  3. Hi allnurses, I am almost done with semester 2 of nursing school.whew! and my registration for classes is in 2 days. Now, I wanna know who's had their peds/maternity,which hospital and instructor. Any preference? I would appreciate your replies as this would help me decide who to pick/where to do my clinical rotation Thanks in advance
  4. i learned that I need to be assertive, that I have to let RN's know what i can and can't do for them and the patients. i learned that i am still human and just like any other people,I have feelings. I get impatient, annoyed especially when i don't have enough sleep! BUT i try my best not to show it! I learned that I cannot ,I REPEAT,cannot read all the freaking chapters assigned to me. I am not wonder woman and even if I am,I won't do it. lol. I learned that I could study a lot and still not get the grade I want. I still do my best to get the "whole picture" and think critically during exams. Nursing school somehow taught me to eliminate wrong answers and choose between the 2 "right answers" . I learned how NOT to be super sensitive and absorb negativity from other students or patients. it could be draining on my part,so why do it? I know not everyone is going to like me, who cares? I am not going to die if you don't want to be my friend/acquaintance. I have people who love me for me and that's what matters. i learned that people are different and sometimes during clinical, there are those people who would do everything to steal cool nursing procedures from you (even though they know THAT ONE IS YOUR PATIENT!) seriously? and sometimes, having 10 people in clinical doesn't help either! a few individuals HOG the instructor's time and when it is time for you to pass you meds, you WAIT,WAIT AND WAIT for them to be done so you could do what you have to do with your instructor!. i learned that nursing students get different experiences and sometimes it sucks when you can't rotate to the ER,OR,ICU. While some clinical groups do. I feel that nursing school should at least try to provide equal experiences for all the students.(although I know this is impossible! )LOL! I LEARNED THAT I AM STILL LEARNING AND I HAVE A LOOONG WAY TO GO BEFORE I GET TO BE A "REAL NURSE"=):) SO HELP ME GOD!
  5. same here! i should be taking advantage of this thanksgiving week off to study BUT i just can't.lol.maybe over the weekend?? gooodluck!
  6. i think that a regular BSN typically takes more than 4 yrs to complete(prereqs plus the actual nursing school) on the other hand, accelerated BSN means that you could finish in just a few months or up to a year.(how cool is that?) lol double check though:p
  7. hi allnurses! This is my 2nd post of the night.been having random thoughts lately! share your stories on how you landed your job as a nurse, cna, pca, anything hospital related:D Did you know people inside the hospital who helped you get in?was it luck?was it because you had a fabuous resume?did a lot of volunteer? im interested on what you have to say :)
  8. DO IIIITTTTTT:lol2: no harm in trying!remember, nursing isn't just about GPA. goodluck!
  9. thanks for the feedback! keep 'em coming!=) @xtxrn: yes i am a 1st yr nursing student! lol. that is very cool they let you feed the baby=) i forgot to mention i used to volunteer on the acute floor, same hospital and i had fun! worked with patients at the recreational room, helped with arts and crafts!
  10. Hello everyone! I looked at my calendar and this semester has gone by FAST! I only have a few more days of clinical ( i think 4 more) and I dont feel confident at all regarding what a a NURSE should really do. When I'm on the floor, most of the time I make beds, visit patients, talk with them, ask them if they need anything(water, crackers, anything!),vital signs, pass meds lol.I am happy that I have this opportunity to spend time with pts because I know once I start in the "real world" ,I won't be able to do it! But at the same time,i dont feel like I have applied any of the skills we practiced on our 1st semester (IV insertion, etc). So far I have done a wound care dressing, sub q injections ,witnessed glucose test, changing an IV dressing. I WANT TO THEM MYSELF THOUGH! the problem is,theres 10 of us in clinical with only 1 instructor!,can't administer meds without her.Basically if we need to do something to our pts,she has to be there! ANyways, I signed up to volunteer at CPMC,Davies campus . I am excited! orientation on nov 16th! I said on my application that I am interested in volunteering at nursing units, peds, womens center.First choice: peds/L&D then nursing units! reasons why I signed up: 1. I want to practice my nursing skills (if possible). I don't know if they would let me do it though, as a volunteer! 