  1. Wow,Dervid. I feel so antiquated already. During my time which is a loooong, looooong time ago, a passing grade which is a 3 "tres"in any class ("subject") your first year will automatically kick you out of the program. But then again as I said, that was quite a while back. Like I said previously, I still believe that in order for someone to pass the licensing exams here in the US, they should know their nursing and that means decent grades. I also agree that as long as one passes the board exams ( again, here in the US,) one will be able to get a job as long as you are not choosy.
  2. When you said, "do they look at the types of grades you have", you mean the employers? I remember we had to have an authenticated transcript in addition to our diplomas with our applications. I assume that for someone to pass the licensing exams, she/he probably have decent grades.
  3. Thanks for the encouragement. I still have to do my clinicals after my final test, but I am really excited. A little apprehensive but really excited. I will be doing 96 hours of clinicals. I am not sure that will be enough to get back some of my lost skills but I plan on making the most of it. I hope I get a good preceptor. Maybe I'll get lucky and have a nice preceptor who respects his/her elders,:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  4. Thanks, Krissy. It is so nice to know that there are a lot of us out there. So you're from NY. That's where I got my original licensure a long time ago:chuckle.I am also doing school nursing part time. Again, thanks.
  5. Any advice for a re entry nurse? I have been out of the bedside for 18 years and I am presently taking a refresher course. I plan on getting a part time position but there are so many options out there. Any advice for a 40 something nurse? My previous experience was surgical intensive care and post open heart recovery, but I do not intend to do that anymore. Too stressful.
  6. Send me the sample letter, please. Thanks.
  7. Malin, you're not serious about being barefoot at work, are you?
  8. stbernard, i missed to point out that those 7 out of 7 kids were in 3rd grade. some kids still know what a "second hand" is. we still have hope.:)
  9. I got intrigued about the topic for this thread and so I started asking kids at my son's school if they knew what a "second hand" on a watch was. 7 out of 7 knew. I honestly think Wanna Be was just kidding.
  10. When I first came to this country, I used to work with other Filipino nurses and I remember that we also used to talk in our "native" tongue. Rest assured, they are no bad mouthing you. It is just so much easier at that time to talk in our first language. True, our curriculum was in English, but we still used our national language in conversation. We tried to refrain from talking in Tagalog, 'cause one of our clinical instructors at the time (she was doing our orientation) would say, " English only, English only", but it is almost automatic to revert back to Tagalog. Now, it is the other way around for me. After 25 years, it is so much easier to speak in English now, since there's no one to talk Tagalog to. I feel bad that I was not more persistent in teaching my children my first language.
  11. I think it is true that if we tap into the non working nurses that are out there, it would ease up the shortage a bit. In my circle of friends alone, there are 8 of us (all with BSN degrees) who are out of the workforce. Two of us substitute for the school nurses whenever they need us. If the schedules were more flexible then maybe some of us will consider going back.
