i struggle with the fibromyalgia diagnosis. my mother has been diagnosed with it and she (as well as the majority of the patients i am aquainted with) use it as a crutch. besides the antidepressants, they are usually on massive amounts of narcotics. it seems that society relishes being labeled. "please make me exceptional... different from everyone else..." personally, i am 29, and because of an active youth, i ache in nearly every joint, but ill be damned if im gonna use that as an excuse. whats wrong with being average? everyone hurts... its part of life. unfortunately, modern society as a whole has been raised to believe that pain is unacceptable. im not an asshole, but if i have a real big complainer, without a real big problem, i tell them... we take care of the sickest pt's first. i will try to make you as comfortable as possible until the doctor can see you. no one has died from pain that i know of." now, im not talking about chest pain, ect. i mean fx's, cellulitis, blah blah blah. short story then im done. it is relevant. as i was having marital difficulties, i noticed i wanted to sleep a lot. not just tired, but exhausted. saw a doctor (first and only time so far) and she told me "it sounds like dysthymia". i said theres no test for that though, how do you know. it was based on exam. i left and wont go back for that. its a bullshit diagnosis if it cant be tested for (to me).

the kenai is southcentral, right on the water. i use to live in southeast, and thats where sitka is- a beautiful place. delta (i go at least one a year) is a wonderful place. not the typical beautiful, but if you like your privacy, its the place to be. a great place to hunt. i heard that fort greely is putting in a brand new hospital that should be ready in the next few years. maybe you should check into that. hot summer this year- its been 80-90 all summer in delta. but itll be a cold winter too. it gets 60 below in the interior. thanks for agreeing with me about the pain scale, since i am always right. just ask both of my ex wives:chuckle . ya'll have a great day...

our hospital is spending a lot of money to adopt the "planetree" model of care, which pretty much attempts to make the patient feel they are at a spa. tries to make a homey atmosphere, massage therapist, hottubs, pets, special meals. i just dont get it. i know pt's will like it, but is it going to change the actual care? is it going to change what i do? i really dont think so. im pretty sure the way i take care of my pt's is the best way i know, and as i learn new skills, i may change my outlooks in minor ways, but the basics will never change. abc's keep ppl alive. thats what i do. stall the inevitable.

im sorry if i implied that minor pain is not still pain. what i wanted to impart was that our society is growing up learning that pain is not normal. it is not acceptable. which only ends up in depression, cause when you hurt every single morning, what are you to think? "doctor, doctor, i need some pain medicine", instead of, " ill make the best of this day..." also, the pain scale is a loop hole for drug seekers. if i need some money, ill just go to the doctor complaining of pain, get my oxycontin (which goes for $1.25/mg here on the street), and go make a few thousand dollars. we need a lab that detects an enzyme that is excreted when you LIE! thats a rich man that find that one.

So The Other Day... An 80some Yr Old Man Came In Due To Fall And Dislocating His Hip. I Asked What His Pain Level Was- He Said A 3/10. I Smiled. As I Slid The Iv In, I Told Him I Was Sorry For Hurting Him, He Said Something I Wrote Down Because It Hit Me So Hard. "life Is Full Of Pain. Im 80 Yrs Old And I Have Accepted That. This Is Nothing Compared To A Heartache. You Youngins Will See It Someday, Just Gotta Learn To Accept It." I **** You Not, Tears Came To My Eyes Right There... And Im A Man! A Few Pt's Later A Kid(17) Came In With A Lac, And Said His Pain Was 10. I Wanted So Badly To Drag Him Into The Old Mans Room. Pain May Be Subjective, But We Are Programmed To Believe Its Not Normal, So Any Pain Must Be Unacceptable. I Can Guarantee, A Heartache Hurts Much Worse Than Anything Ive Ever Done, Including Broken Bones, Lacs, Concussions, And The Very Very Worse... A Real Big Burn. All That Stuff Healed. Hearts Dont Heal Sometimes...

I Can See Benefit And Risk Of Tv's... They Would Distract Pt's From Pain, And Boredom. They Would Help Pt's And Families Relax, And Lay Offa The Light. But I'd Hate It. We Have Hard Enough Time Getting Seekers Out Of The Room As It Is. The Pt's Who Have No Place To Go Would Just Keep Complaining Of Pain So They Wouldnt Have To Leave.

THIS GUY IS DYING.... THATS A REAL BIG WORD, DYING. SO WHILE WE ARE THROWIN AS MANY IV'S IN AS WE CAN, AND STUFFIN A TUBE THE SIZE OF YOUR FRIGGIN THUMB DOWN A THROAT, WOULDNT YOU WANT TO BE THERE? EITHER TO SEE THAT ALL WAS DONE, OR JUST TO SAY GOODBYE. I REMEMBER ONCE A MAN HAD A SZ WHILE DRIVING, STERNUM HIT THE WHEEL, LESS THAN A MILE FROM THE HOSPITAL. (HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO VISIT HIS WIFE WHO WAS AN INPATIENT) SOMEONE WENT TO THE WIFES ROOM, AND SHE SAT AT HIS HEAD TALKING TO HIM THE ENTIRE TIME. I WAS 6 INCHES FROM HER DOING CPR, AND WITH EVERY PUSH, HEARING THE CRUCH OF RIBS. SHE LATER TOLD ME SHE APPRECIATED ME LETTING HER BE WITH HIM WHEN HE DIED. SHE LITERALLY SAT BETWEEN A DOC INTUBATING AND THE NURSE DOING CPR. ITS A GOOD THING...