2. If they accept me as a volunteer on the peds floor, that would be a dream come true! I loveee lovee working with kids.:redbeathe. :redpinkhe:pI used to work at a preschool and i know the children that I worked with were healthy. I also know that if I become a peds nurse, the children I'D be taking care of are sick.Nonetheless, I would still like to experience working with them! I am also interested in L&D! =) 3. of course,I want to experience, see cool stuff and build up my resume.meet and interact with new people!:nurse::heartbeat MY QUESTIONS : ANYBODY KNOW if as volunteers, they would let you do "nursing procedures"?? Also, I know I would be placed on just one floor to volunteer! They would base my placement on the answers I give them on my interview! Did i make the right choice by saying i was interested in peds/l&d and nursing units? Should I request that they place me on a a med surg floor???I feel that I would learn more of the nursing stuff on this floor. as you could tell,I have a lot of questions in mind! I would love to make this volunteer a meaningful one:D:) for people who are volunteering or have experienced volunteering at CPMC, share your stories, suggestions!:redpinkhe:p
  11. Hi all nurses! I think i am about to go crazy!I have a test for medsurg this coming friday I am having trouble remembering what goes on with a pt who has: hyperkalemia/hypokalemia,hyponatremia/hypernatremia! i just feel like there is a lot to remember ,was wondering if anybody has tips?suggestions on how to study for this??out of all the topics,i am ok with immune system, oncology, periop nursing, neuro. But F& E? oh gosh:o
  12. hi ahunt224 yes it gets crazy on the floor when all the nurses are passing out meds! i can't blame some of them for not wanting to be followed.lol i am about to volunteer in a few months and hoping i could practice skills when i do so..=)
  13. thanks everyone! i just want to make it clear that I am not one of those people who take breaks every 15 mins. today,i didn't get to take my morning break because i was the last one to administer meds! but my pt refused,=( i was so ready to do it!administering meds via FT!me and my instructor asked him twice and he didn't want to( he has apahasia so can't really converse with us). in our clinical we have 10 students and only one instructor, whenever we have to pass meds,it has to be with our instructor and i could tell you right now, medsurg telemetry is really busy.nurses were in line for their 10am meds at 9am..i observed that and pts have minimum of 6-15 meds, which is crazy! i guess it depends on the day and what kind of patients the unit admits. anyways,i think the reason behind this rant is because not all of us are exposed to ER,OR, other interesting places! some clinical, they get rotated to ER,OR(THE REAL MEDSURG).we suggested to our instructor that she email the coordinator and i guess its not going to happen! lol we have 5 more meetings for the medsurg clinical and this semester is coming to an end! im excited about that:yeah: at the ends of the day I'm still thankful i get to see cool procedures and see hot it is really like to be a nurse.:rckn:
  14. Hi everyone! I am a semester 2 nursing student at a 4 yr university. For the rest of this sem,Im assigned to a med surg ,telemetry floor. For the past 2 weeks,i felt like I haven't been productive while in clinical because: we were at a SNF (skilled nursing facility) for 4 weeks and now we are at Medsurg. We were oriented to the floor and it kinda sucked that we have to go through adjusting again, different nurses,CNA's etc! I liked working at the SNF but we had to move to tele, which is a very interesting place to be because out patients have heart conditions and there is more "action" on this unit:) The nurses and CNA's are really nice, which I like! However, our instructor is new to the hospital ,new to the university and to be honest we get no directions on how to do careplan(coz she doesnt really care about CP).Im kind of worried that I am not getting any feedback on how im doing with my careplan and careplans are graded! I dont know if im doing it right! Don't get me wrong, she is a really intelligent woman and I learned a lot from her! Most of the time,I find myself bored, nothing to do after I pass meds. I am thinking of having 2 patients for next week..:) So my question is: STUDENT NURSES: WHAT DO YOU DO ACTUALLY WHEN YOU ARE ON THE FLOOR? WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE BORED? and for RN's, any suggestions to a Student nurse like me on the tele floor? i want this semester to be meaningful and now that ive thought about it,I dont want to be wasting any of my precious time because this is our only chance to be at the med surg floor.I want to learn as much as I could while in nursing school. Lectures are lectures and i am one of those people that I have to apply my skills in real life (example, injecting a Sub) in order for me to really get it! I feel like there is not enough opportunities for me to practice real skills for nursing! I am on the list for volunteer and i am very excited about it!
