* you could work as something similar to a genetic counselor. And this is still blurry to me. My idea is to get my parent-child CNS, which I am half way through. What I'd like to find out about is if there is a genetic CNS or something of the sort. I guess I'm trying to incorporate my experience, the Master's I would have, and somehow be in the field of genetics. You mentioned that, depending on the state (I'm in CA) a CNS tailored toward genetics might work. From what I've seen not only are most CNSs general (such as the parent-child I'm doing) except for a few programs here and there, but where you can work afterwards is very dependent on what experience you've had and in what field. So if someone like me would like to break into this field somehow, what would be the best way? Genetic programs such as working with newborn screening and such require experience... but where does one start? And is there anything one can do with a CNS if the intent is to get into the genetic field? (other than take the place of a genetic counselor?). What might be some ideas for a CNS wanting to get into genetics? more school? genetic counseling degree? start off in NB screening or AFP? community health? research nurse? get the CNS and just apply to something genetic related? I guess I had the idea that a CNS could "specialize" in a particular field in which they are "clinical experts" in...?

JaneyW, how is your MSN going? which APN degree are you going for again? I'm half way now, about to start clinicals :) As far as CSUDH, they also have grants which are nice, on top of financial aid. I have always worked on blackboard. Getting to know this program is really fundamental, although I just learned how to use it as I went. Also, you should be able to get coursework done via extensions before getting admitted for whichever semester you applied to. Just be careful, not sure if these classes are considered "transfers in" like any other university, and there's a limit to how many you can take... Much luck!

Hi everyone, I have been trying to find out more about genetic nursing for some time, and it has been difficult. I have found a lot information via isong and such, but wanted to see if there were any advanced practice nurses out there who specialize in genetics in particular? I am slowly working on my CNS, but really want to eventually end up in the field of genetics and have not been able to find much out there as far as what options are with an advanced degree. Can anyone offer any information or advice? Thank you in advance.

1. How many questions did you take on NCLEX? 75 2. What study materials did you use? Did you take a test review course? Kaplan complete with questions databank. Their test #5 and 6 were great practice. 3. Did your SON offer any testing (ERI, ATI, HESI)? They had ERI testing as an option after each course, and a Hesi review afterwards which I did not do 4. How long did you wait for results of the test, or are you still waiting? 3 days (CA) 5. What were your thoughts coming out of the test (total disbelief, certainty you had failed, confident you had passed)? I had no clue what to think afterwards, I felt like I didn't totally bomb it, but there was no way I passed either. It was tough. 6. Was this your first attempt at NCLEX? Yep!!! :) So glad!

I just read the question about CNSs prescribing medication. I was under the impression, from my university, that a CNS could not prescribe where I'm from. Is this true? I thought perhaps they meant it was a California thing...? Is there any sort of link/site to find out if this is the case in Cali? Thank you for the clarification!!

I am going to end up having degrees from all over the place after this... I was mainly concerned because this would be a mostly-online Master's. Lectures would be online, but of course, clincal hours required would be at hospitals, etc. I have taken online courses before, but was not sure if this would be viewed any differently than the standard university-attended Master's. It doesn't *seem* to matter, but one always wants to make sure where they will land before making the jump!

I just thought I'd throw out the question... In your opinion, does it matter where you've gotten your Master's from? (i.e. perhaps a business degree at a particular school would matter) Or is it much like an RN or MD degree where, as long as you have the degree, and are a good nurse, that's what matters... just curious...

Hi there everyone, I'm curious to see if anyone out there has any experience with CSU Dominguez Hills. They have online nursing degrees ranging from bachelor's to master's, (including clinicals), one of which is the CNS. Does anyone have any opinions or any experience with this particular university, or opinions on getting the CNS at this university? Has anyone out there heard anything about this program? Are there differences between universities as far as where you get your CNS, or is a degree a degree, much like the RN? Any experience or opinions on this subject would be most appreciated!

Howdy, another entry MSN student checking in. Started Sept. 2005 and am finishing up this May, yay! Absolutely exhausting, and am now conteplating going PT for the NP/CNS to work FT and gain the experience necessary. I think what wiped me out was having kids to care for at home and juggling school. I'm very glad I ran through it as fast as I could, though. I'm sure I'll appreciate it at some future point. :)

Yeah, I'm over in southern CA. I have no idea what the "rules" are for a CNS out here. How would I find this out? Is it state or hospital based? Perhaps I could find out more about the CNS here in this state or specifically a NICU CNS? Any suggestions on where to look?