I Liked The, All Meds Should Come In Po Or Supp, Give The Pt The Choice. How Can A Person Be In An Er For An "emergency Visit", With The Common Complaint Of Pain, Then Dictate How He Or She Gets Her Meds? I'm Too Busy To Cater To Miniscule Needs Of Needy Pt's. I'd Love To Make You Comfortable. I'll Get You As Many Warm Blankets As You Want, Er's Can Be Freezing When Your Not Running. But Start Freakin Out Because You Cant Swallow A Pill, Or Because You See A Needle, And You Dont Need The Med Anyway. We Have All Seen It... When You Are Really Hurting, You Dont Give A Rats *** How You Get That Med As Long As It Takes The Pain Away! Perfect Example, Kidney Stones. Had A Young Woman Come In The Other Night, Complaining Of "abd Cramping Worse Than Labor". That Tells You That The One Thing God Gave You Girls To Punish You- Labor Pains, Has Nothing On A Kidney Stone. Ive Heard That More Than A Few Times. Nut Up And Take Your Medicine...

I Completely Agree With The Last Two Kiddies. Go To Med/surg, Get Your Basics Down Where No One Is Gonna Die When You Start Making Your Mistakes... Cause Everyone Does. Up Until Last Year, I Use To Think That Some Exceptional New Grads Could Do Er, But I've Seen The Light. You Will Not Enjoy It Nearly As Much If You Dont Know The Basic Fundamentals. I Appreciate My 5 Yrs Of Pshych, Med/surg,peds,and Home Health. I Am Positive That I Am A Great Nurse Because Of That Experience...

sweety, you are doing it all right. i really dont know everything even though i sound like i do. but, when your mama is bein mean, remember this... SHE'S OLD! old men and women can get mean sometimes. its your (and your siblings) responsibility to take care of her *****iness and all. i commend you. this is exactly what we were saying.ppl wont do it now adays, because its cramps their style. its hard work thats only reward can come from inside yourself sometimes.when you get angry remember... SHE'S OLD, SHE'S OLD, SHE'S OLD. IM PROUD OF YA.

wth? the best shoes are the ones made to withstand running, walking, and plain ole beating up. ive never worn anything but crosstraining shoes and never had a problem. they cost less than all those fancy things you others are talking about, and most of the time, go to the sale rack, and you can find a decent looking pair for nothing. hey, i got to tell ya. ive done peds,psych,med/surg, and nursing homes. nothing compares to a well run ER. takes a lot of continuing education, practice, and confidence, and team work. i have worked in a small ER, where i have learned so many skills that i would never had seen anywhere else. have a great time, and when the man gets you down, just say, "this too shall pass." ****** days dont last forever.

you are right earl, there are some good ones. thats not the point. nursing homes and residential care facilities are used as conveniences, and therefore are over populated. instead of biting the bullet and taking in the people that raised us, we pay someone else to do it. and most of the time, we sell, or take all of their life possessions, so that they are "poor", and medicaid/medicare will pay for it all... meaning you and i are paying for some lazy kid not wanting to repay their families, by doing what God meant us to do. there are exceptions to the rule, but those exceptions would get better care if we took the elderly that belonged at home out of the nursing homes, reducing the population of that institution, and bringing the patient to staff ratio closer to one on one. the very best home ive worked at was in homer, alaska. small population (like 30-40), and a beautiful home. fireplace, tv, blah , blah, blah. one of the local russians works with activities, and cooks traditional food. for the few residents that know what the hell is going on, outdoor activities are planned. with all of this great stuff, and only one hour away, i still would not put my parents in it. my parents were not perfect, but they did what they thought was best raising us. they deserve to have the favor returned. anyways, Rn's and LPN's arent encouraged to better there nursing skills. mds reports, passing meds, and doing treatments over and over all day long isnt doing any nurse any good. the aides do all or most of the work, and its harder than hell to find a good cna. turnover rates are sky high everywhere. whew... done with that tantrum. if you are a cna, and you want a job at a nursing home, expect to get bit, kicked, hit, cussed at, (again), blah, blah, blah. most of the residents are confused and have lost their inhibitions. and the ones that arent confused are pissed off they got stuck in there, with few exceptions.

i have worked nursing homes from LA to podunk alaska, and i've come to realize that no...i said NO, nursing home will ever treat a patient as well as someone deserves. over the years, families have failed their loved ones and given the responsibility to an institution that is only looking to succeed, therefore make money. sure the staff does their best to take good respectful care of clients, but it isnt one on one care. i can promise you that when my parents start to need more help, i will be the one to care for them. no one can love family the way family can. no ifs ands or buts. i think the problem is that modern families believe they must live at a higher standard, which doesnt include staying home and wiping someones ***. for the ppl that are without loved ones, they must accept a lesser quality of life, and rely on a support system that has never known them, eventually to die in a cold, crowded environment.