  15. first test ever was a drug calc.got a 100=) very happy about that because to be honest i sucked at math.BUT i studied real hard and did every problem dimensional analysis(cancelling out units) and then there was Medsurg. That exam was difficult! i was caught in between 2 answers and they both sounded right,of course there is only one answer it was a multiple choice exam! i got an 82 %..2 more exams to go=)
  16. it is 8 hrs. solve it like this: hr=1hr/125 mL X1000mL=8hrs (1700 plus 8 hrs=1500 or 3pm (because you are looking for hr,put that first thing in your equation. Hr should be on top, over 125mL then multiply by 1000mL and mL cancel out each other.now you are left with hours. if the question asked for gtts/min,then you use whatever drop factor they give you.But in this case it is only asking for how many hrs the bag will infuse.
  17. Hi everyone! Another busy, interesting day at the hospital! First clinical for first sem,did not get to do any RN duties whatsover! My instructor was really really LAZY! Anyways, this sem for med surg clinical,I have an awesome instructor! She arranged everything for the day so each student was assigned to a nurse! I got to pass meds and changed wound care dressings under the supervision of my instructor!two first times for me :redbeathe From doing my careplan( which took forever),looking at the MAR,using the pyxis machine(which amazed me by the way )LOL! i had to tell my pt what each of the medication was for.OMG im so relieved I actually read my drug guide book because my instructor asked me what amlodipine was for, what was the classification and what it does.lol :idea:then after that,i made beds and got to see my pt with his fasciotomy, skin graft.! i changed my pt's wound dressing and applied topical antibiotics on his feet and left thigh!lso got to see a colostomy bag change.met RN's and a very nice CNA!LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT WEEK'S CLINICAL=)ohh yeaaaaah!
  18. sept 23.med surg theory.oh gosh.must study NOW! for real tests make me nervous BUT it could be done lol. goodluck and study hard everyone!=D
  19. thank you everyone! dimensional analysis is a method for dosage calculation where you cancel out similar and units and you arrive at the answer, example: 100 ml of d5w to infuse over 8hrs. Set calibration is 20gtts/mL/what is the drop rate? you know you are looking for (drops per milliliter) so you write everything in fraction form, its easier that way! gtts/mL= 20 gtts/1mL x 100mL/8hrs x 1hr/60 mins.see how mL and hrs cancel out each other?you are left with gtts /min! answer is 4gtts/min!
  20. hi everyone! i would say this is one of the happiest days of my life as a nursing student! its the 2nd week of school ,2nd sem of nursing school and with all the confusion of who is going to be our instructor for clinical(got changed 3x),to what hospital were going to have our clinical at,what unit.etc! omg what a a week! at first we thought we would be taking our drug calc on tuesday (last week) then instructor said.oh i got an email and clinical coordinator said its going to be on friday.got moved to tuesday(earlier today)finally! i studied like ive never studied before because failing is not an option! i failed last sem and now i am a semester behind because of that drug calc! but! i am sooooo happy i passed my drug calc test and got 20/20! :nurse: dimensional analysis saved me! it applied to every problem and using this method, you get to see which units cancel out and what you are looking for!!!!!!!!i took a class in college of san mateo, studied the practice exam in our syllabus, went over the book(calculate with confidence, and another book) and did a lot of practice problems.whew! i feel very relieved, blessed, happy because now i can at least focus on med surg..so happppppy! as a little treat,i ate with my bf and bought myself a grey crackle nail polish (i know,i know its not really allowed in nursing school but,ill take it off before next tuesday because tuesday is clinical day)..lol!
  21. a few other questions! 1. Order: Heparin 7000 units SQ Q6H Available: 10,000 units /mL how many mL/dose? is this right? i solved it like this: mL/dose= 1mL/10,000 units x 7000 units/1dose= 0.7 mL/dose ( i was thinking of i should even consider writing 6hrs under 7000 units ,but i didn't because 1 dose means pt gets 7500 units.right? 2. Order: D5W 1150mL IV q6h. Tubing calibrated at 10 gtts/mL. Calculate gtts/min. i did it like this: gtts/min: 10 gtts/mL x 1150 mL/6hrs x 1hr/60mins= 31. 9 or 32 gtts/min (so for this one you would really have to write the 6hs under 1150mL? i dont know if i am just overthinking or what!
  22. hi! thanks for your response! so im assuming that if I see a 25 % or whatever the hospital policy is, I should consider that and solve for the original rate then multiply by (whatever % is given). is that right?
